Rika Saionji

Rika Saionji (西園寺 リカ, Saionji Rika), is a supporting character in the anime and manga series Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches). She is known as the seventh witch in the first generation of witches at Suzaku High School, possessing one of the most significant and mysterious powers among the original group. Rika’s role becomes crucial during the final stages of the original witch arc, where her power threatens to alter the memories and relationships of everyone around her.

Rika loses her witch abilities after the first ceremony conducted by Ryu Yamada, which erased all powers from the original witches. Despite losing her supernatural ability, she re-emerges as an important character in the later arcs, overseeing the creation of a new set of witches and temporarily taking over the position of student council president, setting her up as both a rival and narrative foil to Yamada and his friends.

Appearance in anime

Rika Saionji was once a normal student at Suzaku High School before being chosen as one of the Seven Witches. Her power granted her the ability to erase memories, making her the most dangerous and influential among the first generation of witches. Aware of the heavy burden her power carried, Rika began to distance herself from others and operated more secretively than the other witches.

After the original witches’ powers began to resurface and cause unrest, Rika emerged from obscurity to protect her own goals. She viewed the chaos as an opportunity to create a more controlled environment one in which she could govern supernatural power rather than let it spiral. Though her intentions may have seemed cold, she genuinely believed she was acting in the school’s best interest.

Appearance

Rika is a tall, attractive young woman with long dark brown hair, often tied up in a high ponytail, and sharp violet eyes. Her expressions typically remain neutral or mildly amused, giving her a composed and somewhat intimidating presence. As a student council leader, she maintains a clean and professional appearance, always dressed properly in the Suzaku High uniform with an air of authority.

Her posture, poise, and commanding gaze set her apart as someone who is always in control whether she’s leading the council or dealing with supernatural conflicts.

Personality

Rika is best described as cool, calculating, and composed. She carries herself with calm confidence and often approaches situations with logic rather than emotion. Though she isn’t outwardly cruel or aggressive, her pragmatism and willingness to use her powers for long-term benefit often create conflict with more emotionally driven characters like Yamada.

Despite her intimidating demeanor, Rika is not devoid of emotion. She simply places logic above personal feeling, believing that control and order are necessary to prevent chaos. She genuinely believes in managing supernatural forces responsibly even if it means making tough decisions. Over time, her more human side is revealed, particularly as she interacts with the second generation of witches and gradually steps back from authoritarian control.

Role in the Story

  • The Seventh Witch
Rika is revealed to be the seventh and final witch in the original witch system, holding the power to erase memories. Her ability poses the greatest threat to Yamada and the others, as it allows her to undo all the bonds and progress they’ve made. She initially uses this ability strategically to keep the existence of witches a secret.

  • The First Ceremony
When Yamada decides to hold a ceremony to erase all witch powers, Rika becomes the final obstacle. She tests Yamada’s resolve, challenging his ideals and emotional attachments. In the end, she loses her power along with the other witches but accepts the outcome with grace, acknowledging Yamada’s sincerity and determination.

  • The New Witch System
In the aftermath of the ceremony, Rika doesn’t disappear from the story. Instead, she resurfaces as a key orchestrator behind the second set of witches, now assuming a more authoritative role. Temporarily acting as the Student Council President, she supervises the selection of new witches and aims to create a more structured approach to supernatural governance one that contrasts with the chaos of the original system.

Relationships

Ryu Yamada
Initially a rival and potential enemy, Rika respects Yamada’s strong will and emotional conviction. Their interactions often reflect a clash of ideologies logic versus emotion. Though she challenges him, she eventually yields, acknowledging the merit in his approach.

Other Original Witches
Rika remains distant from the other witches, preferring to operate independently. She rarely shows emotional attachment to them, reinforcing her belief that witch powers should be controlled or erased to maintain peace.

Second Generation Witches
Rika takes on a leadership role in the formation of the new witches, treating them more as components in a system than individuals at first. However, her attitude softens slightly over time, showing hints of trust in their abilities and character.

Trivia

    • Rika’s name “Saionji” (西園寺) is commonly associated with nobility in Japanese fiction, matching her elegant and commanding personality.
      • Her power to erase memories is symbolic of her desire to control information and emotional consequences.
      • She never abuses her power recklessly, using it only when she believes it serves a greater good—even if her methods are cold.
      • She is one of the few witches who never bonds emotionally with Yamada but still influences his growth through opposition.
      • Her role in creating the second witch system mirrors her belief in order over chaos, even after losing her own abilities.
      • She remains composed in every situation and is rarely shown emotionally distressed, making her one of the most stable figures in the series.

    Legacy

      • Rika Saionji stands out as a formidable and morally complex character in Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo. As the final witch of the original set and the initiator of the second witch system, she serves as both an antagonist and ideological foil to Yamada. While not evil, her belief in strict control and her emotionally distant methods make her a fascinating contrast to the passionate and impulsive protagonists.
        • Her presence reinforces the series’ themes of free will, identity, and emotional bonds. By challenging the protagonists and creating obstacles with real weight, Rika pushes the story toward meaningful resolution. Though she ultimately loses her powers, her influence on the supernatural world at Suzaku High lingers, making her one of the most important and nuanced figures in the narrative.
