Did You Know?

Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Nona

Nona (ノーナ, Nōna) is the manager of the arbiter system in the anime Death Parade. She oversees the various arbiters assigned to judge souls, including Decim, Ginti, and others. Nona resides in the Nona Ginta, a higher-level floor within the afterlife facility, from where she supervises and manages the operations of the judgment system.

Although she holds a position of authority, Nona often displays a laid-back and casual attitude, contrasting with the rigid, emotionless behavior expected of arbiters. Beneath her relaxed demeanor, however, she is deeply observant and strategic, with a strong interest in evolving the system to better reflect human complexity. Her character plays a vital role in the overarching themes of the series, particularly the exploration of whether true judgment can exist without emotion.

Appearance in Anime

Nona is a petite woman with pale skin and a youthful appearance that belies her authority as the manager of the arbiters. She has aqua blue hair, which is styled into a braid and secured with a sky blue ornament. Her striking purple eyes bear the distinctive arbiter cross, signifying her identity as a non-human being. Her fingernails are painted the same aqua blue as her hair, adding to her vibrant and coordinated look.

Nona’s outfit is both stylish and unconventional. She wears a white buttoned top with puffy sleeves, paired with black high-waisted harem pants that are attached to oversized black suspenders, giving her a unique silhouette. Her accessories include golden earrings, a red ribbon at her collar fastened with a decorative pin, bracelets, and a pair of violet sandals. Her fashion-forward appearance, combined with her bold color palette, sets her apart from the more formally dressed arbiters and reflects her free-spirited personality.

Personality

Despite her youthful appearance, Nona is a highly intelligent, calculating, and experienced figure within the arbiter system. As the manager overseeing the judgment of souls, she carries a deep understanding of both the strengths and limitations of the arbiters under her supervision. While she is capable of being harsh and authoritative when necessary especially when arbiters like Decim or Ginti deviate from expectations she is not needlessly cruel. Her critiques are usually driven by a desire to see improvement and evolution in the system.

Beneath her position of authority, Nona is often portrayed as friendly, approachable, and even lighthearted, occasionally displaying a playful or teasing attitude. She treats others with respect, regardless of their rank, and encourages individuality and emotional insight, particularly in Decim’s case. Her willingness to challenge the rigid norms of the arbiter system and experiment with emotion-based judgment reveals her belief that there may be more to justice than mechanical observation.

Nona’s personality embodies a balance of leadership and empathy, making her one of the few figures in the series who actively questions and seeks to improve the afterlife’s judgment system.

Plot

As the manager of the arbiters, Nona oversees the judgment process but is primarily focused on a personal experiment intended to challenge and possibly improve the current system used to evaluate human souls. Believing that emotions are essential to truly understanding and judging humans, she secretly implants emotions into Decim, an otherwise emotionless arbiter.

To push the experiment forward, Nona assigns the black-haired woman (Chiyuki) as Decim’s assistant, hoping that her human perspective will influence and accelerate his emotional development. To test the progress of the experiment, she collaborates with Quin and Ginti, the latter of whom is temporarily disguised as a human participant in one of Decim’s games. However, when Decim fails to properly respond to the scenario and a confrontation escalates, Nona is forced to intervene and halt the conflict herself.

Disappointed but still determined, she then speaks with Castra, convincing her to send two marked human souls known murderers typically judged only by the most experienced arbiters to Decim. She does this to push him further, believing that true growth can only come when he faces extreme cases of moral ambiguity.

Meanwhile, Nona must keep her actions hidden from Oculus, the god-like overseer of the entire system, who believes arbiters should remain purely objective and emotionless. When confronted by Oculus, Nona casually dismisses his inquiries, but he eventually grows suspicious and reads Clavis’ memories, uncovering details of her experiment. Unable to read Nona’s own memories, Oculus confronts her directly. Despite their differing philosophies, Nona stands her ground and refuses to back down from her belief in the value of emotion.

However, with the experiment now exposed, she steps back from active interference and chooses to simply observe Decim from afar, trusting him to make the final judgment on Chiyuki but on his own terms, not by the rules of the system.

Abilities

Strength
Despite her petite frame and youthful appearance, Nona possesses remarkable physical strength and combat skills. She is shown to be capable of easily overpowering Ginti, a physically imposing and aggressive arbiter, knocking him down with minimal effort. Her reflexes and agility are also notable—she effortlessly dodges an attack from Oculus’ flower, further demonstrating her superior abilities and experience.

Sleep Inducement
Nona has the ability to induce sleep in others with a touch, and can awaken them in the same manner. When she uses this power, her bracelets emit a soft glow, indicating the activation of the ability. This technique allows her to peacefully subdue others without violence, making it useful in moments when direct confrontation is unnecessary or disruptive.

These abilities reinforce her position not only as a leader but also as a capable and authoritative figure within the arbiter system, respected and feared by both her peers and superiors.

Relationships

Decim
Nona handpicked Decim as the subject of her experimental attempt to evolve the arbiter system, implanting him with human emotions, a trait normally forbidden for arbiters. Though she is often frustrated by his mistakes or his inability to act decisively, she also respects his sincerity and insight. After he failed Quin’s staged test, Nona expressed clear disappointment and sternly reprimanded him, but her continued support shows that she believes in his potential to grow beyond the system’s limitations.

Oculus
On the surface, Nona and Oculus appear to have a lighthearted, easygoing relationship, frequently playing billiards together and exchanging casual remarks. In reality, their relationship is marked by philosophical tension, as they hold conflicting views on the nature of arbiters and how the dead should be judged. While Nona seeks to challenge and humanize the system, Oculus firmly believes in emotional detachment and tradition, putting them quietly at odds throughout the series.

Quin
Nona and Quin share a close friendship, often relaxing with drinks at the Nona Ginta after work. Though Nona occasionally grows annoyed by Quin’s loud and talkative personality, she enjoys her company and trusts her deeply, even going as far as to confide in her about Decim’s emotional implant. Quin, in turn, supports Nona by running errands and offering advice, serving as both a friend and a reliable ally.

Ginti
Nona has little patience for Ginti’s aggressive and impulsive behavior, frequently scolding or physically reprimanding him when he steps out of line. While she acknowledges his ability as an arbiter, she does not tolerate his antics and enforces discipline without hesitation when he acts inappropriately especially toward guests or other staff.

Clavis
Nona maintains a friendly and trusting relationship with Clavis, the elevator operator. While she sometimes chastises him for being late, their conversations are typically casual and respectful. She even entrusts him with sensitive information, such as the nature of her experiment with Decim, showing that she views him as a reliable confidant within the system.

Trivia

    • Nona’s name is derived from the first part of “Nona Ginta,” the name of the floor she resides on. In Latin, “Nona” means “nine,” and “Nona Ginta” is a reference to “ninety.”
    • It is unclear whether Nona has ever judged souls herself, as she primarily functions as the manager of the arbiters rather than an active participant in the judgment process.
    • In the opening sequence of Death Parade, Nona is shown wearing a red dress, a look that never appears in the actual episodes. This may have been a stylistic choice for the animation or an allusion to her hidden depth and presence within the story.
