Pai (sometimes romanized as Pie) is a recurring antagonist in the Tokyo Mew Mew manga and anime series. He is one of the three alien warriors alongside Quiche and Tart who come to Earth under the command of Deep Blue, seeking to reclaim the planet for their species. Unlike his comrades, Pai is characterized by his calm, analytical nature and preference for logic over emotion, making him the most serious and disciplined member of the alien trio.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Pai is portrayed as the most calm, analytical, and disciplined member of the alien trio. During his battles with the Mew Mews, he approaches combat with a scientific mindset, often calculating the “mortality rate” of each Chimera Anima he unleashes. When his creations are defeated, he simply observes that stronger tactics will be required, underscoring his pragmatic and strategic nature. Unlike Quiche and Tart, Pai seldom displays emotion, rarely smiling or taunting his enemies, even after Deep Blue’s awakening.
Loyalty is central to Pai’s character, as he remains the most devoted follower of Deep Blue, carrying out his missions with precision and seriousness. His personality parallels that of Zakuro Fujiwara, who is also calm and collected, though Pai is far less expressive, masking nearly all emotion behind a façade of stoicism.
Over the course of the series, Pai’s main rival becomes Mew Lettuce (Retasu Midorikawa). While Lettuce advocates for peace and denounces meaningless bloodshed, Pai repeatedly insists that conflict between their races is inevitable and coexistence impossible. However, her persistence eventually softens his rigid worldview. In the climax, Pai’s actions reveal hidden compassion when he sacrifices himself to save Lettuce and the other Mew Mews from the destructive power of the Mew Aqua, demonstrating that beneath his strict sense of duty lies a capacity for empathy.
Appearance
Pai is depicted as the most mature and masculine member of the alien trio, reflecting both his age and his serious personality. He has short, greyish-purple hair, with part of it tied on the left side using a brown hair tie, and indigo-colored eyes that enhance his stern expression. His build and height emphasize his role as the eldest and most physically imposing of the aliens.
His attire typically consists of a sleeveless shirt with a transparent midsection, paired with loose-fitting pants and wristbands that extend along his forearms. The design of his outfit highlights both his practicality in combat and his more formal, disciplined demeanor compared to Quiche and Tart.
As the oldest and most intelligent of the group, Pai’s appearance reinforces his role as the most serious and loyal subordinate of Deep Blue, rarely showing levity or playfulness during his missions to eliminate the Mew Mews.
History
Pai arrives on Earth together with Tart to support Quiche in preparing the planet for the return of Deep Blue. From the outset, he demonstrates his calm and analytical nature, escalating the strength of the Chimera Animas he unleashes against the Mew Mews and noting when stronger tactics are required after their defeats. Unlike his comrades, Pai seldom displays emotion, maintaining a composed and calculating demeanor even after Deep Blue’s awakening.
In the manga, Pai remains a loyal subordinate throughout the conflict. After Deep Blue’s defeat, he departs Earth alongside Quiche and Tart to return to their homeworld.
In the 2002 anime adaptation, Pai’s role takes on a darker and more tragic dimension. In one arc, he kills Tart after Tart attempts to protect the Mew Mews, highlighting Pai’s unwavering loyalty to Deep Blue. Later, when Deep Blue destroys their base and annihilates all of the Chimera Animas, Pai turns against him. Using his signature weapons, a pair of fans, he shields the Mew Mews from destruction, sacrificing his life in the process. Before dying, Pai recalls the words of Retasu (Mew Lettuce), whose kindness had previously challenged his beliefs, and for the first time, he shows a genuine smile. This act redeems him, marking his transformation from a loyal enforcer into a selfless protector.
Powers
Among the alien trio, Pai is the most obedient and disciplined servant of Deep Blue, carrying out orders with precision and loyalty. He is considered second only to Deep Blue in terms of raw strength, and his tactical mind makes him one of the most dangerous opponents faced by the Mew Mews. While he, like Quiche and Tart, has the ability to create Chimera Animas, he does so less frequently, often preferring to rely on strategy and careful planning.
Pai possesses several natural abilities shared by his species, including flight, teleportation, underwater respiration, and spirit extraction. He is also highly intelligent, often seen using computers and carefully analyzing situations before acting.
His primary weapon is a large war fan, which allows him to manipulate wind, electricity, and ice. Though primarily used in direct combat, Pai can also enlarge the fan to create a defensive barrier capable of blocking enemy attacks. On rare occasions, he has been shown wielding two fans simultaneously, such as when he sacrificed himself to shield the Mew Mews from Deep Blue’s destructive beam.
