Appearance

Human Form:
Reiner has short blond hair, gold eyes, and a defined facial structure. His large stature, broad shoulders, and typically serious expression give him an intimidating presence. As a member of the Scout Regiment, he wears the regiment’s signature jacket with the Wings of Freedom emblem, over his standard military uniform and a green shirt underneath. In casual settings, Reiner is usually seen wearing a dark gray button-down shirt with rolled-up sleeves, dark green pants, and a brown belt.

By the year 854, Reiner’s appearance changes significantly. He sports a short goatee, and his overall weight loss causes his cheekbones to become more defined, giving his face a more angular appearance. He also grows taller. During his time in Marley, Reiner is typically seen in military uniform. When infiltrating Shiganshina, he wears a different military uniform, this time with a bulletproof vest, before transforming into his Armored Titan form.

After recovering from a coma, Reiner is seen without his military jacket, instead donning a white long-sleeved button-up shirt with black suspenders, a gray tank top, white military pants, and black combat boots. Later, he wears a gray long-sleeved shirt with sleeves rolled up to his elbows, paired with a shoulder holster and black pants, similar to the updated attire worn by the 104th Cadet Corps as he sides with their group to stop Eren.

Armored Titan Form:
Reiner’s Armored Titan form stands 15 meters tall and is characterized by plates of hardened skin covering most of its body, except for exposed muscle tissue on its cheeks, knees, elbows, and feet. Its lipless jaw reveals its sharp teeth, and its eyes are covered by white, organic lenses. The Armored Titan also has short, silver hair. Despite the heavy appearance of its armor, the Armored Titan demonstrates high agility and can move at impressive speed, particularly in combat against Eren Jaeger’s Attack Titan. However, its endurance is limited, as the Titan tends to run low on stamina during prolonged battles.

A close-up of Reiner Braun’s face after transforming into the Armored Titan, revealing the physical and emotional toll of his dual life. His expression reflects a mix of determination and conflict, emblematic of his struggle between loyalty to his comrades and the weight of his responsibilities as a warrior. This complexity adds depth to Reiner’s character in Attack on Titan.

Personality

Reiner Braun, as a child, was quiet and determined, driven by a strong desire to become a Warrior and a hero by eliminating the “devils” of Paradis Island. This belief was deeply rooted in Marley’s propaganda and his mother’s influence. After inheriting the Armored Titan, Reiner’s confidence was shaken when Marcel Galliard revealed that he wasn’t chosen for his abilities but as a weaker candidate. This left Reiner feeling insecure, though he continued to push forward with the mission.

Marcel’s death deeply affected Reiner, and he began to adopt parts of Marcel’s personality, becoming more decisive and assertive. However, this shift also marked the beginning of his inner conflict. He took on the role of leader among his comrades, even threatening Annie and Bertholdt to keep the mission on track. Despite this, Reiner began doubting his belief that his father would return if he succeeded, leading to feelings of inadequacy and guilt.

When Reiner joined the 104th Cadet Corps, he fully embraced the role of a dedicated soldier, admired for his leadership and kindness. He became a “big brother” figure, always looking out for others. But beneath this image, Reiner struggled with deep emotional trauma, particularly after he participated in the death of Marco Bodt. This guilt led to Dissociative Identity Disorder, causing him to shift between his Warrior and soldier personas, often losing track of his true self. Even after being exposed as a Marleyan infiltrator, Reiner struggled to reconcile these identities, until Bertholdt reminded him of his mission as a Warrior.

Reiner’s “Warrior” self was more ruthless and pragmatic, focused on completing the mission at any cost. Still, he constantly tried to understand others, like Eren Jaeger and Ymir, showing a desire to connect despite their differences. After the failure of the Paradis Island Operation and years of fighting in the Marley Mid-East War, Reiner became emotionally exhausted, no longer holding grudges against his former comrades. His family noticed a change in him, as he now saw the people of Paradis not as enemies, but as victims of circumstance, much like himself.

Plagued by nightmares and guilt, Reiner reached a point where he considered suicide. Yet, his sense of duty toward his friends and family prevented him from ending his life. Despite his inner turmoil, Reiner remained intelligent and composed, able to think strategically and lead effectively. He understood the complexities of war and was able to see the bigger picture, even when his own emotions weighed him down.

History

Reiner Braun was born in the Liberio Internment Zone in Marley to an Eldian mother, Karina Braun, and a Marleyan father. As communication between Eldians and Marleyans was forbidden, Reiner never met his father. From a young age, Reiner and his mother decided that he would join the Warrior program, hoping that by inheriting one of the Nine Titans, they could gain honorary Marleyan status and reunite with his father.

