Ranko Saōji

Ranko Saōji (左王子 蘭子, Saōji Ranko), is a supporting character in the anime and manga series Sankarea: Undying Love. She is the first cousin of Chihiro Furuya, the series’ protagonist, and is known for her bold personality, flirtatious teasing, and strong emotional attachment to him. Though often referred to by her nickname “Wanko” (a combination of her name and a playful twist), Ranko insists that Chihiro use “-san” when addressing her a running joke that showcases their close yet bickering relationship.

Ranko’s affection for Chihiro places her in direct rivalry with Rea Sanka, the female lead of the series, and she often expresses jealousy or sarcasm toward their budding romance. Despite her teasing and confrontational attitude, Ranko plays an important emotional role in the story and offers insight into Chihiro’s childhood and family background.

Background

Appearance in anime

Ranko is a close childhood friend and cousin of Chihiro, having grown up with him and formed a bond that borders on sibling familiarity and romantic tension. Her affection for him grew as they matured, but she often masks it with teasing or mock-flirtatious behavior. She moved in with Chihiro’s family due to complications within her own, becoming a frequent presence at the Furuya household.

Though she doesn’t openly admit her feelings, Ranko’s actions and reactions to Rea Sanka’s appearance in Chihiro’s life reveal deep-seated emotions and unresolved jealousy. She struggles to understand how to express her love while maintaining the appearance of a strong-willed and independent girl.

Appearance

Ranko has a curvaceous and attractive figure, with long, light brown hair usually tied into a ponytail, and golden brown eyes. She has a tan complexion, which further distinguishes her from Rea’s pale, elegant aesthetic. Her casual fashion choices often emphasize her figure, and she frequently wears shorts or tank tops, adding to her confident and slightly provocative image.

Her expressions are vibrant, often shifting between smug teasing, flirtation, and occasional moments of vulnerability.

Personality

Ranko is outspoken, energetic, and playful, especially when around Chihiro. She loves teasing him and calling him out on his quirks, especially his obsession with zombies. Her brash nature often masks a more sensitive, emotional side, especially when she feels threatened by Rea’s growing closeness with Chihiro.

She’s not afraid to express jealousy, though she rarely does so directly. Despite the rivalry, Ranko is also capable of kindness, especially when Chihiro is in distress. Her playful attitude often serves as comic relief, but she is also a source of emotional tension in the series’ romantic triangle.

Role in the Story

  • Cousin and Childhood Friend
Ranko is introduced early on as Chihiro’s cousin and close friend, already living with the Furuya family. She often takes on the role of nagging older sister, mocking Chihiro’s fascination with zombies while secretly admiring his passion and uniqueness.

  • Rivalry with Rea
When Rea Sanka, a wealthy girl-turned-zombie, enters Chihiro’s life, Ranko immediately becomes jealous and competitive. Though she tries to downplay her feelings, she often gets irritated by Rea’s closeness to Chihiro and reacts with sarcasm or passive-aggressive remarks.

  • Emotional Support
Despite her jealousy, Ranko occasionally offers genuine support to both Chihiro and Rea. She shows a more mature and caring side during emotional conflicts, especially when Chihiro is in danger or struggling with the consequences of Rea’s condition. This duality makes her more than just a comic relief or romantic rival.

Relationships

Chihiro Furuya
Ranko’s cousin and unrequited love interest. She shares a long history with Chihiro and is often flirty, sarcastic, or possessive toward him. Though she never directly confesses, her actions reveal deep affection and loyalty, even when she’s frustrated with his obliviousness.

Rea Sanka
Ranko’s romantic rival and source of frequent jealousy. While she does not outright hate Rea, she views her as competition for Chihiro’s heart and occasionally challenges or mocks her. Over time, however, Ranko shows hints of reluctant respect for Rea’s sincerity and struggles.

Furuya Family
As a member of the Furuya household, Ranko is well-integrated and gets along with the others, often taking part in family interactions and daily routines with Chihiro and his grandfather.

Trivia

    • Her nickname “Wanko” is a mix of her given name Ranko and a play on the word “wan” (the Japanese onomatopoeia for a dog’s bark), reflecting her energetic and yappy demeanor.
      • Despite teasing Chihiro about his zombie obsession, Ranko has moments where she genuinely tries to understand his interests.
      • Her insistence that Chihiro use “-san” when addressing her is part of a long-running joke that highlights their power dynamic and her desire to be taken seriously.
      • She has a strong sense of pride, which prevents her from openly confessing her feelings.
      • Ranko often acts before thinking, which leads to comedic and emotional misunderstandings throughout the story.

    Legacy

      • Ranko Saōji serves as the spirited counterbalance to the somber and mysterious Rea Sanka. As the “childhood friend” archetype, Ranko offers readers a more down-to-earth and relatable perspective in contrast to the supernatural elements of the series. Her complex emotions, vibrant personality, and occasional vulnerability make her more than just a rival or comedic foil.
        • Her presence enriches the romantic tension of Sankarea, adding emotional depth and realism to the story’s central triangle. While she may not receive the same attention as the undead heroine, Ranko leaves a lasting impression as a loyal, fiery, and refreshingly honest character.
