Rei Hino (火野レイ, Hino Rei) is the civilian persona and modern-day incarnation of Sailor Mars (セーラーマーズ, Seera Maazu) in the 1990s Sailor Moon anime series.

I am Sailor Mars, the guardian of fire and passion! In the name of Mars, I’ll punish you!
— Sailor Mars

Appearance

Civilian
Rei Hino has long, straight black hair with a subtle purple sheen and striking purple eyes. She frequently wears a traditional red and white priestess uniform when working at her family shrine or her winter school uniform. Her summer uniform includes a light gray vest over a short-sleeved sailor-style top with a dark red ribbon in the center, a gray skirt, white knee-high socks, and black shoes. Both her winter and summer school uniforms are dark gray with red accents.

For casual wear, Rei often sports a stylish teal leather jacket over an orange turtleneck, paired with a purple skirt, orange stockings, and pale yellow knee-length heeled boots.

In Sailor Stars, Rei’s school uniform is almost identical to her winter middle school uniform, with only a minor color variation.

Sailor Senshi
As Sailor Mars, Rei’s appearance includes a gold tiara with a red gem on her forehead. She wears a classic white sailor-style leotard with a red collar accented by a single white stripe, which complements her red skirt, back bow, and red high heels. Her front bow is purple with a central red round gem, and she accessorizes with red star-shaped earrings and white gloves trimmed with red.

Super Sailor Senshi
In the fourth season, when her powers are upgraded by Pegasus, Sailor Mars’s outfit gains additional features. Her leotard now includes short translucent sleeves, and her red star earrings are extended with two additional chains. The red gem at her bow’s center transforms into a heart, her back bow becomes longer, and her red choker is adorned with a star-shaped brooch.

Personality

Rei Hino is passionate, ambitious, and has a lively personality, with dreams of becoming a singer, songwriter, model, voice actress, and ultimately finding happiness in marriage. Her strong-willed and sometimes blunt nature can lead to conflicts, particularly with Usagi, as they often argue and tease each other. Despite her occasional doubts about Usagi’s leadership abilities, Rei is fiercely loyal to her and deeply values their friendship.

Rei’s affection for those she cares about is often expressed in unconventional ways. Her teasing of Usagi, especially early on, sometimes comes across as harsh, hurting Usagi’s feelings. Similarly, she jokes with Yuuichirou in a playful, almost dismissive way. Yet, beneath her fiery exterior, Rei cares deeply about her friends, especially Usagi, with whom she shares a uniquely close bond.

Despite their bickering, Rei and Usagi share a strong friendship, and Rei often stands by Usagi in times of hardship. In theSailor Starsseason, Rei is the first to whom Usagi confides about Mamoru’s silence, and Rei’s immediate concern reveals her empathy and protective nature toward her friend.

Rei attends a private Catholic school, separate from her friends, which is run by nuns. She also works at the Hikawa Shrine alongside her grandfather, who is the head priest, where she actively takes on priestess duties, reflecting her spiritual side.

Information

Sailor Moon (Season 1)
Rei Hino first appears in episode 10, scolding her grandfather for bothering the female visitors at the shrine. Usagi and her friends note how beautiful Rei is. When Rei senses an evil presence in the shrine, she performs herAkuryo Taisanritual, accidentally placing the ward on Usagi, causing her to faint. Rei apologizes, admitting her recent predictions have been off. When rumors start blaming Rei for recent disappearances, she displays her fiery temper in response.

After another bus vanishes, Usagi informs Rei, which angers her as she insists she’s not involved. Rei discovers a pen near the scene, growing suspicious of Jadeite’s presence. When she consults the sacred fire, it confirms Jadeite’s role in the disappearances, but he soon transports her to another world, capturing her. In her struggle, the Mars symbol appears on her forehead, awakening her powers. Usagi, as Sailor Moon, arrives and frees her. Rei transforms into Sailor Mars for the first time and defeats the youma Kigaan with herFire Soulattack, saving the captured people with Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask.