After joining the Warrior program, Reiner trained alongside other candidates, including Bertholdt Hoover, Annie Leonhart, and Porco Galliard. During training, Zeke Jaeger informed them about the upcoming mission to reclaim the Founding Titan from Paradis Island, which would involve selecting new Warriors to inherit the Titans. Reiner, mocked by Porco for his belief that he could become a Titan, argued with him, but their fight was stopped by Porco’s brother, Marcel. Despite the mockery, Reiner was determined to become a hero for Marley.

Reiner was ultimately chosen to inherit the Armored Titan, not because of his abilities but due to Marcel’s influence. Marcel intentionally lowered his own brother Porco’s standing to protect him, ensuring Reiner was selected instead. This revelation deeply affected Reiner, but he carried on with his mission.

In 845, at the age of twelve, Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie, and Marcel were sent on their mission to infiltrate Paradis and retrieve the Founding Titan. Before their departure, Reiner confronted his estranged father, telling him about his success and their potential future together as honorary Marleyans. However, Reiner’s father rejected him, calling him an “Eldian devil” and warning that they could never be together due to his Eldian heritage.

The Warriors crossed into Paradis under the cover of night. During their journey, Marcel revealed to Reiner that he had manipulated events to ensure Reiner inherited the Armored Titan instead of his brother. Before Reiner could fully process this, a Titan emerged from the ground and attacked them. Marcel saved Reiner by pushing him out of the way but was devoured by the Titan, who was later revealed to be Ymir.

Shocked by Marcel’s death, Annie and Bertholdt wanted to abandon the mission, but Reiner, fearing the consequences of failure, insisted on continuing. Annie, furious at Reiner’s perceived cowardice, beat him in anger. Despite this, Reiner regained his resolve, declaring himself the leader of the group and convincing the others to press forward with their mission.

Abilities

This transformation emphasizes his immense strength and resilience in battle, while also highlighting the internal conflict he faces as a soldier caught between two worlds. In Attack on Titan, Reiner’s dual identity plays a crucial role in the overarching narrative.

Omni-Directional Mobility Gear

As a top ten graduate of the 104th Cadet Corps, Reiner demonstrated exceptional skill with omni-directional mobility gear (ODM gear), making him one of the best hand-to-hand fighters. He even trained other capable fighters like Eren Jaeger. Despite not using ODM gear for four years, Reiner remained proficient, though he struggled slightly with newer models due to lack of experience.

This pivotal moment underscores the intense physical and psychological commitment required for transformation, illustrating the sacrifices made by warriors in Attack on Titan. Reiner’s actions reflect the gravity of his role in the ongoing conflict and the struggles he endures.

Reiner possessed the ability to transform into the Armored Titan (鎧の巨人 Yoroi no Kyojin), a 15-meter Titan with incredible combat capabilities. The Armored Titan was instrumental in breaching Wall Maria, and Reiner demonstrated great control over this form, retaining his human intelligence and using advanced hand-to-hand combat techniques.

Regeneration

Like other Titans, Reiner could regenerate wounds and even entire limbs, both in human and Titan forms. This ability helped him survive serious injuries, such as when Mikasa Ackermann sliced off part of his forearm. He was able to fully regenerate it by the time of his next battle.

Regeneration Withdrawal

Reiner could consciously control his regeneration, turning it off to avoid blowing his cover as a Titan spy. This made him unique among Titans, though Eren later demonstrated a similar ability.

Enhanced Strength

Reiner’s Titan form had immense strength, allowing him to destroy buildings and breach walls with ease. In battle, he overpowered Eren’s Titan form multiple times, showcasing his physical superiority. His hardened blows were extremely powerful, adding to his combat effectiveness.

Enhanced Speed

While the Armored Titan is heavily armored, Reiner could shed parts of his armor (such as at his joints) to increase his speed in combat. He used this tactic during battles, notably against Eren, to boost his agility and gain a strategic edge.

Armor Hardening

The Armored Titan was covered in hardened skin, making it nearly impervious to cannon fire, blades, and other Titan attacks. While the armor provided immense protection, it also had weak spots around the joints, such as the inner part of the knees and elbows, making it vulnerable in those areas.

Steam Generation

After destroying the inner gate of Wall Maria, Reiner’s Titan released steam, a byproduct of overheating. The steam could become superheated, potentially damaging anything in its vicinity.

Brain Function Transfer

During the Battle of Shiganshina District, Reiner showed the ability to transfer his brain’s functions to other parts of his body, enabling him to survive otherwise fatal injuries. He used this skill to stay alive after a direct strike to his neck by Levi Ackermann. This ability, while extremely difficult to execute, allowed him to maintain control of his Titan form and regenerate his head even after it was destroyed by a Thunder Spear. However, this ability caused temporary memory loss after regeneration.

