Ōchi Fukuchi

Ōchi Fukuchi (福地 桜痴, Fukuchi Ōchi), formerly known as Gen’ichirō Fukuchi (福地 源一郎, Fukuchi Gen’ichirō), served as the captain of the Hunting Dogs special unit. Despite his outward role as a dedicated leader of the organization, he was secretly the mastermind behind the terrorist group known as the Decay of the Angel, operating under the alias Kamui (神威, Kamui). Fukuchi wielded a powerful ability known as Mirror Lion, which played a pivotal role in his dual life and operations.

Personality

Appearance in Manga

On the surface, Fukuchi presented himself as an eccentric and boastful individual. He took immense pride in the Hunting Dogs unit, often showcasing their skills and reputation with enthusiasm. He appeared to enjoy the thrill of “hunting down” criminals, adding a playful, albeit arrogant, flair to his leadership style. Fukuchi also exhibited a vulgar and shameless side, engaging in immature and crude behaviors, such as making inappropriate remarks, drinking excessively to the point of vomiting, and jokingly claiming his youthfulness by stating that his skin was “still peachy” on his backside. Despite these traits, Fukuchi demonstrated a charismatic and charming demeanor as a leader, capable of captivating and inspiring those around him. His presence left many in awe, with some describing the experience as dreamlike. He carried himself as a ‘protector,’ exuding the aura of a steadfast guardian.

However, Fukuchi’s true personality as Kamui, the leader of the Decay of the Angel, was far darker and more calculated than the persona he projected as captain of the Hunting Dogs. While Kamui retained some of Fukuchi’s laid-back nature, he exhibited bitterness about aging, openly expressing frustration over his thinning hair and using drinking as a means to relieve stress. He revealed a sense of relief at no longer needing to maintain his exhausting facade once the final stages of his plan were set into motion. As Kamui, Fukuchi was a ruthless and pragmatic soldier, unflinching in his resolve to achieve his goals. During his confrontation with Atsushi Nakajima, he demonstrated his merciless side, fully intent on eliminating his opponent. However, he retained a semblance of honor, offering Atsushi a fair chance to fight for survival and retrieve the Page.

Despite his dark persona as Kamui, Fukuchi took no personal satisfaction in the role. To him, it was merely another facade in service of his ultimate goal—preventing another war from occurring. His actions were driven by the traumatic experiences he endured during his time as a soldier, which deeply shaped his motivations. Fukuzawa, a former comrade, surmised that Fukuchi harbored resentment toward him for not standing as a brother-in-arms during the war. However, Fukuchi never truly hated Fukuzawa and continued to regard him as a friend. This sentiment was evident years later when Fukuchi attended the ceremony for the Armed Detective Agency, notably arriving as the first guest.

Appearance

Fukuchi is a tall, middle-aged man with a commanding presence, often dressed in the distinct uniform of the Hunting Dogs special unit. His uniform, army green in the manga and dark red in the anime, consisted of a standard military outfit, a long cape, and tall black boots, complemented by a military saber. Notably, he seldom wore the accompanying hat. He customized his uniform by rolling up his sleeves and wearing white half-palm gloves. Fukuchi’s physical features included light, spiky hair with two strands framing his face, an upward mustache, and a lightning bolt-shaped hairline on the left side of his forehead. His vibrant purple eyes, which appeared slightly wrinkled underneath, added to his sharp demeanor. He had a chiseled jawline with a square-like facial structure and bore three distinct healed scars resembling claw marks on his right cheek.

In his teenage years, Fukuchi wore traditional hakama and keikogi, the standard attire for kendo practitioners.

During the Great War, 14 years prior to the series, Fukuchi wore a standard military uniform similar to his Hunting Dogs attire. As before, he made alterations to the uniform by rolling up his sleeves and donning white half-palm gloves. At that time, he had shorter hair and lacked his signature mustache, giving him a slightly younger and cleaner-cut appearance.

After wielding the Holy Sword Soluz Levni and piercing it into Bram Stoker, a distinctive mark appeared on the back of Fukuchi’s hand. This mark symbolized his authority over Bram and granted him the ability to control Bram and other vampires to a certain extent.

Background

Fukuchi’s connection with Yukichi Fukuzawa dates back to their youth, where their relationship began under unusual circumstances—Fukuchi broke into Fukuzawa’s martial arts school. The two quickly became acquaintances and trained together at the same government-run school of martial arts. During this time, they also shared a mutual acquaintance, a woman named Kin. Fukuzawa, fondly referring to Fukuchi as Gen’ichirō (源一郎, Gen’ichirō), formed a bond of friendly rivalry with him, and the two became each other’s closest friends for many years.

