Oboro (朧), is the princess of the Iga Tsubagakure clan and the granddaughter of Ogen, the previous leader. She is engaged to Gennosuke Kōga, the heir of the Kōga Manjidani clan, as part of an effort to bring peace between their warring clans. However, fate cruelly intervenes, and she is forced to fight against the man she loves when the Tokugawa shogunate reignites the feud between the Iga and Kōga.
Despite being one of the ten elite Iga ninja chosen by her grandmother to represent her clan, Oboro is not a warrior, nor does she share the hatred and bloodlust of her fellow Iga members. Instead, she is gentle, kind, and opposed to violence, which makes her ill-suited for the brutal conflict that unfolds. After Ogen’s death, Oboro is made leader of the Iga, but her passive nature and refusal to embrace war lead to her authority being usurped by Tenzen Yakushiji, who views her as a weak and ineffective ruler.
As the most tragic figure in Basilisk, Oboro is caught between love and duty, war and peace, forced to watch the people she cares for kill each other while she is powerless to stop it.
Background

Appearance in anime
Oboro was born into the prestigious Iga Tsubagakure clan, raised under the strict leadership of her grandmother, Ogen. Unlike most Iga warriors, who were trained from childhood to become ruthless assassins, Oboro was shielded from violence, growing up as a kind and gentle soul. This sheltered upbringing made her soft-hearted and naive, unprepared for the bloodshed and cruelty that defined the war between the Iga and Kōga clans.
Her engagement to Gennosuke Kōga was intended to end the long-standing conflict, symbolizing a new era of peace between their factions. However, this dream was shattered when the Tokugawa shogunate reinstated the Kōga-Iga war, forcing her to fight against the man she loves.
When her grandmother Ogen dies, Oboro is declared the new leader of the Iga, but her gentle nature prevents her from ruling effectively. Tenzen Yakushiji, a ruthless and power-hungry warrior, quickly seizes control of the clan, reducing Oboro to a mere figurehead. Though she remains loyal to her people, she is powerless to stop the violence, making her one of the most tragic victims of the renewed war.
Appearance
Oboro is a delicate and beautiful young woman, with long, flowing black hair, large expressive eyes, and a graceful, elegant demeanor. Her soft facial features and gentle expressions highlight her kind-hearted nature, making her stand out from the hardened warriors around her.
She typically wears a traditional white kimono with light blue or purple accents, emphasizing her noble status as the princess of the Iga clan. Unlike the warriors of her clan, who are often scarred and battle-worn, Oboro maintains a pure and untainted appearance, reflecting her innocence and aversion to violence.
Personality
Oboro is gentle, kind, and deeply compassionate, making her an anomaly among the ruthless and battle-hardened Iga ninja. She abhors violence, believing that hatred and revenge only lead to more suffering. Unlike her comrades, who embrace the blood feud with the Kōga, Oboro desperately wishes for peace, seeing no purpose in the endless cycle of revenge.
She is also deeply loyal and self-sacrificing, always putting the well-being of others above herself. This is particularly evident in her love for Gennosuke, as she struggles to reconcile her feelings with her duty to her clan. Despite being thrust into a war she never wanted, she never succumbs to hatred, proving that her heart remains pure even in the darkest times.
However, her passivity and lack of assertiveness make her ill-suited for leadership, leading to her authority being stripped away by Tenzen Yakushiji. Though she desires to protect her people, she is too gentle to command them, making her a tragic figure who is unable to stop the war she despises.