Relationships

Bertholdt Hoover

Reiner’s childhood friend and closest ally in their mission to reclaim the Founding Titan. The two were inseparable, with Reiner often taking the lead while Bertholdt followed. Despite Bertholdt’s soft nature, Reiner admired his strength and even encouraged him to confess his feelings for Annie. Bertholdt’s death haunted Reiner deeply, contributing to his later struggles with depression and guilt.

Annie Leonhart

Annie and Reiner had known each other since childhood and worked together during the mission to Paradis. Although Annie often kept her distance from Reiner, likely due to lingering resentment over Marcel’s sacrifice, they still managed to cooperate effectively during critical battles. Reiner felt responsible for Annie’s capture and disappearance, which added to his mental anguish over the years. After being reunited following the Rumbling, Reiner expressed his remorse, and Annie forgave him.

Marcel Galliard

Marcel, a fellow Warrior, played a crucial role in Reiner’s development, both in life and death. Marcel’s death, caused by a Titan attack, left a lasting impression on Reiner, as he felt responsible for surviving instead of Marcel. Marcel’s sacrifice led Reiner to take on aspects of his personality, adopting his leadership role among the Warriors.

Zeke Jaeger

Zeke, Reiner’s superior in the Marleyan military, was both a mentor and a point of tension for Reiner. While Reiner respected Zeke’s strength and leadership, he once challenged him over their lack of effort in rescuing Annie. This led to a brief confrontation between them. Despite their differences, Zeke rescued Reiner after their defeat at Shiganshina. However, Reiner’s loyalty to Zeke diminished after Zeke’s betrayal during the Raid on Liberio.

Porco Galliard

Porco, Marcel’s brother, held a long-standing rivalry with Reiner, largely due to the fact that Reiner inherited the Armored Titan instead of him. Although Porco harbored resentment for Reiner, blaming him for Marcel’s death, their relationship improved slightly during the battle at Fort Slava. Despite their rivalry, Reiner and Porco fought side by side during critical battles, and Porco ultimately sacrificed himself to save Reiner.

Eren Jaeger

Reiner and Eren shared a close bond during their time as trainees, with Eren looking up to Reiner as a big brother figure. However, their relationship became hostile after Reiner’s true identity as the Armored Titan was revealed. Eren’s betrayal deeply hurt Reiner, but over time, both men realized they were on opposite sides of the same conflict. Despite their differences, they saw reflections of each other in their actions.

Armin Arlelt

Reiner respected Armin for his intelligence and quick thinking, even saving his life during the Female Titan’s attack. After Reiner’s betrayal, Armin felt a deep sadness at losing someone he considered a friend. Despite this, Reiner’s respect for Armin never wavered.

Jean Kirschtein

Initially, Reiner viewed Jean with disdain due to his selfish ambition to join the Military Police. However, during the Battle of Trost, Reiner began to respect Jean’s leadership abilities. After Reiner’s identity was revealed, Jean felt betrayed, and their relationship became strained. Despite this, the two later worked together to stop the Jaegerists, though Jean made it clear that he could never forgive Reiner for his past actions.

Sasha Braus

Reiner shared lighthearted moments with Sasha during training, but like others, she was horrified upon learning his true identity as the Armored Titan.

Historia Reiss

Reiner expressed a desire to marry Historia due to her kind and gentle nature, though it was unclear whether this came from his “soldier” or “Warrior” persona. Despite his romantic interest, Reiner’s main concern was keeping her safe, even as part of their mission.

Marco Bodt

Reiner’s guilt over Marco’s death weighed heavily on him, especially after his dual personality caused him to momentarily forget his role in the tragedy. The event contributed significantly to Reiner’s psychological breakdown, and his guilt persisted even four years later.

Ymir

Reiner and Ymir shared a complicated relationship, with both having a desire to protect Historia. Despite their differences, Reiner trusted Ymir more than Bertholdt did, but Ymir’s death caused him considerable grief.

Karina Braun

Reiner’s devotion to his mother was a major motivator in his decision to become a Warrior. However, after experiencing life on Paradis, Reiner grew disillusioned with her beliefs and became distant, especially after seeing how she encouraged Gabi to inherit his Armored Titan power.

Gabi Braun

Reiner’s younger cousin, Gabi, held a deep admiration for him, while Reiner held conflicted feelings about her loyalty to Marley. Despite Gabi’s determination to inherit the Armored Titan, Reiner wished to protect her from the tragic fate that came with the responsibility.

Falco Grice

Reiner saw promise in Falco, believing that he could surpass Gabi and inherit the Armored Titan. Despite initially intimidating him, Reiner grew protective of Falco, even shielding him from harm during battles.
