Rinka Urushiba

Rinka Urushiba (漆葉 リンカ, Urushiba Rinka), also known as the White Girl (白い少女, Shiroi Shōjo), is the main protagonist of the series Tokyo ESP. She initially lived a normal yet impoverished life alongside her father, a former police officer, until a fateful encounter with the Glowing Fish granted her extraordinary ESP abilities. This event led to her involvement with Kyotaro Azuma, a self-proclaimed ESP vigilante, who introduced her to the world of espers. Since then, she has become his partner in crime-fighting, dedicating herself to protecting society from dangerous espers and those who abuse their supernatural powers.

Appearance in Anime

Rinka Urushiba is a young woman of average height with burgundy eyes and a distinctive hair color that varies between adaptations. In the manga, her hair is naturally white from the start, while in the anime, she originally has dirty blonde hair, which turns completely white upon the activation of her ESP abilities. Her hairline is jagged, giving her a slightly wild and unkempt appearance.

She has a full figure, pale skin, and a notable beauty mark beneath her left eye, adding a distinguishing feature to her delicate facial structure. Despite her dainty and feminine appearance, Rinka possesses exceptional agility and is highly skilled in melee combat, particularly in her signature fighting style, Psy-kick, which utilizes enhanced physical movements to take down opponents effectively.

Personality

Rinka Urushiba is a strong-willed and level-headed individual who initially desires nothing more than to live a normal life. However, after gaining ESP abilities, she reluctantly joins Kyotaro Azuma in his efforts to fight against rogue espers, despite her initial hesitation. While she may not fully embrace her new role at first, her sense of justice and responsibility ultimately push her to protect others and stand against those who misuse their powers.

She is highly persistent, refusing to back down from challenges, and maintains admirable resilience in the face of adversity. Though there are moments when she falls into despair, she is always brought back by the support of those close to her, such as Azuma, her father, or Roshi Yodani. Rinka is also notably thick-skinned, showing little concern for ridicule or criticism, and does not hesitate to mock others when the situation calls for it, displaying her sharp wit and confidence.

Plot

One day, Rinka Urushiba wakes up to find herself falling through the floor of her apartment, landing in the unit below completely naked. Shocked and frightened, she rushes back upstairs, only to realize that her hands phase through her phone, making it impossible to call her father. As her body continues to sink, she barely manages to escape her building. Just then, Kyotaro Azuma appears, covering her with a towel and urging her to calm down.

She suddenly recalls how it all began, while leaving school on her bike, she was distracted by a flying penguin and followed it to Tokyo Skytree, where she met a cheering Azuma watching a strange phenomenon. He pointed out Glowing Fish swimming in the sky, visible only to them, with the penguin in pursuit. As she watched in disbelief, one of the glowing fish descended and entered her body, causing her to lose consciousness.

Meanwhile, Rindo Urushiba, her father, is explaining his own strange experience with the Glowing Fish while listening to a message from Rinka. As he rushes to find her, his ESP abilities activate, unknowingly causing all metal objects, including cars, to be pulled toward him, forming a massive cluster. Rinka, now dressed, is determined to go to the hospital to understand her condition, but upon seeing the pile of cars surrounding her father, she realizes that he has also been affected by the Glowing Fish.

As bystanders panic, Azuma deduces that knocking Rindo unconscious might disable his uncontrollable magnetism, just as Rinka’s phasing stopped when she was asleep. However, Rinka points out that her father is a former police officer with incredible durability, and they don’t have time to wait. Remembering everything her father has done for her, she decides to take action immediately.

With onlookers watching, Rinka gains the nickname “White Girl” due to her striking white hair. She boldly phases through the tangled cars and delivers her signature Skull-Crushing Psy-Kick, knocking her father out. As the cars begin to collapse, Azuma teleports into the chaos, grabbing both Rinka and Rindo before escaping to Ikebukuro. Amazed, Rinka questions how they suddenly arrived in a different district, prompting Azuma to reveal that his ability is teleportation, and that he, too, is an esper.

Rinka stays home to take care of her father until he regains consciousness. She reflects on Azuma’s cryptic remarks about the Glowing Fish, realizing that he knows more than he lets on. Despite everything that has happened, she insists on going to work, knowing that she and her father desperately need money. However, upon arriving at the diner, she is startled to find Azuma waiting for her.

Shortly after, police officers enter the diner, asking about a notorious thief known as “Black Fist”, who has repeatedly evaded security, incapacitated guards, and stolen valuables without being seen. Since the art gallery next door is a potential target, the police are on high alert. The only clue about Black Fist is that they disappear in smoke, leading Rinka to suspect that Azuma might be the culprit.

Determined to uncover the truth, Rinka sneaks into the art gallery, preparing to confront Azuma if necessary. Inside, she finds the guards unconscious, with the crown they were protecting mysteriously floating in midair. Before she can react, Azuma disguised as “Crow Head” appears, insisting that he just arrived and had nothing to do with the attack. This means that the real criminal is still present.

A voice suddenly speaks, revealing surprise at Crow Head’s identity and recognizing Rinka as the “White Girl” from the car incident. Black Fist materializes from thin air, revealing that their ESP ability is invisibility. With their near-undetectable attacks, Black Fist easily dodges Rinka’s strikes, shattering a nearby sculpture in the process. Outraged by the reckless disregard for the artwork, Rinka declares that anyone who doesn’t value an item’s importance shouldn’t steal. However, Black Fist mocks her, sneaking up from behind and delivering a powerful punch.

