Pekora

Pekora (ペコラ, Pekora), is an archangel who has fallen from grace and found herself stranded on Earth. Once a celestial being with a halo, Pekora now finds herself in a tragic and ironic situation—unable to regain her place in Heaven, she is seen as a traitor by the divine for receiving charity from the mostly demonic characters that populate her current world. Reduced to a homeless state, Pekora survives through part-time jobs and the occasional kindness from those around her.

Her fall from grace and her struggle to find her place in a mortal world give her a unique perspective on both the celestial and earthly realms. Despite her fall from Heaven, Pekora retains her core goodness and kindness, even as she scrapes by in a world that seems indifferent to her existence. Her character explores themes of redemption, survival, and the search for meaning in a world that has turned its back on her.

Appearance in Anime

Pekora was once a proud archangel in Heaven, living a life full of divine purpose and light. However, her fall from grace came when she lost her halo, marking her as no longer fit to remain in the celestial realm. As a result, she was exiled to Earth, unable to return to Heaven due to the consequences of her perceived betrayal.

On Earth, Pekora struggles to find stability, rejected by Heaven and viewed as a traitor by the divine. She is forced to navigate a world that is largely indifferent to her celestial nature, relying on part-time gigs and the occasional kindness from mortals and demons alike to get by. Her situation is made worse by the fact that she is surrounded by a cast of mostly demonic characters, further isolating her and deepening her sense of displacement.

Though Pekora is technically homeless, she manages to scrape by, living day to day while trying to understand her new life on Earth. Her struggle is one of survival and self-discovery, as she grapples with her loss of identity and her attempt to redeem herself in a world that has turned its back on her.

Appearance

Pekora’s appearance reflects both her celestial origins and her current fallen state. As an archangel, she once possessed a radiant halo, which is now gone, symbolizing her fall from Heaven. Despite her fall, she still has angelic features, such as wings that are often described as tattered and broken, a stark contrast to the pristine wings of a true archangel.

Her clothing is often simple and unkempt, indicative of her homeless state. She typically wears ragged outfits, a far cry from her former celestial attire. Pekora’s face is soft and kind, and her eyes still carry a sense of compassion, though they also reflect the burden of her fall from grace.

Despite her current state, there is an ethereal quality to Pekora, a reminder of her true nature as an archangel. Her once-glowing appearance has faded, but remnants of her divine beauty still shine through, even in her darkest moments.

Personality

Pekora is inherently kind-hearted, compassionate, and gentle, despite her current circumstances. Even as a fallen archangel, she holds on to the virtues that once defined her in Heaven. She is humble and often struggles with feelings of worthlessness, as her exile has left her emotionally scarred. Pekora’s personality is defined by her resilience and her unyielding hope, even when faced with constant rejection and hardship.

Though she feels like an outsider in both the celestial and mortal realms, Pekora is always willing to help those around her. She maintains a positive attitude and does her best to stay kind-hearted, even when life has been cruel to her. This optimism is what allows her to survive in a world that has abandoned her, and it is the foundation of her character’s strength.

Pekora’s humility and willingness to accept help from others, even when she is regarded as a traitor, shows her capacity for selflessness. She continues to embody the ideals of an archangel, even when faced with the harshest of realities.

Role in the Story

From Heaven to Hardship: After falling from Heaven and losing her halo, Pekora arrives on Earth with no way to support herself. She tries to find shelter and food, often failing and ending up homeless. Her fall from divine status becomes a running gag in the series but also a source of sympathy.

Tensions with Demons: Pekora often clashes with Jashin-chan, who mocks her poverty and enjoys her misfortunes. Despite this, the two share a bizarre bond, and Pekora occasionally receives reluctant acts of kindness from her or other demons though often for comedic or self-serving reasons.

Attempts to Reclaim Dignity: Throughout the series, Pekora works various part-time jobs, such as at convenience stores or theme parks, in an effort to survive. These moments highlight both her resilience and the absurdity of her situation. She also continues to seek redemption or a way back to Heaven, although this goal seems increasingly distant.

Relationships

Jashin-chan: Her frenemy and main source of suffering. Jashin-chan alternates between bullying Pekora and occasionally helping her. Their dynamic is filled with comedic hostility and reluctant camaraderie.

Poporon: Another angel and former comrade who appears in the series. Their interactions reveal more about Heaven’s treatment of fallen angels and Pekora’s history.

Trivia

    • Pekora’s name is likely derived from the Japanese word “peko peko” (ぺこぺこ), which means “hungry” a reference to her constant state of starvation.
      • Despite being an angel, Pekora is physically weak and often ends up beaten or outmatched by the demons.
      • She’s known to eat anything, including expired or thrown-out food, to survive.
      • Her dynamic with Jashin-chan is often compared to a classic “comedy duo,” with Pekora as the straight man (tsukkomi) to Jashin’s antics (boke).
      • Even though she has no halo, she still tries to live like a proper angel, making her ongoing suffering both humorous and endearing.

    Legacy

      • Pekora stands out as one of the most ironically tragic yet heartwarming characters in Dropkick on My Devil!. Her fall from angelic grace and descent into poverty serve as both dark humor and quiet commentary on resilience, purity, and moral strength. Though constantly mistreated and surrounded by mischief, she never gives up on being good, making her one of the most endearing characters in the series.
        • Her character offers a contrast to the chaos and absurdity around her, and in doing so, elevates the show’s emotional depth. Pekora may not wield divine power anymore, but her integrity and kindness make her a true light in the show’s chaotic world.
