Rei Miyamoto (宮本 麗, Miyamoto Rei), is one of the main protagonists of the anime and manga series Highschool of the Dead. A second-year student at Fujimi Academy, Rei is a childhood friend and classmate of Takashi Komuro, whom she has known since kindergarten. She is a skilled fighter and a valuable member of Takashi’s group, helping them survive the global zombie outbreak known as the “Outbreak.”
Rei is known for her determination, combat skills, and emotional complexity. Her loyalty to her friends and fierce survival instincts make her a central figure in the group’s journey through the zombie-infested world. Rei’s romantic tensions with Takashi and others also play a major role in the series’ emotional narrative.
Background

Appearance in anime
Before the outbreak, Rei was a normal high school student and an active member of Fujimi Academy’s Sojutsu (spear fighting) club, where she developed her unique combat style. She had a strained romantic history with Takashi Komuro, and at the beginning of the series, she is dating Hisashi Igou, another classmate. Despite this, her bond with Takashi runs deep, creating tension after Hisashi’s death early in the story.
Following the outbreak of the undead virus, Rei becomes one of the first students to take up arms and fight, using her skills to defend herself and others. She later joins Takashi and several other students and teachers as they flee the school and struggle to survive in a collapsing society.
Appearance
Rei has light brown eyes and long orange-brown hair, typically worn in a high ponytail. She wears the standard Fujimi Academy girls’ uniform, which consists of a green skirt, white blouse with green trim, and a matching ribbon. As the series progresses and the group faces increasingly dire conditions, Rei’s outfit becomes more rugged, often stained or torn from battle.
Her appearance conveys both youthful charm and fierce capability, with strong facial expressions reflecting her emotional intensity and combat readiness.
Personality
Rei is strong-willed, passionate, and emotionally driven. She can be hot-tempered, especially when provoked or faced with injustice, and is unafraid to speak her mind. Despite her impulsive nature, she cares deeply about her friends and shows strong protective instincts, especially toward Takashi and the rest of their group.
Rei is also emotionally complex her past romantic conflict with Takashi leaves her conflicted between guilt, loyalty, and rekindled feelings, especially after Hisashi’s death. She can be jealous, insecure, and stubborn, but ultimately proves herself to be brave and resilient in the face of relentless danger.
Role in the Story
-
Early Survival and Group Formation
At the beginning of the outbreak, Rei is one of the first students to escape with Takashi, quickly forming the core survival group. When her boyfriend Hisashi is bitten and dies, Rei experiences a moment of trauma and rage, reinforcing her resolve to fight. -
Combat and Leadership
As a former Sojutsu club member, Rei specializes in polearm combat, using a spear fashioned from a broomstick before later arming herself with a M1A1 Carbine rifle fitted with a bayonet. She takes part in nearly every major battle, including fights against the undead and violent humans. Though not the official leader, Rei often challenges Takashi’s decisions, reflecting her assertive nature and desire to protect the group. Her willingness to confront danger head-on makes her a key member of their survival efforts. -
Emotional Struggles
Rei’s evolving relationship with Takashi is a core subplot. Her guilt over how their relationship ended prior to the outbreak, combined with her unresolved grief over Hisashi, causes her to fluctuate between romantic closeness and emotional distance. Despite this, her deep care for Takashi remains constant.
Relationships
Takashi Komuro
Rei’s childhood friend and on-and-off romantic interest. Their relationship is central to the story’s emotional weight, as they navigate unresolved feelings, grief, and survival. Though Rei is occasionally frustrated with Takashi’s indecisiveness, she trusts him and relies on him in critical moments.
Hisashi Igou
Rei’s boyfriend at the start of the series. His death from a zombie bite and subsequent reanimation has a profound impact on Rei, fueling her anger and trauma. His loss opens the door for her complicated reconciliation with Takashi.
Saeko Busujima
While not close at first, Rei respects Saeko’s strength and fighting prowess. As the two most capable female combatants in the group, they share mutual respect, though minor tension arises due to their differing personalities and mutual connection with Takashi.
Shizuka Marikawa & Saya Takagi
Rei supports and cooperates with Shizuka (the group’s adult figure) and Saya (their strategist), though she often acts more instinctively compared to Saya’s calculated approach.
