Portgas D. Ace, born as Gol D. Ace and nicknamed “Fire Fist” Ace, was the biological son of the late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, and Portgas D. Rouge. He was the sworn older brother of Monkey D. Luffy and Sabo and played a pivotal role in the pirate world. Ace initially captained the Spade Pirates before joining the Whitebeard Pirates as the 2nd division commander. After eating the Mera Mera no Mi, he gained the ability to control and transform into flames, earning his infamous nickname.
Background
Appearance in Anime
Ace was born shortly after his father, Gol D. Roger, turned himself in to the Marines. To protect him from the World Government, his mother, Portgas D. Rouge, extended her pregnancy to twenty months using sheer willpower, sacrificing her life in the process. Before his execution, Roger entrusted Ace’s care to Monkey D. Garp, who raised him in secret. Growing up in the Goa Kingdom alongside Luffy and Sabo, Ace formed a strong bond with his sworn brothers and dreamed of becoming a pirate.
As an adult, Ace became the captain of the Spade Pirates, quickly gaining notoriety for his strength and abilities. He was later recruited into the Whitebeard Pirates, where he found a father figure in Whitebeard and rose to the position of 2nd division commander. Despite his success, Ace harbored doubts about his worth, stemming from his lineage as Roger’s son.
Appearance
Ace was a tall, muscular young man with tan skin and black hair. He often wore an open shirt or no shirt at all, showing off his tattoos, which included “ASCE” on his left arm (with the “S” crossed out as a tribute to Sabo) and the Whitebeard Pirates’ Jolly Roger on his back. Ace’s signature outfit featured a cowboy hat with orange beads and a pair of goggles, along with a dagger he rarely used. His confident demeanor and carefree smile reflected his adventurous spirit.
Personality
Ace was a loyal and protective individual who deeply valued his friends and family. Despite his fiery powers, Ace was known for his calm and cheerful personality, though he could be fiercely determined and headstrong when protecting his loved ones. He carried a strong sense of guilt over his lineage as Roger’s son, often questioning his right to exist. Ace’s selflessness ultimately defined his character, as he sacrificed his life to save Luffy during the Summit War of Marineford.
Role in the Story
Arabasta Arc
Ace was first introduced in the Arabasta Arc, where he briefly allied with the Straw Hat Pirates. He demonstrated his powers and left a lasting impression on Luffy’s crew before continuing his quest to hunt down Blackbeard.
Summit War Saga
Ace’s hunt for Blackbeard ended in his capture by the World Government, who sentenced him to public execution. This decision led to the Summit War of Marineford, a massive clash between Whitebeard’s forces and the combined strength of the Marines and the Seven Warlords. Although Ace was freed by Luffy and his allies, he sacrificed himself to protect his brother from Admiral Akainu, dying with gratitude for the love he received from his friends and family.
