Rea Sanka (散華 礼弥, Sanka Rea), is the main female protagonist and deuteragonist of the anime and manga series Sankarea: Undying Love. The daughter of Dan’ichirō Sanka and Aria Sanka, Rea comes from a wealthy but emotionally oppressive household. After a tragic and fateful incident, she becomes a zombie and begins living with Chihiro Furuya, the series’ protagonist, at his family’s temple residence.
Rea’s journey from a sheltered, broken girl to someone seeking freedom and identity as an undead being is at the heart of the story. Her character explores themes of self-ownership, emotional trauma, and transformation, both literal and metaphorical.
Background

Appearance in anime
Rea was born into the prestigious Sanka family, but her early life was far from happy. Her biological mother passed away shortly after childbirth, and she was subsequently raised by her emotionally abusive and controlling father, Dan’ichirō. Her stepmother, Aria Sanka, remained distant and cold. Rea was kept under constant surveillance, treated like a doll or a possession by her father, and denied normal social experiences.
Her life took a dramatic turn when she met Chihiro Furuya, a boy obsessed with zombies. After assisting him in his experiments to revive his pet cat using a resurrection potion, Rea later consumes the potion herself in a desperate suicide attempt to escape her miserable life. This results in her transformation into a zombie, forever altering the course of her existence.
Appearance
Rea is a beautiful teenage girl with long black hair, pale skin, and striking violet eyes. Her typical attire before becoming a zombie consisted of elegant dresses, often chosen by her father to reinforce her image as a refined, upper-class daughter. After becoming undead, she often wears more casual clothes, particularly Chihiro’s oversized school uniform, symbolizing her new independence.
As a zombie, her complexion becomes even paler, and she occasionally exhibits subtle physical symptoms such as bruising or body stiffening especially when she is emotionally distressed or physically neglected.
Personality
Initially, Rea is soft-spoken, gentle, and emotionally fragile, shaped by years of emotional repression and control. Despite her calm exterior, she harbors a deep longing for freedom and self-identity, often fantasizing about living a normal life outside her father’s mansion.
After her transformation, Rea slowly becomes more assertive, independent, and confident, though she continues to struggle with her place in the world as a zombie. Her experiences with Chihiro and his family help her rediscover joy, connection, and a sense of belonging. While she has moments of emotional vulnerability, Rea is also capable of bravery and determination, especially when it comes to protecting the people she cares about.
Role in the Story
-
The Tragic Rebirth
Rea’s story begins as a tale of desperation and escape. Trapped in a loveless home and overwhelmed by her father’s obsession, she consumes the resurrection potion hoping to end her suffering. Instead, her death at the bottom of a cliff leads to her reawakening as a zombie, giving her the second chance at life she never expected. -
Living at the Furuya Temple
After her transformation, Rea begins living with Chihiro Furuya, hiding her undead status from society. She starts adapting to normal life, forming bonds with Chihiro’s eccentric family while grappling with the challenges of her undead condition, such as physical degeneration and the need for preservation techniques. -
Emotional Evolution and Conflict
As the story progresses, Rea develops romantic feelings for Chihiro, even as she tries to understand her identity and purpose. Her father continues to pursue her, leading to a violent confrontation that ultimately frees Rea from his influence. Her struggle shifts toward survival and self-determination, especially as the effects of zombification evolve.
Relationships
Chihiro Furuya
The protagonist and Rea’s closest friend and love interest. Chihiro is the first person to accept her for who she is, zombie or not. Their bond grows as they support each other through the emotional and physical difficulties that arise, and their relationship becomes a central emotional pillar of the series.
Dan’ichirō Sanka
Rea’s controlling father, whose obsession with preserving her purity and beauty is deeply disturbing. His overprotectiveness crosses into abuse, and he becomes one of the main antagonists of her early story arc. Rea ultimately rejects him to claim her freedom.
Aria Sanka
Rea’s stepmother, who is emotionally distant and scornful. Though she plays a minor role, her cold treatment of Rea further contributes to Rea’s feelings of alienation and loneliness.
Furuya Family
Rea bonds with Chihiro’s family, particularly Ranko, who initially sees her as a rival but comes to accept her. Living in the temple gives Rea a chance to experience warmth and normalcy for the first time.
