Rui Kanoya (鹿屋 瑠偉, Kanoya Rui), is the hero and protagonist of the mecha anime Monomagia: The Infinite Over Machine / Infinite Divine Machine Mono Magia (無限神機モノマギア, Mugen Shinki Mono Magia). In his original story, he is the ace pilot of the massive mecha Gigas Machina, a powerful war machine designed to combat the Ione, an unknown and destructive force that invades Energia Ichihara, a futuristic virtual city set in the year 2124.
After being summoned into the real world during the Re:Creators conflict, Rui finds himself forced to adapt to a world where his heroic actions are seen as fictional entertainment. Though initially struggling with his place in this new reality, he soon becomes a valuable ally in the fight against Altair, using both his combat skills and his powerful mecha to protect those who stand against destruction.
Background

Appearance in anime
In Monomagia: The Infinite Over Machine, Rui Kanoya was a gifted young pilot, chosen to operate the Gigas Machina, the only weapon capable of resisting the Ione invasion. As one of humanity’s last defenders, he fought tirelessly to protect the virtual city of Energia Ichihara, piloting his massive machine through high-intensity battles against overwhelming odds.
Despite his status as a protagonist, Rui was not a traditional stoic hero he was lazy, reluctant, and occasionally selfish, often complaining about his role as humanity’s savior. However, when the time came to face danger, his natural talent and combat instincts made him an undeniable force on the battlefield.
After being summoned into the real world, Rui quickly realizes that his heroic story was nothing more than an anime created for entertainment. Struggling with his place in this new reality, he initially feels out of sync with the other “Created” characters, particularly because his Gigas Machina is significantly stronger than most of their weapons. However, as events unfold, Rui begins to take his role in the real-world conflict more seriously, standing alongside Selesia, Meteora, and the others to fight against Altair’s threat.
Appearance
Rui is a slim, athletic teenager with messy blond hair and blue eyes. His casual, slightly unkempt appearance reflects his laid-back and reluctant attitude, contrasting with his status as a mecha pilot and hero. He wears a modern pilot suit that is designed for high-speed combat maneuvers, though he often appears in casual clothing when outside his mecha.
His youthful and somewhat carefree expression makes him appear less serious than the other warriors in the battle against Altair, further emphasizing his outsider status in the world of sword-wielding heroes and magic users.
Personality
Rui Kanoya is lazy, carefree, and reluctant to take responsibility, making him one of the most unconventional mecha pilots in anime. Unlike traditional mecha protagonists who are driven by duty or revenge, Rui prefers to take it easy, often complaining about the burdens of heroism and his role as a savior.
However, beneath his apathetic and sometimes childish demeanor, Rui possesses natural talent and combat instincts, making him a lethal force when piloting the Gigas Machina. While he may whine and procrastinate, he ultimately rises to the occasion when needed, proving that he is more capable than he lets on.
His casual and humorous personality often puts him at odds with more serious characters, particularly those who take their roles as warriors or knights too seriously. He frequently teases and mocks his allies, though it is usually good-natured banter rather than actual malice. However, when pushed too far, Rui can become incredibly focused, showcasing the determination and tactical mind that made him a top-tier pilot.
Over time, Rui matures as a character, slowly accepting his responsibility and proving that heroism isn’t just about grand gestures it’s about stepping up when it matters most.

Battling Altair’s Forces
Despite his reluctance, Rui eventually joins the battle against Altair, using Gigas Machina’s immense power to turn the tide of combat.