At the last moment, Azuma teleports in to block the attack, saving Rinka. In an instant, he teleports all three of them into the air, high above the police cars gathered below. Trusting Rinka to finish the fight, he leaves Black Fist in her hands. Rinka lands a devastating Skull-Crushing Psy-Kick, slamming Black Fist into a police car, incapacitating them.

With the criminal apprehended, Crow Head dramatically declares that Black Fist is the true thief and proclaims that, as espers begin to rise in the city, only those with ESP abilities including himself and Rinka can fight against their kind. Rinka, horrified by his over-the-top theatrics, is teleported away before she can argue.

Later, Azuma formally asks Rinka to join him in tracking down new espers, believing that the Glowing Fish are still creating more superpowered individuals. Meanwhile, at home, Rindo worries about Rinka’s whereabouts, unaware that she is slowly being pulled deeper into the world of espers.

Abilities

Physical Permeation
Rinka’s primary ability, granted by the Glowing Fish, allows her to phase through solid objects at will. She can selectively control what passes through her, meaning she can walk through walls while keeping her clothes intact or even bring others along with her as long as they are physically connected to her.
However, her phasing ability has limitations. Unlike some other intangible espers, Rinka is unable to pass through living beings, including people and animals. Additionally, when she is not consciously maintaining control, objects automatically pass through her, which can lead to inconvenient or dangerous situations.

Skull-Crushing Psy-Kick
Rinka’s signature attack in the early stages of Tokyo ESP is a high-impact kick, utilizing momentum from falling great distances to strike her opponents with immense force. This move is strong enough to knock out her father, who is described as having a brick-wall-like build, yet it remains non-lethal, making it an effective incapacitation technique.

Thousand-Armed Counter
Through rigorous training with Roshi Yodani, Rinka has developed an advanced martial arts style that emphasizes speed, reflexes, and chi detection. Her honed reflexes allow her to effectively counter enemy attacks, reading their movements with exceptional precision.

One of the key aspects of this ability is chi sensing, which enables Rinka to:

  • Predict an opponent’s movements, making their attacks easier to counter and evade.
  • Fight even while blinded or with her eyes closed, relying on energy detection rather than sight.
  • See through illusions, preventing her from being easily deceived by visual distortions.
  • Sense the positions of hidden enemies, giving her an advantage in combat scenarios.
  • By combining her chi sensing with her combat proficiency, Rinka transforms from an ESP-dependent fighter into a skilled martial artist, capable of fighting powerful opponents even without using her phasing abilities.

    Relationships

    Kyotaro Azuma
Rinka and Kyotaro Azuma first met while chasing the Glowing Fish, but their relationship quickly developed into a deep bond. They support each other in battle, with Rinka drawing strength from Kyotaro’s presence. Their closeness is further emphasized when they go on a date, marking the beginning of their romantic connection.

When Kyotaro goes missing, Rinka remains determined to find him, holding onto the unwavering belief that he is still alive somewhere. At the end of Part One, they are seen holding each other, and in Part Two, they hold hands as they begin their secret mission, which causes them to disappear for ten months.

After enduring brainwashing at the hands of Smith, Rinka becomes a hardened fighter, but also emotionally disoriented and scarred. In this vulnerable state, she relies on Kyotaro for moral guidance and emotional support, helping her adjust to normal life again. This deepened connection leads Kyotaro to confess his love for Rinka, promising to always stay by her side. Rinka reciprocates his feelings, expressing that he is now her reason to “keep moving.”

    Rindo Urushiba
Rinka’s father, trainer, and caretaker, though in many ways, she takes care of him just as much. Rindo is a former police officer who, despite his somewhat laid-back nature, trained Rinka in CPC (Cross Panda Combat) from a young age, contributing to her strong fighting abilities. Their father-daughter relationship is filled with warmth and mutual support, with Rinka often worrying about his well-being, even as he remains deeply protective of her.

    Roshi Yodani
At first, Rinka sees Roshi Yodani as a perverted old man, primarily because of his inappropriate behavior, such as attempting to grope her. However, as she trains under him and gets to know him better, she comes to respect his abilities as a martial artist. Under Yodani’s guidance, Rinka sharply improves her combat skills, developing her signature Thousand-Armed Counter technique.

Her training under Yodani allows her to fight at a level much closer to Minami, proving that his mentorship played a crucial role in her growth as a fighter. Despite his flawed personality, Rinka acknowledges his skill and values what she learned from him.

    Legacy

Rinka Urushiba’s transformation from an ordinary girl into a determined esper hero defines the core theme of Tokyo ESP. Her journey, struggles, and ultimate resolve serve as a symbol of justice, perseverance, and the responsible use of power. Whether seen as a vigilante, a protector, or a hero, Rinka’s impact on the world of espers is undeniable, shaping the balance between justice and power in a world where ESP has changed everything.

    Trivia

      • Rinka bears a strong resemblance to Shizuru Imawano from Hajime Segawa’s previous work, Ga-Rei. This similarity in character design and traits suggests a stylistic connection between the two series.
      • Rinka’s nickname “White Girl” comes from her distinctive silver-white hair, making her an easily recognizable esper.
      • Unlike many ESP users, Rinka’s powers are more defensive and evasive, requiring her to rely on physical combat skills rather than brute force.
      • Her training under her father gives her an edge in hand-to-hand combat, making her a formidable opponent even without her ESP abilities.
      • The Glowing Fish phenomenon remains one of the series’ greatest mysteries, as it is responsible for granting ESP abilities to various individuals.
      • Rinka’s story draws inspiration from classic superhero and vigilante narratives, blending ESP abilities with crime-fighting action.
