Rita Ainsworth (リタ・エインワーズ) is a character in The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. She was formerly Mashiro Shiina’s roommate and caretaker during Mashiro’s time in England. Initially envious of Mashiro’s exceptional artistic talent, Rita encouraged her to pursue manga in hopes that she would fail. However, after Mashiro achieved success in Japan, Rita regretted her actions and traveled to Japan with the intention of convincing Mashiro to return to England.
Upon witnessing Mashiro’s passion and commitment to manga, Rita ultimately respects her decision and returns to England alongside Mashiro’s father, resuming her own studies in art. During her stay in Japan, she frequently argues with Ryuunosuke Akasaka, with whom she later develops a complicated relationship.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Rita is a strong-willed and determined individual who values chivalry, a trait she attributes to her English upbringing. She occasionally imposes these ideals on the male residents of Sakura Dormitory, often leading to humorous or awkward interactions. Rita is persistent in her goals, as seen in her initial efforts to persuade Mashiro Shiina to return to England and in her growing affection for Ryuunosuke Akasaka, despite his consistent resistance.
Though not officially a resident of Sakura Dormitory, Rita becomes closely involved with its members and is deeply invested in their well-being. Her active participation in key events at the dormitory has led others to regard her as the unofficial “eighth resident” of Sakurasou.
Rita is also an accomplished painter, possessing considerable artistic talent that is highly respected by her peers. In the anime, it is revealed that the painting Mashiro was captivated by during a moment of reflection was one of Rita’s own works, indicating the depth of her skill and artistic sensitivity.
Appearance
Rita is a tall and elegant young woman with fair skin, wavy light blonde hair, and light blue eyes. Her refined appearance reflects her British background and artistic sensibility. She often dresses in fashionable, modest Western-style clothing that emphasizes her graceful character.
Her poise and beauty are noted by several characters, and her mature style contrasts with the more casual or eccentric dress of the Sakurasou residents. During formal events or when she accompanies Mashiro’s father, she tends to wear more sophisticated attire, highlighting her cultured upbringing.
Etymology
The name Rita is of Latin origin and is often considered a shortened form of Margarita, meaning “pearl.” Her surname, Ainsworth, is of Old English origin, derived from a place name meaning “Aegen’s enclosure” or “farmstead of Aegen.”
Relationships
Ryuunosuke Akasaka
Rita’s initial impression of Ryuunosuke was negative due to his blunt and emotionally distant responses, especially regarding her expectations and desires. However, over time, she came to admire his intelligence and direct nature, recognizing that his insight helped her understand her own goals. This admiration gradually developed into romantic feelings, despite Ryuunosuke’s gynophobia and resistance from his AI assistant, Maid. Rita’s affection remains persistent and sincere, and among the members of Sakurasou, she cares for Ryuunosuke the most.
Maid
Maid, Ryuunosuke’s AI assistant, harbors a strong dislike for Rita, largely stemming from jealousy over Rita’s romantic interest in her creator. Maid often intercepts Rita’s messages and blocks her calls, refusing to connect her to Ryuunosuke. In one comedic instance, Maid even asked Sorata to “go to England and kill Rita” as a form of gratitude. Despite her antagonism, Maid ultimately acts in Rita’s interest at a critical moment by revealing Ryuunosuke’s past to her, breaking her own protocol to do so.
Mashiro Shiina
Rita and Mashiro share a complex relationship rooted in their shared past in England, where Rita served as Mashiro’s roommate and handler. Though Rita initially resented Mashiro’s exceptional talent and apparent emotional detachment from her peers, she introduced Mashiro to manga in the hopes that it would divert her from painting and shift her focus elsewhere. This decision led Mashiro to Japan and unexpected success as a mangaka, an outcome Rita later regretted.
Despite their rocky history, the two eventually reconcile. Rita acknowledges Mashiro’s unique perspective and comes to appreciate her as someone special, reaffirming the deep, if complicated, bond they share.
