Rudo Surebrec

Rudo Surebrec (ルド・シュアブレック, Rudo Shuaburekku) is the main protagonist of the anime and manga series Gachiakuta. He becomes a member of the Cleaners under Team Akuta after being recruited by Enjin.

Rudo was originally a resident of the Sphere, living as a Sphereite among the Tribe folk. His life changed drastically after he was falsely accused of murdering his foster father, Regto, who was in fact killed by an Angel. Cast into the Pit as punishment, Rudo later begins working with the Cleaners, with the goal of gathering all pieces of the Watchman Series, which he believes will grant him the chance to return to the Sphere.

I reject everything you’ve said. And I embrace everything you reject. Because of that… I’ll kick your ass.

Rudo Surebrec’s Appearance with his Full Face Mask

Rudo is portrayed as a thin, scrawny teenager with short, spiky, and unkempt strawberry-blond hair that fades into dark brown roots (depicted as light gray with black roots in the manga). He has large red eyes accented by noticeable eye bags and short, cropped eyebrows. Like many who grew up in the slums, his clothing is ragged and worn. His typical attire consists of a beige loose-fitting vest with a square neckline and vertical stripe patterns, layered beneath a large hoodie decorated with brown shide-like patterns running down the middle. He also wears baggy beige trousers, secured around the lower shins and ankles with bands of thick fabric, paired with red socks.

Rudo’s childhood abuse left his hands severely scarred, with ring-like patterns running from his fingertips to his elbows. To ease the constant pain and conceal the scars from others, he wears large gloves with a central ring, a gift from his foster father Regto, over bandages. He rarely removes them, except when Regto tended to his injuries.

After joining the Cleaners, Rudo adopts a modified version of the organization’s uniform, similar to other Givers. His outfit features a white sleeveless zip-up jacket with an oversized hood and large buttons along the mantle, marked with the Cleaners’ insignia on both the chest and back. Underneath, he wears a plain red long-sleeved shirt. His uniform also includes wide trousers with large cuffs, held by a striped belt, and two knapsacks attached at the waist, one for storing his Full Face Mask and another for carrying trash to use as ammunition. His footwear consists of white sneakers with dark gray laces over red socks, while his accessories include a communication choker, his signature 3R gloves, and a yellow armband with the Cleaners’ emblem.

Rudo’s Full Face Mask resembles a luchador-style design in red, with lightning-shaped patterns for eyebrows. Its eyeholes are jaggedly rimmed, and the lower half resembles a gas mask with spikes around the filter.

In later chapters (Volume 11), his uniform undergoes further changes: the hood becomes larger and loses its buttons, sleeves are added to the jacket, the zipper is reshaped, and his footwear is updated to laced boots.

Personality

Rudo’s personality is shaped by years of abuse, neglect, and isolation. Abandoned by his parents and stigmatized as the son of murderers, he grew up emotionally withdrawn, carrying a deep well of anger and pain. Only a few people, such as Regto and Chiwa, treated him with kindness and did not view him as irredeemable. One of Rudo’s most distinctive traits is his fascination with discarded objects; he often salvages broken or worthless items, repairing them to restore their function, reflecting both his resourcefulness and his longing to find value in things society deems useless.

After being falsely accused of Regto’s murder and cast into exile, Rudo’s resentment hardened into a thirst for revenge. He swore to return to the Sphere, annihilate the Celestials, and make them regret labeling him “filthy” and discarding him. This trauma also gave him profound trust issues; initially, he cooperates with others in the Ground only to achieve his goal of returning to the Sphere. Over time, however, he begins forming bonds with the Cleaners, which gradually softens his outlook.

According to Semiu, Rudo carries something akin to a “curse” inside him, fueled by hatred and growing stronger with each hardship. This manifests in moments of uncontrolled rage, such as when he retaliates against Amo after being freed from her ability. Despite this violent edge, Rudo is intensely devoted to his friends and is tormented by guilt whenever they are harmed. For instance, he fell into despair when Griss was believed dead, and he was enraged when Amo was kidnapped, determined to rescue her. Even after the Trash Storm incident, he showed empathy by visiting Zanka to apologize for what had happened to him.

Though Rudo’s early focus was on returning to the Sphere, his perspective shifts after learning about his ancestor Canis Surebrec, who originated from the Ground rather than the Sphere. This revelation inspires him to seek the truth about his lineage and the world’s hidden history. Following a private conversation with Arkha Corvus, the leader of the Cleaners, Rudo adopts the identity of “Rudo the Cleaner,” fully embracing his role and no longer viewing himself as an outsider. His first independent mission as a Cleaner marks the beginning of this transformation.

Socially, Rudo struggles with communication due to his isolated upbringing. He often misses social cues, misinterprets others’ feelings, or responds in ways that lead to misunderstandings, such as when he rejected a uniform designed by Follo, not out of dislike, but because he didn’t want Follo inconvenienced on his behalf. He finds it difficult to articulate his thoughts and often resorts to brief replies, silence, or gestures. Nevertheless, he is direct and honest, as shown when he told Kuro he would not retaliate if Kuro apologized to Riyo.

History

Rudo was born and raised in the slums of Heaven, where poverty and prejudice shaped much of his early life. From childhood, his arms were covered in painful scars, which he claimed were inflicted by his parents, though the exact cause remains uncertain. Both of his parents were eventually exiled after being accused of murder, leaving Rudo abandoned at a young age.

