Rokusuke Kōenji (高円寺 六助, Kōenji Rokusuke) is a student of Class 1-D at Advanced Nurturing High School in the Classroom of the Elite series. He hails from a prestigious family of scholars, indicating a background of wealth and intelligence. However, despite his exceptional capabilities, he was placed in Class D due to his egotistical and unpredictable behavior, which often sets him apart from his classmates. Kōenji exhibits a highly self-assured attitude, prioritizing his own interests over teamwork, making him one of the most enigmatic figures in Class D.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Rokusuke Kōenji is arrogant, self-entitled, and excessively overconfident, traits that likely stem from his wealthy upbringing and prestigious family background. His self-importance is evident from the moment he is introduced, as he speaks to Kikyō Kushida in a mockingly polite yet condescending manner while refusing to give up his seat for an elderly woman in need. His self-centered nature makes him stand out from his classmates, and he shows little regard for the opinions or needs of others.
Kōenji’s egotism and inability to cooperate with others were major factors in his placement in Class 1-D, though he appears to be entirely unbothered by this. He looks down on his classmates, as demonstrated when he taunted Ken Sudō about his potential expulsion following his altercation with students from Class 1-C. His inflated sense of self-worth is further highlighted during the cruise trip, where he was seen admiring himself in a mirror and refusing to dry off after swimming, dismissing it as “menial work beneath him,” which only fueled the disdain of his classmates.
Unsurprisingly, Kōenji’s self-serving and narcissistic nature is most evident during the special survival test, where he abandoned his class to avoid participation, directly causing them to lose points. He expressed no regret or concern over the consequences of his actions, reinforcing his indifference toward teamwork. In some ways, he mirrors Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, particularly in how he values his own time and privacy above all else. However, unlike Kiyotaka, Kōenji does not bother to conceal his arrogance or feign cooperation with others. He also does not care about the opinions of his peers or what happens to them, as long as he remains unaffected.
Unlike most of his classmates, Kōenji has no interest in accumulating private points, as his wealthy family can simply purchase them for him, making him indifferent to the struggles others face. His unshakable confidence and abilities allow him to remain unaffected by threats or intimidation, as he either laughs off attempts to control him or turns the situation in his favor, making him one of the most unpredictable figures in Class 1-D.
Appearance
Rokusuke Kōenji is a tall and well-built young man with straight, shoulder-length blonde hair and maroon-gradient eyes, giving him a striking and distinguished appearance. His refined features, combined with his self-assured posture and confident expressions, reflect his aristocratic background and self-perceived superiority.
He is most commonly seen wearing the standard Advanced Nurturing High School uniform, always maintaining a well-groomed and polished look that complements his elegant yet imposing presence. His appearance further reinforces his narcissistic personality, as he takes great pride in his looks and carries himself with an air of grandeur.
Abilities
Academic Abilities
Rokusuke Kōenji possesses a strong academic aptitude, as demonstrated by his ability to pass the mid-term exams without relying on Kikyō Kushida’s memorized test answers, unlike many of his classmates. His intelligence has been acknowledged by Honami Ichinose, the leader of Class 1-B, who noted that he is one of the few students in Class 1-D that should be watched carefully, suggesting that he has the potential to compete with students from the upper classes. However, his poor attitude and egotistical nature act as a major hindrance, preventing him from fully utilizing his capabilities for the benefit of his class.
Physical Abilities
Kōenji is exceptionally athletic, boasting remarkable speed and endurance. In the first volume of the light novel, he was revealed to be the fastest swimmer in his class, clocking a speed of 2.153 meters per second, a level comparable to that of world-class swimmers. Achieving such a feat requires a combination of advanced technique, precision, and significant physical strength, highlighting his extraordinary physical abilities.
Beyond swimming, Kōenji has displayed superior agility and combat potential. During an encounter with Ken Sudō, he taunted the latter into almost attacking him. However, Kiyotaka Ayanokōji later remarked that if Sudō had resorted to violence, Kōenji would have been able to retaliate and defend himself effectively, implying that he is more than just an average fighter, though his full combat abilities remain untested.
His speed and acrobatics were further demonstrated during the special survival test, where he effortlessly moved ahead of his classmates by jumping from tree to tree in the dense forest, showcasing his remarkable agility and coordination. His exceptional physical prowess, combined with his overwhelming confidence, makes him one of the most capable individuals in Class 1-D, despite his refusal to cooperate with others.
Etymology
The name Rokusuke (六助) is composed of the kanji 六 (roku), meaning “six,” and 助 (suke), meaning “assistance” or “help.” Despite the meaning of his given name suggesting support or aid, Kōenji’s self-serving nature contradicts this implication, as he rarely assists others and prioritizes his own interests.
His surname, Kōenji (高円寺), consists of the kanji 高 (kō), meaning “temple, shrine, or palace,” 円 (en), meaning “circle” or “perfection,” and 寺 (ji), meaning “temple.” This name is notably shared with a well-known Buddhist temple and neighborhood in Tokyo, further reinforcing the aristocratic and refined air that Kōenji carries himself with.
