Roronoa Zoroalso known as “Pirate Hunter Zoro,” is a key combatant of the Straw Hat Pirates, serving as one of the crew’s two swordsmen and one of the Senior Officers of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Publicly recognized as the right-hand man to Monkey D. Luffy, Zoro is considered the second-in-command of the crew. He was formerly a bounty hunter before joining Luffy’s crew as its second member during the Romance Dawn Arc, making him the first to officially become part of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Born in the East Blue, Zoro is the son of Tera and Roronoa Arashi, and the grandson of Shimotsuki Furiko and Roronoa Pinzoro. He is also the grandnephew of Shimotsuki Ushimaru, linking him to the prestigious Shimotsuki Family of Wano Country. Zoro’s lineage traces back to the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma, further deepening his connection to the ancient and powerful traditions of Wano.
As a master of Three Sword Style (Santoryu), a unique form of swordsmanship he developed during his childhood training in Shimotsuki Village, Zoro is one of the strongest fighters among the Straw Hats. Alongside Luffy and Sanji, he is part of the crew’s “Monster Trio,” the three most powerful combatants on board. Zoro’s personal goal is to become the world’s grea swordsman, a dream he pursues to honor a promise made to his deceased childhood friend and distant cousin, Kuina.
Zoro’s reputation extends far beyond his role within the Straw Hats. His early fame as a bounty hunter and his increasing notoriety as a pirate have earned him significant recognition across the seas. Upon arriving at the Sabaody Archipelago, Zoro, along with Luffy, was included among the “Super Rookies”—a group of eleven pirates who reached the Red Line with bounties exceeding Beli100,000,000 before the Summit War. This group, along with Marshall D. Teach, would later be dubbed the Worst Generation, a collection of young pirates seen as significant disruptors of the world’s order.
Zoro’s journey as a pirate has been marked by significant bounty increases. He first gained a bounty of Beli60,000,000 following the events of the Arabasta Arc. This amount was doubled to Beli120,000,000 after his role in the Enies Lobby Incident. Following his exploits during the Dressrosa Arc, Zoro’s bounty skyrocketed to Beli320,000,000. Most recently, after the Raid on Onigashima, Zoro’s bounty increased to a staggering Beli1,111,000,000, solidifying his status as one of the most dangerous and powerful pirates in the world.
Zoro’s unwavering commitment to his dream, fierce loyalty to his crew, and unmatched swordsmanship continue to make him one of the most feared and respected figures in the pirate world. His journey to become the grea swordsman is as integral to his identity as it is to his connection with his fellow Straw Hats, particularly his captain, Luffy.

Appearance
Roronoa Zoro is a tall, muscular man with lightly tanned skin, known for his intimidating presence and signature three swords, which are always bundled at his right hip, secured by a green haramaki. This arrangement allows him to draw his swords quickly with his left hand, making him a formidable swordsman. Of the three swords, the Wado Ichimonji has remained a constant in his arsenal, while the other two swords have changed over time, often due to battle damage, with Zoro replacing them with progressively superior blades. Though his right hand is often seen resting on the hilts, he can use it to swiftly draw his swords, especially before sitting down or resting.
Zoro’s appearance is also marked by several battle scars that tell the story of his hard-fought journey. The most prominent scar is the large one stretching from his left shoulder to his right hip, a result of his defeat at the hands of the world’s grea swordsman, Dracule Mihawk, during their encounter at Baratie. He also bears self-inflicted scars on his ankles from his desperate attempt to free himself from Mr. 3’s Tokudai Candle Service Set by trying to sever his feet at Little Garden. After the two-year timeskip, Zoro gained another mysterious scar over his left eye, though the origin of this injury remains unknown.
Zoro’s cropped green hair is another standout feature, often the subject of playful teasing from Sanji, who nicknames him “marimo” (moss-head or moss-ball) due to its resemblance to moss.
Before the Timeskip
Before the Timeskip

Zoro before timeskip
Similar to most of his male crewmates, Zoro’s wardrobe remained largely consistent throughout the series prior to the timeskip. His signature outfit consisted of black trousers tucked into black boots, a plain white shirt with three undone buttons at the collar, and his ever-present green haramaki. While Zoro’s shirt changed in various arcs, the rest of his outfit stayed the same.
-
Arlong Park Arc:Zoro disembarked Sanji’s fishing ship without a shirt and, after defeating most of Arlong’s crew, donned a stolen navy-blue shirt with light blue whirlpool patterns from one of the fish-men. At this point, Zoro’s bandages were visible beneath his shirt, a reminder of the injuries he sustained from Mihawk in the previous arc.
-
Loguetown Arc:During this arc, Zoro acquired theSandai KitetsuandYubashirito replace the two katanas broken by Mihawk.
