Ōno Akira

Akira Ōno (also spelled Oono Akira) is one of the main female characters in the anime and manga series Hi Score Girl. She is the quiet and enigmatic heir to the powerful Ōno Zaibatsu, a wealthy and influential family conglomerate. Despite her privileged background, Akira is best known for her exceptional skills in arcade gaming, where she earns respect and admiration from peers and rivals alike.

Appearance in Anime

Akira Ōno is portrayed as a beautiful and elegant young girl with long, dark purple hair in the anime (black in the manga), which falls to the top of her back. She has striking ruby-colored eyes that contribute to her mysterious and refined aura.

As a classic ojōsama, Akira consistently dresses in a sophisticated style throughout her elementary, middle, and high school years. She typically wears a purple dress with puffy sleeves, adorned with ruffles on the chest and a string bow at the neck. Her outfit is completed with dark purple stockings or leggings and brown buckle shoes. When outdoors, she often adds a yellow sweater over her dress.

Her graceful appearance, combined with her reserved demeanor, can be intimidating to those around her particularly during her middle and high school years though most people simply regard her as exceptionally attractive.

Personality

Akira Ōno is exceptionally talented, excelling in a wide range of activities, including academics, music, drawing, martial arts, and particularly video games. Despite her many abilities and intelligence, Akira is remarkably quiet and refrains from speaking. Instead, she communicates through subtle facial expressions, small gestures such as nodding or shaking her head, and soft vocalizations like “umm” to convey her thoughts and intentions.

As a daughter of a wealthy family, Akira generally displays refined manners befitting her upbringing. However, she has a charming quirk: she tends to make a “mogā” (モガー) sound when eating, which contrasts with her otherwise graceful attitude. Though gentle at heart, Akira occasionally resorts to playful or impulsive violence most often directed at Haruo Yaguchi whenever she feels angry, jealous, or frightened. Notably, she has a strong aversion to scary things, including horror movies and games.

Relationships

Haruo Yaguchi
Akira forms a close bond with Haruo through their shared passion for arcade games. Visiting game centers provides Akira with an escape from the overwhelming demands of her education at home, and Haruo becomes a companion who understands and shares her love for gaming. Haruo encourages Akira to run away from her pressures when they become too much, a gesture that earns her admiration.

As their friendship deepens, Akira develops romantic feelings for Haruo. This becomes particularly evident when she learns she must leave Japan; she seeks to spend meaningful time with him at an amusement park before her departure. When Haruo comes to see her off at the airport and gifts her a toy ring, Akira is moved to tears. Despite her desire to be with him, Haruo struggles with feelings of inferiority, believing himself unworthy of her.

Jīya
Jīya, Akira’s loyal personal driver, is one of the few figures in her household who genuinely cares about her emotional well-being. Tasked with retrieving Akira when she sneaks out to game centers, Jīya sympathizes with her desire for freedom and often allows her time to enjoy herself before bringing her home.

Moemi Gōda
Moemi Gōda, Akira’s strict tutor, enforces a demanding and rigid educational schedule, showing little regard for Akira’s personal feelings or happiness. She forbids Akira from engaging in ordinary childhood activities, such as owning a home console or socializing with friends. Gōda has stated that Akira’s future, including marriage, will be arranged according to the family’s plans once she graduates from university.

Makoto Ōno
Makoto, Akira’s older sister, cares deeply for her and seeks to support her happiness in subtle ways. Recognizing Akira’s connection to Haruo, Makoto playfully and gently tries to encourage a relationship between them, aware of how much time Akira spends with him.

Gaming

Akira Ōno is highly skilled across a wide range of arcade games, displaying exceptional natural talent despite not owning a game console at home. In fighting games, she favors powerful, grappling-type characters, such as Zangief and Edmond Honda, and is drawn to characters with abilities similar to Zangief’s cyclone moves.

Akira’s proficiency in gaming is notable in that she rarely requires practice to master new games or control schemes. Even when using a home console controller for the first time, she adapts quickly and handles it as if she has used it extensively. Her enthusiasm for gaming is broad, and she is willing to try virtually any genre except horror games, which she actively avoids due to her dislike of frightening content.

Etymology

Akira’s family name, Ōno (大野), translates to “big field.” Her given name, Akira (晶), means “crystal.” While Akira is a unisex name in Japan, it has historically been used more commonly for males, making it a slightly unusual choice for a girl, much like her elder sister’s name, Makoto, which also leans masculine in usage.

It has been speculated that her name may pay homage to real-life figures from the Street Fighter franchise: Ono Yoshinori, producer of Street Fighter, and Nishitani Akira, creator of Street Fighter EX.

Trivia