Fourteen years prior to the current events, Fukuchi enlisted in the Japanese army to fight in the Great War, where he endured and committed unspeakable atrocities under government orders. These traumatic experiences included brutal combat, the torture and killing of soldiers and civilians, and the slaughter of women and children. The horrors he witnessed and inflicted led Fukuchi to believe that he was “born on the battlefield,” fostering a deep grudge against the nation and government for perpetuating such a hellish existence. Although he feigned resentment toward Fukuzawa for not joining him in the war, he cited this as the reason their paths diverged, though his bitterness ran much deeper.

Despite their apparent estrangement, Fukuchi attended the opening of the Armed Detective Agency 12 years ago. However, the event turned chaotic as he drank excessively, caused a scene, and even urinated on the Agency’s newly installed doorplate, much to Edogawa Ranpo’s disgust. Fukuzawa interpreted these shameful actions as an expression of grief and loneliness, believing Fukuchi felt left behind as Fukuzawa had seemingly found his life’s purpose. On that day, Fukuzawa confided in Ranpo, stating that he trusted Fukuchi more than anyone, a sentiment that shaped Ranpo’s perception of him. Unbeknownst to Fukuzawa, Fukuchi harbored deep bitterness and hidden hatred toward him, which would only grow over time.

Four years later, Fukuchi encountered Bram Stoker, defeating the vampire with the Holy Sword Soluz Levni. In their battle, Fukuchi severed Bram’s body from the torso down and gained control over him by embedding the Holy Sword into Bram. This act granted Fukuchi command over Bram’s ability and other vampires, symbolized by a mark etched onto his hand.

Over the years, Fukuchi rose to prominence as a hero, becoming captain of the Hunting Dogs and earning global recognition for his daring feats. His achievements included defeating Ability-based werewolf experiments, rescuing refugees, engaging in a grueling multi-day battle with a semi-immortal Ability user, and neutralizing vampire threats across Eastern Europe. Despite his heroic reputation, Fukuchi secretly assumed the alias Kamui, becoming the leader of the Decay of the Angel and orchestrating plans to achieve his ultimate goal.

Ability

Fukuchi’s ability, Mirror Lion (鏡獅子, Kagami Jishi), grants him the power to amplify the strength of any weapon he wields by 100-fold. This enhancement drastically increases the weapon’s speed, power, and overall effectiveness, making it an incredibly formidable ability in combat. Fukuchi demonstrated the devastating potential of Mirror Lion during his battle with Atsushi Nakajima, where he used his enhanced sword to sever Atsushi’s leg with tremendous speed and precision.

Skills

Fukuchi is an exceptionally skilled actor, capable of crafting a convincing facade to the point that even individuals with extraordinary observational abilities, such as Ranpo Edogawa, cannot discern his deceit or ulterior motives without fully utilizing their abilities, such as Ranpo’s Super Deduction. His talent for deception and infiltration earned him the nickname “The Man of a Hundred Faces” (百面相の男, Hyakumensō no Otoko) during his time in the army, where he became renowned for his legendary espionage abilities. However, Fukuchi has admitted that his skills have become somewhat rusty with age, though his abilities remain highly effective.

In addition to his espionage expertise, Fukuchi possesses remarkable physical prowess and is highly skilled in martial arts. Like Fukuzawa, he demonstrates proficiency in techniques such as kote gaeshi (小手返, lit. “forearm return”), an aikido maneuver that uses an opponent’s momentum to execute a throw. His mastery of such techniques, combined with his physical strength and extensive combat experience, makes him a formidable adversary in close-quarters combat.

Etymology

The name Ōchi (桜痴) combines the kanji for “cherry” (桜, ō) and “foolish” (痴, chi). His surname, Fukuchi (福地), translates to “good fortune” (福, fuku) and “ground” (地, chi). Fukuchi’s alias, Kamui (神威), carries the meaning “God’s Majesty,” derived from the kanji for “God” (神, kami/ka) and “majesty” or “authority” (威, i).

Trivia

Fukuchi’s historical inspiration, Ōchi Fukuchi, was a Meiji-era naval officer and writer, paralleling his fictional counterpart’s dual focus on leadership and subterfuge.

The name Kamui (神威) translates to “divine power” or “authority,” reflecting Fukuchi’s godlike vision for reshaping the world.

Fukuchi’s ability, Mirror Lion, references the Noh play Kagami Jishi, which explores themes of duality and transformation, aligning with his contrasting personas.

Despite his role as a villain, Fukuchi’s motivations are rooted in a desire to improve the world, albeit through extreme and destructive means, making him a morally ambiguous antagonist.