He was taken in by Regto, a fellow tribesperson, who provided him with care and guidance. Regto also gave Rudo a pair of distinctive gloves, instructing him to treat them with respect, for if he did, a soul would dwell within them. This gift, along with Regto’s kindness, instilled in Rudo a deep appreciation for discarded objects. He began to see value in things others considered worthless, developing a habit of repairing broken items. This fixation earned him the nickname “Trash Vandal” as he often broke into trash disposal facilities to collect salvageable items.

Despite his attachment to Regto, Rudo’s scars and reputation as the “Trash Vandal” made him an outcast even within the slums, where many tribesfolk sought to live crime-free lives to avoid reinforcing their community’s negative image. The only person besides Regto to show him acceptance was Chiwa, his childhood friend, for whom he eventually developed romantic feelings.

Relationships

Regto
After Rudo was abandoned following his parents’ exile, he was taken in by Regto, who became a foster father figure to him. Regto cared for Rudo and provided him with guidance, even gifting him the gloves that would become his most cherished possession. Although Rudo developed genuine familial affection for him, he also felt a strong sense of obligation to repay Regto’s kindness. To support their household, Rudo scavenged salvageable trash to sell, despite Regto’s disapproval of these methods. When Regto was murdered by an unknown assailant, Rudo was falsely accused of the crime, leading the public to condemn him as the killer.

Chiwa
Rudo once harbored romantic feelings for his childhood friend Chiwa, who appeared to reciprocate his affection. However, after Regto’s death and Rudo’s wrongful conviction, Chiwa lost faith in him, believing the accusations of murder. This betrayal deeply scarred Rudo, severing their bond and fueling his vow of vengeance. He now counts her among those he swears to “send to hell.”

Enjin
Rudo first met Enjin after being cast into the Ground, where Enjin was intrigued by his ability to evade slave traders. Impressed, Enjin recruited Rudo into the Cleaners and became both a mentor and older brother figure. He frequently provides guidance and reassurance, helping Rudo learn how to harness his powers as a Giver. Their relationship deepens when Rudo confides his fears of being unable to change, and Enjin supports him with encouragement and advice, reinforcing their close bond.

Zanka Nijiku
Rudo’s relationship with Zanka began with hostility, as Zanka disliked Rudo and misinterpreted his smiles as mockery. Their animosity peaked during a heated encounter where Rudo pursued Zanka with a plunger, further straining their interactions. However, their dynamic shifted after fighting together against Jabber, during which Rudo demonstrated genuine concern for Zanka’s safety. Over time, Zanka became a mentor figure, guiding Rudo in controlling his vital instrument, while Rudo showed curiosity about Zanka’s past, leading to mutual respect.

Riyo Reaper
With Riyo, Rudo shares a more casual but trusting friendship. Initially startled by her kindness, he gradually came to appreciate her warmth and grew protective of her. This is most evident when he confronted Kuro for injuring her, angrily demanding that Kuro apologize. Rudo’s loyalty to Riyo highlights his growing attachment to the Cleaners as his new family.

Amo Empool
Rudo’s relationship with Amo began on antagonistic terms during the Lady of Penta Arc, when she used her Jinki to manipulate him into battle against Tamsy and Zanka. After her control over him was broken, Rudo lashed out in rage but was restrained by Enjin and the other Cleaners. Over time, their hostility gave way to reconciliation, strengthened by Rudo’s role in rescuing Amo from her kidnapper. His relief upon her recovery was clear, symbolized by the tulip he gifted her as a token of care.

As the story progresses, Amo’s attachment to Rudo becomes increasingly evident, though whether her feelings are romantic remains ambiguous. Rudo, for his part, shows profound concern for her safety, often reacting with fierce anger whenever she is threatened. His protective instincts toward Amo emphasize the depth of their growing bond.

Abilities

Overall Skill Level
Although not formally trained as a fighter, Rudo demonstrates exceptional creativity and adaptability in combat. His mastery of 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) allows him to transform discarded objects into effective Vital Instruments. He has shown the ability to exploit weaknesses in opponents and Trash Beasts by improvising with unconventional weapons for instance, using a keyboard to strike vital points from a distance or concentrating the power of 3R through a nail gun to break through Bundus’s defenses. He has also created traps, such as a spike pit formed from an old paintbrush by extracting its last drops of ink.

Enhanced Strength
Despite his lack of formal combat training, Rudo possesses extraordinary physical strength. He has fought large Trash Beasts head-on, shattering them with a single strike even without a Vital Instrument. His raw power also enabled him to overpower seasoned opponents like Jabber Wonger, whose durability was honed against Vital Instrument attacks.

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes
Rudo’s speed and reflexes are equally formidable. He has outmaneuvered Apostles and displayed the ability to dodge bullets mid-air. Under the influence of Amo’s Vital Instrument, his speed was amplified to the point that he was able to close great distances and strike at fighters like Zanka and Tamsy without them noticing.

Immense Willpower
Rudo’s determination is one of his defining traits. From childhood, he endured the constant pain of his scarred hands and the stigma of being the son of exiled murderers, yet he never gave in. Even when cast into the Ground, he refused to break, developing a fearlessness in combat. He can withstand extreme pain without faltering, fighting through serious injuries such as broken limbs without hesitation.

Improvised Weapon Proficiency
Rudo’s ability to combine his Vital Instrument power with creativity makes him highly versatile in combat. He is capable of turning everyday objects into deadly tools, wielding them with precision and unpredictability. His unorthodox fighting style allows him to surprise more experienced opponents and adapt quickly to changing circumstances.

Unarmed Combat Proficiency
In addition to his improvised weapon use, Rudo has proven himself in direct hand-to-hand combat. Despite his limited training, he has traded blows with seasoned fighters such as Jabber Wonger, who acknowledged Rudo as a worthy opponent.