-
Drum Island Arc:Zoro initially dressed for the cold but soon stripped down after a foolish decision to swim in the freezing water, resulting in him spending part of the arc shirtless and barefoot. Eventually, he stole a hooded, forest green parka with a light green sash and white fur on the cuffs, hood, and hem from a member of Wapol’s army, completing the outfit with a pair of boots.
-
Arabasta Arc:Zoro wore an orange keffiyeh with a gold chain on his head, paired with a long-sleeved white coat decorated with black lines. His black trousers were torn above the ankles, giving him a more rugged look suited to the desert environment.
-
Skypiea Arc:He initially wore his standard outfit, but after fighting a sky shark to save Chopper, he switched to a long, deep blue tank top and a pair of goggles strapped to his head or neck. These goggles were later broken and discarded.
-
Water 7 and Enies Lobby Arcs:Zoro wore his usual outfit until near the end of theWater 7 Arc, where he switched to an unzipped, bright yellow jacket. He continued wearing this through theEnies Lobby Arc.
-
Post-Enies Lobby Arc:Zoro sported a black shirt with theGalley-La Companyemblem in white.
-
Thriller Bark Arc:At the arc’s conclusion, Zoro donned an open gray shirt and replacedYubashiri, which had been rusted away by Shu in the Enies Lobby Arc, withShusui, which was entrusted to him by the zombified Ryuma, animated by Brook’s shadow.
-
Sabaody Archipelago Arc:Zoro wore an open white shirt with red stripes, signaling his readiness for the challenges ahead.
-
Kuraigana Island:After being sent to the island by Bartholomew Kuma, Zoro wore an open dark blue shirt. He arrived on the island critically injured, andPeronapatched him up, leaving bandages covering his body.
Zoro’s evolving appearance, marked by his scars, clothing choices, and the iconic swords at his side, reflects his continuous growth as a swordsman, warrior, and key member of the Straw Hat Pirates. His readiness for battle is symbolized by the black bandana he always ties around his head when fighting seriously, a trademark that signals his resolve to overcome any opponent.
After the Timeskip
During the two-year timeskip, Roronoa Zoro underwent significant physical changes that further emphasized his strength and experience. A new, prominent scar now runs vertically across his left eye, which remains permanently closed, suggesting the injury has rendered him unable to open it. His build became notably more muscular, with a bulkier frame, and his hair grew longer and shaggier, though it is often slicked back. Zoro also grew taller, standing at a height similar to Nico Robin.
Zoro’s new standard outfit consists of a long, open dark-green coat that is cinched at his waist with a muted red sash, where his three swords are tucked. The coat, which leaves his chest exposed, also reveals his signature green haramaki underneath. Zoro’s black bandana, which he ties around his head during serious battles, is now worn on his left forearm when not in use.
-
Punk Hazard Arc:To adapt to the cold climate of the COOL side of Punk Hazard, Zoro wore a white fur-lined coat, which he took from Brownbeard’s Centaur Patrol Unit. This outfit served as protection against the freezing temperatures during his time on the island.
-
Dressrosa Arc:In Dressrosa, Zoro adopted a more formal disguise, wearing a black suit paired with a white dress shirt, with the top button left undone. He completed the look with black sunglasses and a fake white mustache to conceal his identity. However, during his clash with Admiral Fujitora, Zoro’s sunglasses were destroyed, and he discarded the mustache once his cover was blown. After the battle against the Donquixote Pirates, he removed his suit jacket and unbuttoned his shirt, leaving his chest and the large scar across his torso fully visible.
-
Zou Arc:During his time on Zou, Zoro wore a dark-blue T-shirt beneath his usual green coat and haramaki. He paired this with long, black trousers and boots, a more relaxed look that still conveyed his readiness for combat.
-
Wano Country Arc:Zoro’s appearance took on a more traditional look in Wano Country, reflecting the cultural aesthetics of the region. He wore a white yukata with black details and a green cloud pattern along the bottom. Over this, he donned a dark green jittoku haori featuring a mon of a black sun. His footwear included zōri sandals with black straps, and he styled his hair in the chonmage (topknot) style, further embracing Wano’s samurai heritage. After returning Shusui to Ryuma’s grave, Zoro was entrusted with the legendary sword Enma, a blade once wielded by Kouzuki Oden. Enma was given to him by Kouzuki Hiyori, Oden’s daughter, marking a significant moment in Zoro’s growth as a swordsman.
-
Egghead Arc:In the Egghead Arc, Zoro switched to a more futuristic look after reaching the control tower. He wore a black body jumpsuit adorned with the SSG logo on the left thigh. Over this, he layered a dark-blue coat, blue gloves, and an upper-body belt to hold his three swords across his back. His outfit was completed with a pair of orange DOM Shoes, aligning with the technological advancements of Egghead Island.
Zoro’s evolving attire reflects his adaptability to different environments and missions while maintaining his stoic and battle-ready appearance. Each new outfit marks his growth and deepening role as one of the Straw Hat Pirates’ most powerful combatants, and his continued quest to become the grea swordsman in the world.
