Quin

Quin (クイーン, Kuin) is a supporting character in Death Parade and a worker in the Information Bureau, where she is responsible for transmitting the memories of the deceased to arbiters and evaluating their performance. Her role is crucial to the judgment system, as the memories she delivers allow arbiters to conduct fair and informed decisions regarding a soul’s fate.

Before her current position, Quin served as the arbiter of Quindecim, the bar on the 15th floor. She eventually left the position and was succeeded by Decim, whom she helped transition into his role. Despite moving to a more administrative post, Quin continues to play an important part behind the scenes, ensuring the system operates smoothly while offering her insight and experience when needed.

Appearance in Anime

Quin is a pale-skinned woman of average height with a distinctive and somewhat casual appearance compared to other arbiters and staff. She has short dark brown hair with bangs that nearly cover her forehead. One of her most noticeable features is her light green eyes, though her right eye is covered with a yellow eye patch secured by a brown strap. This eye patch contains a lens device used to analyze and review the memories of the deceased, essential to her work in the Information Bureau.

Her outfit reflects her role as a data analyst rather than a field arbiter. She wears a white lab coat over a gray hoodie, paired with a long pale blue skirt and beige flat shoes, giving her a relaxed, professional look. She pins her staff emblem on the left side of her lab coat’s collar, indicating her official position within the afterlife’s administrative system.

Personality

Quin is a lively and talkative individual, often described as a chatterbox, which sets her apart from the more stoic arbiters and staff in the afterlife. She has a laid-back and friendly personality, and is particularly close to Nona, with whom she shares a warm and easygoing relationship.

One of Quin’s most defining traits is her love for alcohol, especially sake and spirits from the world of the living. Her enthusiasm for drinking is often played for lighthearted moments in the series, and she takes great joy in discussing or sampling various beverages.

Despite her cheerful exterior, Quin has shown signs of regret about her current role in the Information Bureau. Though she is competent in her work reviewing and transmitting the memories of the dead to arbiters she finds the job endless and fast-paced, lacking the kind of personal interaction she enjoyed while serving as an arbiter. This suggests a lingering attachment to her former post and a hint of dissatisfaction with the bureaucratic nature of her current duties.

Plot

Quin is first introduced through her role in the Information Bureau, where she is prompted by Nona to transmit the memories of Decim’s incoming guests. These memories are crucial to the judgment process and are delivered through telepathic communication, allowing arbiters to evaluate the lives of the deceased.

Her name comes up again when Nona explains to Decim that he had failed Quin’s Memory Test, a hidden evaluation designed to observe how arbiters handle misleading information. Decim’s attention was diverted by a decoy guest, signaling a lapse in his judgment a matter that concerned Nona.

Quin makes her first full appearance when she visits Nona’s quarters at Ginta for a few drinks. During this episode, Decim recounts Quin’s backstory in a flashback to a dark-haired woman. Previously, Quin had served as the arbiter of Quindecim, and during her final judgment involving two guests, Nona simultaneously tested Decim and Ginti, having them observe the game and make use of the judgment devices. Quin excitedly handed over her position to Decim—along with all of the bar’s alcohol supplies—and celebrated with him after the successful transition. She was impressed by Decim’s martini-making skills, and surprised but optimistic upon discovering his growing respect for humans. Before departing Quindecim, she advised him to find something he treasures, hinting at the importance of emotional grounding even for an arbiter.

Later, it becomes apparent that Quin is feeling the toll of her new job. When Nona checks in on her, Quin complains about the endless workload in the Information Bureau and remarks that humans are dying too quickly. During their conversation, she expresses concern over Nona’s focus on Decim, especially in light of his implanted emotions, and warns her to be cautious around Oculus. Before she can hear Nona’s answer, she passes out from drinking too much.

Quin later appears alongside Clavis, helping to counsel Nona as she grows concerned over Decim’s uncertainty about judgment. At Nona’s request, Quin sends Chiyuki’s memories to Decim and recompiles them, though she is initially puzzled by the task. As a reward for her help, Nona offers Quin a bottle of whiskey from the world of the living, which Quin gratefully accepts with great enthusiasm.

After the memory compilation, Quin and Nona reflect on the complexity of life, agreeing that while memories may seem vivid and beautiful at first glance, life is not made of beautiful things alone.

In the final episodes, Quin joins Nona and Castra for brunch on the 90th floor. As the threat of Oculus discovering Decim’s emotional growth becomes more real, Quin and Castra express concern. Nona, however, instructs them to let things unfold as they are, indicating her trust in Decim’s evolving humanity.

Relationships

Decim
As Decim’s predecessor, Quin holds a deep respect and admiration for him. She was impressed by his performance in managing Quindecim and praised his abilities early on. Quin views Decim as her worthy successor, and even expressed pride in his growth particularly his increasing empathy for humans, which she found surprising but encouraging. She offered him valuable advice before leaving her former post, urging him to find something he treasures, a sentiment that reflects her belief in his potential to grow beyond the rigid constraints of an arbiter.

Nona
Quin shares a close and friendly relationship with Nona, often enjoying her company and appreciating the moments they spend together especially when Nona brings her alcohol from the world of the living, which Quin loves. Their bond goes beyond casual conversation, as Quin has expressed personal regrets to Nona and trusts her enough to speak openly about her dissatisfaction with her current position in the Information Bureau. She is also willing to assist Nona with difficult tasks, such as locating and compiling specific memories, showing a strong sense of loyalty and camaraderie.

Castra
Quin appears to be on good terms with Castra, another administrator in the afterlife system. The two are often seen together during meetings with Nona and share a cordial and professional rapport. Their regular interactions suggest that Quin is well-integrated into the upper ranks of the organization and is trusted among her peers.

Trivia

    • Quin demonstrates the ability to adjust her attitude professionally when necessary. In Episode 7, despite her normally upbeat and casual personality, she appears solemn and composed in front of her final guests at Quindecim, showing that she can adopt the appropriate tone required for judgment.
    • She is the only known arbiter to be exempt from the First Rule of Arbiters: “Arbiters cannot stop making judgments, for it is more than their career it is why they exist.” Quin retired from her role as an arbiter and now works in the Information Bureau, where she processes and delivers the memories of the deceased. Her exception suggests a unique case within the system, possibly indicating her experience or special relationship with Nona.
    • In the anime’s opening sequence, Quin is briefly shown juggling five wine bottles at once, a nod to her lighthearted personality and her enthusiasm for alcohol, especially spirits from the world of the living.
