Rena Kariu (狩生 玲奈, Kariu Rena), later known as Rena Ōga (大神 玲奈, Ōga Rena) after marriage, is a supporting character in the anime and manga series ReLIFE. A determined and hardworking student at Aoba High School, Rena is a member of the girls’ volleyball club and a classmate of Arata Kaizaki during his ReLIFE experiment year. She is known for her fiery personality, competitive spirit, and later becomes the girlfriend and eventually the wife of Kazuomi Ōga.
Rena’s journey explores themes of self-confidence, rivalry, friendship, and love, making her one of the series’ most dynamic and emotionally resonant characters.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Rena Kariu is a third-year high school student at Aoba High School, recognized for her athletic talent and leadership within the volleyball club. Highly competitive and striving for excellence, Rena often puts intense pressure on herself to succeed, which initially leads to feelings of inferiority and rivalry particularly toward Honoka Tamarai, her close friend and fellow volleyball player.
Despite her stubbornness and pride, Rena is deeply loyal and earnest. Over the course of the series, her interactions with Arata Kaizaki, Kazuomi Ōga, and others help her confront her insecurities and grow into a more balanced, emotionally mature individual.
Appearance
Rena is a petite, athletic girl with short red hair styled in a bob cut and brownish-red eyes. She typically wears the standard Aoba High School uniform and sports her volleyball uniform during club activities. Her expressions often convey intensity, determination, and a quick temper, but she also has a warm and bashful side that emerges during personal and emotional moments, especially around Ōga.
Personality
Rena is strong-willed, competitive, and proud. She has a tendency to overexert herself, striving to meet self-imposed high standards and often feeling frustrated when she perceives herself as falling short especially in comparison to Honoka, whom she greatly admires but initially sees as a rival.
However, Rena is also kind-hearted, loyal, and hardworking, with a genuine desire to improve herself and support her friends. She struggles with expressing vulnerability but learns over time to open up about her fears and emotions, particularly through her developing relationship with Ōga.
Her tsundere tendencies (being outwardly combative but inwardly affectionate) are a defining part of her charm, especially in her romantic development.
Role in the Story
Rivalry and Friendship with Honoka Tamarai: Rena’s arc begins with her internal struggle against feelings of inadequacy when compared to her best friend Honoka, who surpasses her in both academics and athletics. Their tension builds over time, but with the help of Kaizaki and Ōga, Rena eventually reconciles with Honoka, realizing that their bond is one of mutual respect and genuine friendship, not competition.
Developing Feelings for Kazuomi Ōga: Throughout the series, Rena harbors a growing crush on Kazuomi Ōga, another of Kaizaki’s classmates. Their interactions are marked by awkward misunderstandings, bickering, and slow-burn romantic tension. Though initially stubborn about acknowledging her feelings, Rena eventually confesses, leading to the beginning of their relationship.
Future and Marriage: In the manga’s epilogue, it is revealed that Rena and Ōga marry, with Rena taking his surname and becoming Rena Ōga. This outcome highlights her full character arc from a fiery, insecure teenager to a confident young woman capable of building a future with the person she loves.
Relationships
Kazuomi Ōga: Her classmate, rival in academics, and eventual romantic partner. Their relationship evolves from casual banter to deep emotional support, culminating in mutual love and marriage. Ōga’s obliviousness and Rena’s tsundere personality create many comedic and touching moments throughout the story.
Honoka Tamarai: Rena’s best friend and former rival. Though Rena initially struggles with envy toward Honoka, their bond is reaffirmed when Rena overcomes her self-doubt. They share one of the most authentic portrayals of friendship in the series.
Arata Kaizaki: Initially just a seatmate and observer, Kaizaki plays an important role in helping Rena confront her emotions about friendship, rivalry, and self-worth. His guidance and perspective, drawn from his adult experiences, assist Rena in growing beyond her youthful insecurities.
