Appearance
Norman’s full appearance.
Norman is a young boy with short, neatly styled white hair (originally platinum blonde in the early parts of the manga), parted to his left, with a longer piece on the side that curves upwards, giving him a distinctive “horn-like” look. His sharp, inward-tilting blue eyes and thick eyebrows are his most noticeable features. At Grace Field House, he typically wears the standard orphanage uniform: a white button-up shirt with long sleeves, white pants, and brown boots. His identification number “22194” is tattooed on the left side of his neck.
During his time at Λ7214, Norman’s outfit consisted of a white long-sleeved shirt with ruffles on the chest, layered under a white v-neck sweater vest, white pants, and black shoes. He also bears a tattoo from the facility on his chest, surrounded by bruises from the brutal conditions there.
By the year 2047, at age thirteen, Norman has become the tallest of the trio, standing around 170 cm. His appearance has matured; his hair has grown longer and is now a bit untidy, echoing the look of the late William Minerva. Outside of the Paradise Hideout, he is often seen wearing a short hooded cape with lace-trimmed edges and a distinctive pattern of three diamond-shaped designs on the back, likely gifted by Smee. Inside the hideout, Norman’s attire is more formal, consisting of a white button-up shirt, a light blue waistcoat, matching light blue pants, and black dress shoes.
Personality
Norman is a calm, composed, and kind-hearted boy who tries to appear as though he has everything under control, wanting to be seen as dependable by those around him. However, beneath this exterior, his morality is more complex. While he enjoys playing games like tag and hide-and-seek with his siblings, the revelation of the orphanage’s dark secrets causes a shift in his outlook. He becomes more pragmatic, akin to Ray, initially believing that only a small group should be included in the escape. This self-awareness leads Norman to view himself as selfish, especially compared to Emma, who prioritizes others’ well-being above her own. Emma’s idealism inspires Norman to embrace her vision of saving everyone, even if it seems impossible.
Despite his kind nature, Norman is a realist and willing to make ruthless decisions when necessary. He has shown himself to be extremely rational, even agreeing to Ray’s plans to eliminate Krone and Isabella to secure their escape.
Norman is the smartest child at Grace Field House, consistently achieving perfect scores in daily tests. His intelligence extends beyond academics—he’s strategic and analytical, able to anticipate and plan for any scenario. He exudes self-confidence, believing that if he plays his cards right, he can always achieve his goals. However, this confidence can turn into intense self-imposed pressure. When mistakes happen, Norman takes all the blame upon himself, haunted by the thought that there was always a perfect solution he should have seen.
His loyalty to his family is fierce. He hides his true fears and worries to maintain a calm and reassuring front. Even when faced with his impending “shipment,” Norman prioritizes comforting Emma, despite his own life being in danger. His willingness to sacrifice himself is part of his strong-willed nature—he is willing to disregard his own well-being for the greater good.
However, his time at Λ7214 took a severe toll on his mental state. Isolated from his friends and subjected to cruel experiments, Norman became increasingly fearful of demons and the unknowns of the human world. This led him to adopt a cold, calculating persona, embodying the role of “William Minerva.” As a leader, he presented himself as someone strong and dependable, although this caused him to neglect his own needs and happiness.
By the time he starts running the Paradise Hideout, Norman’s personality shifts dramatically. The cheerful, optimistic boy has given way to someone far more serious and withdrawn, convinced that only extreme measures will ensure the safety of his loved ones. His belief in the necessity of killing all demons reflects this hardened worldview. While his intentions remain rooted in protecting his family, he becomes more isolated, pushing away others and choosing not to rely on anyone else for help.
Eventually, Norman confronts his own fears and acknowledges that his extreme actions stemmed from his fear of making mistakes and losing those he loves. Emma and Ray’s support helps him realize that he doesn’t have to bear these burdens alone. Accepting their help allows him to return to his former self, rekindling his desire for a peaceful solution and allowing him to embrace vulnerability, friendship, and the possibility of living on for himself and those he loves. He also begins to recognize the harm his actions have caused and vows to atone for his mistakes.
History
Norman was born on March 21, 2034, at Grace Field, and a year later, in 2035, he was placed in Plantation 3. From a young age, he struggled with his health, frequently falling ill due to his weak physique. Most of his ailments were common colds, which he caught particularly during winters or heavy rainstorms.
Despite these health challenges, Norman had a happy and fulfilling childhood under the care of Isabella, the “Mama” of Grace Field, and surrounded by his foster siblings. Among all the children, Norman developed a special bond with Emma and Ray, likely due to their similar ages and shared status as the top students. The trio was inseparable, often spending time together and sharing a deeper friendship than with the other orphans.
In January 2039, during a winter snowball fight, Norman fainted from the cold and was confined to the orphanage’s infirmary. Emma, concerned for her friend, made repeated attempts to sneak into the infirmary to be with him, but Isabella, worried about the potential spread of illness, consistently caught her and prevented her from staying by his side. However, Emma, undeterred, devised a creative solution—using a tin-can telephone, she and the other children were able to communicate with Norman and keep him company despite his isolation. This gesture highlighted their close-knit friendship and the care they had for each other.
Later, in November 2039, Norman and Emma managed to convince Ray to take a break from reading and join them on an adventure to explore the gates surrounding Grace Field House. Together, the trio pondered what lay beyond the towering walls. Curious, Norman even grabbed the large gate, wondering why it never opened and speculating that it might be keeping something out. They recalled Isabella’s stern warnings to never venture beyond the gate or the fences, as danger lurked outside. Despite his growing doubts about the truth behind their “mother’s” warnings, the three returned to the orphanage, their curiosity piqued but their bond strengthened.
