Rika Kawai (川井 リカ, Kawai Rika) is one of the main protagonists in the anime series Wonder Egg Priority. Outspoken and brash, Rika is known for her bold personality and her tendency to speak her mind, regardless of who she is interacting with even those she has just met. Despite her confrontational attitude, Rika plays a central role in the story’s emotional and psychological exploration, gradually revealing a more vulnerable and complex side of herself as the series progresses.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Rika Kawai initially comes across as brash, blunt, and often abrasive, making her seem unlikeable at first glance. She speaks her mind without hesitation, even to strangers, and has a tendency to mock or dismiss others. However, beneath her confident and energetic exterior lies a deeply wounded and emotionally complex individual. Rika uses humor, sarcasm, and a forceful personality as a defense mechanism to mask her underlying feelings of guilt, self-hatred, and unresolved trauma. Her vulnerability is rarely shown to others, surfacing only in private or emotionally intense moments.
Rika harbors a strained and hostile relationship with her mother, whom she openly resents. She blames her mother for her unhappy upbringing and feels unwanted, believing that her mother sees her as a mistake. Her father left at a young age, leaving behind only a faint memory of his voice and a superficial saying: “A pretty girl doesn’t need a wallet, someone will always pay for her.” Rika clings to this as a symbolic connection to him, shaping her shallow, image-focused worldview.
Despite her outward arrogance and judgmental behavior evident in her harsh comments about Chiemi, the girl she once bullied and is now trying to save Rika is not without self-awareness or growth. Her cruelty often masks internal turmoil, and as the story progresses, she begins to recognize the deeper emotional damage she carries, particularly after realizing that her father may not have been the idealized figure she imagined.
Rika also struggles with mental health issues, including suicidal thoughts and a history of self-harm. Though she claims to have stopped, the scars both physical and emotional remain. Her journey in Wonder Egg Priority reflects her attempts to cope with trauma, seek redemption, and find a sense of self-worth amidst the chaos of her past.
Appearance
Rika Kawai is relatively short for her age, standing at approximately 4’11” (149 cm). She has dyed blonde hair featuring a distinctive pink streak, while her brown eyebrows and hair roots suggest her natural hair color. Her most notable facial feature is her vivid blue eyes, which contrast strikingly with her bold hairstyle.
Her outfit consists of a bright red jacket with dark purple sleeves and decorative patches, worn over a black button-up shirt. She pairs this with pale blue jeans, a belt, and sneakers, creating a colorful and casual style. Rika also wears a black choker around her neck, further accentuating her bold and rebellious aesthetic.
Background
Before the events of Wonder Egg Priority, Rika Kawai was a junior idol affiliated with an underground idol group known as All-Out Kiss. During her time with the group, she developed a devoted fanbase, including a girl named Chiemi, who would attend every handshake event and spend large amounts of money to repeatedly meet Rika. Unbeknownst to Rika at first, Chiemi had been shoplifting and selling stolen goods to fund her obsession and even used her profits to buy gifts for Rika.
Upon discovering this, Rika was disgusted by Chiemi’s actions and, unwilling to accept money obtained through theft, confronted her. In a fit of frustration, she harshly rebuked Chiemi, declaring she would never be friends with a fan and cruelly insulting her appearance. Rika told Chiemi to stop attending the group’s events, not realizing the emotional impact her words would have. Shortly after, Rika learned from another fan that Chiemi had died implied to be by suicide and that she had starved herself following Rika’s rejection. At the funeral, Rika was confronted with the devastating consequence of her words.
Wracked with guilt, Rika began engaging in self-harm as a form of self-punishment. Although she publicly claimed she left the idol group because the other members were “too ugly,” it is strongly implied that Chiemi’s death was the true reason for her departure. Even after entering the Egg World, Rika frequently makes disparaging remarks about Chiemi, criticizing her appearance. These remarks, however, are understood to be part of Rika’s ongoing struggle with guilt and denial, serving as a defense mechanism to cope with the pain she caused.
Despite her outward cynicism, Rika ultimately fights to protect others in the Egg World as a way to atone for her past. Her journey is fueled by the desire to make amends for Chiemi’s death and to confront the emotional consequences of her former actions.
Abilities
In the Egg World, Rika Kawai wields a distinctive set of dual weapons that resemble a fusion between scissors and box cutters likely symbolizing her history of self-harm. These blades function effectively in close combat, with their irregular, angled design allowing them to be thrown like boomerangs for ranged attacks. When crossed, the two weapons can also serve as a makeshift shield, offering Rika a balanced mix of offense and defense during battle.
Rika also carries a pomander, which hatches into a turtle-like companion she names Mannen. This creature provides support during her encounters in the surreal Egg World, contributing to both her protection and combat effectiveness.
Etymology
Rika’s given name is written in katakana as リカ (Rika), which does not carry a specific meaning but often suggests a modern or stylish tone. Her surname, Kawai (川井), is composed of the kanji 川 (kawa), meaning “river” or “stream,” and 井 (i), meaning “well,” “mine shaft,” or “pit.”
Rika frequently makes a playful pun on her surname, referencing the word kawaii (可愛い), the Japanese word for “cute,” during her self-introductions highlighting both her idol background and bold personality.