Throughout the first season, Rei and Usagi frequently bicker, with Rei often calling Usagi a crybaby and doubting her suitability as leader. Despite this tension, Rei deeply respects Usagi, and they form a strong friendship. Rei even holds the Moon Stick for Usagi at one point when infiltrating the Dark Kingdom.

Rei briefly dates Mamoru, though their relationship ends when he awakens as Prince Endymion and Usagi as Princess Serenity. Rei’s affection for Mamoru was playful, while Mamoru mostly tolerated the relationship. In episode 45, Rei sacrifices herself fighting the DD Girls, appearing later as an encouraging spirit to Usagi, who ultimately defeats Queen Beryl. Rei and the others are reincarnated, with no memory of their past lives or powers.

Sailor Moon R
For two months, Rei lives a normal life until the appearance of two aliens, Ail and An. Luna and Artemis restore Rei’s memories, allowing her to rejoin the Senshi as Sailor Mars. During an autumn festival at her school, Rei is attacked by the Cardian Seiren, which drains her energy and destroys her music sheets. Fueled by anger, she activates herFire Soul Birdattack, incinerating the Cardian and restoring her friends’ energy.

When Chibiusa arrives, she unwittingly causes chaos, even knocking out Rei and her friends with a sleeping drug in their tea. Rei later defends her grandfather and herself from Koan, a member of the Black Moon Clan, clashing with her using herBurning Mandalaattack. Rei becomes Koan’s rival, as both have fire-based powers. In an emotional confrontation, Rei convinces Koan to abandon the Black Moon Clan, allowing Sailor Moon to purify her with the Silver Crystal.

Sailor Moon S
Following the Black Moon Clan’s defeat, Rei has disturbing visions of a dark force threatening Earth, featuring three lights that merge and disappear. She becomes one of the first victims of the Death Busters, having her pure heart crystal extracted by a Daimon. Mysterious figures save her, returning her pure heart crystal.

Sailor Moon SuperS
Throughout the SuperS season, Rei joins the other Senshi in defending against Queen Nehellenia’s forces, facing new threats and challenges alongside her friends.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars
In theStarsseason, Rei continues to support Usagi, who confides in her first when Mamoru stops contacting her. Rei is deeply concerned, wondering aloud why Usagi must endure so much pain, showing her loyalty and emotional support as Usagi’s close friend.

Skills and Abilities

  • Precognition: Rei possesses a strong sense of precognition, allowing her to foresee events in the near future. However, her visions aren’t always accurate and sometimes fail her.

  • Pyromancy: Rei has a powerful connection with fire, enabling her to create images within flames to reveal potential future events. These fiery visions are often cryptic and not always reliable.

  • Purification: Even in her civilian form, Rei can perform purification rituals usingofuda, Shinto talismans meant to ward off evil spirits. She invokes this power with the chant“Evil Spirit, Disperse!”Although effective, this ability can also inadvertently cause harm to ordinary people, as seen when she accidentally “purifies” Usagi in episode 10.

  • Sixth Sense: Rei has an intuitive “sixth sense” for detecting evil presences and impending danger. However, her sensitivity to these forces sometimes misleads her, as when she mistook Usagi for an evil spirit.

  • Expert Archer: As part of her training as a shrine priestess, Rei is highly skilled in archery. This expertise is channeled into herMars Flame Sniperattack, where she launches a fiery arrow at her enemies.

Etymology

Etymology

  • Rei: Her given name,Rei(レイ), is written in katakana, which does not carry a specific meaning in Japanese. However, in the Chinese versions of the series, Rei’s name is written with the character “麗,” which sounds similar to “Rei” and means “beauty” or “lovely.”

  • Hino: Rei’s surname combines the kanjihi(火), meaning “fire,” withno(野), which translates to “field” or “civilian.” The syllablenocan also function as a possessive, so her full name,Hino Rei, can be interpreted as “Fire of Rei,” playing on her association with fire as Sailor Mars.

This structure creates a pun that reflects Rei’s elemental powers and fiery personality, linking her identity closely with her role as the Guardian of Fire.
