Noir Stardia

Noir Stardia (ノル, Noru) is the main protagonist of the light novel, manga, and anime series Ore Dake Haireru Kakushi Dungeon. He is the third son of a minor noble family, often referred to disparagingly as a “beggar noble” due to their low status and limited wealth. A graduate of Jastal Preparatory School, Noir initially struggled to find his place in society. After unexpectedly losing his job, he considered pursuing the life of an adventurer, a decision that set the stage for a series of events that would dramatically change his fortunes.

Appearance in Anime

Born as the third son of a baronet, a rank regarded as the lowest among the nobility Noir grew up facing prejudice and social disdain, with families like his often mocked as “noble beggars.” After graduating, he secured a position as a librarian, only to lose it to a viscount, a move intended to spare his family and younger sister further humiliation. Determined to improve his standing, Noir resolved to pass the entrance exam for the prestigious Hero Academy.

Seeking a way to strengthen himself, he turned to his unique ability, the Great Sage (GS) skill, for guidance. The skill advised him to explore the Hidden Dungeon, also known as the Unending Dungeon, even providing him with the exact location and method of entry. With this knowledge, Noir set out toward the mysterious dungeon, marking the beginning of his journey.

Appearance

Noir is depicted with short brown hair, black eyes, and a fair complexion. His typical attire consists of a white shirt beneath a dark green jacket, paired with dark brown trousers and sturdy brown boots. He also wears gloves and carries a sword sheathed at his hip, reflecting his role as an adventurer.

Personality

Noir is generally portrayed as a kind and well-mannered young man, often serious but occasionally displaying a sharp wit or pointed remarks. Due to his status as a baronet and his unassuming appearance, he is frequently underestimated or dismissed by others, particularly students of the Hero Academy and many of his male peers.

By his own admission, Noir is both cautious and timid, with a degree of naivety that sometimes influences his decisions. Despite possessing a healthy romantic interest typical for his age, he refrains from inappropriate behavior such as deliberately peeping or groping, setting him apart from more lecherous characters in the series.

Relationships

Alice Stardia
Alice is Noir’s younger sister, with whom he shares a close and affectionate bond. She harbors strong romantic and physical feelings for him, often staying close to him when they are at home. While Noir generally rejects her advances, he does show signs of attraction toward her, as evidenced by the increase in his LP when interacting with her. His determination to grow stronger is partly motivated by his desire to protect Alice and the rest of his family without relying on her support. Alice, in turn, is deeply concerned for Noir’s safety and dislikes seeing him take unnecessary risks.

Gillan Stardia
Gillan, Noir’s elder brother, is a flamboyant and carefree individual whose playboy lifestyle Noir does not approve of, though he tolerates it. Despite their differences, Gillan holds no animosity toward Noir and often encourages him to loosen up. Initially viewing himself as superior due to his higher level and swordsmanship skills, Gillan’s opinion changed after witnessing Noir’s rapid growth. Noir risked his life to rescue Gillan from Oohora Gaien and the Tonell villagers, prompting Gillan to give up his reckless lifestyle and take training more seriously.

Emma Brightness
Emma is the daughter of a baroness, Noir’s childhood friend, and later his girlfriend. She helps relieve the headaches he experiences when using the Great Sage skill, initially treating their kisses as casual gestures before both began to see them in a more intimate light. Although Emma accepts that Noir’s survival depends on maintaining a harem, she insists on being his top priority. She begins training to match Noir’s growing strength, and he is highly protective of her, intervening whenever other men show her unwanted attention. Noir values Emma deeply, considering her irreplaceable.

Lola Metrose
Lola is a receptionist at the adventurer’s guild Odin and manages Noir’s quest assignments. In exchange for his loyalty as her exclusive adventurer, she offers affectionate gestures as bonuses alongside standard rewards. While she is a skilled and powerful individual in her own right, Lola prefers supporting Noir and harbors hopes of becoming his wife.

Luna Heela
Noir meets Luna through Lola’s introduction. After he modifies her Lift Curse skill to prevent it from shortening her lifespan, Luna develops romantic feelings for him. She accompanies him on quests and expresses a desire to become his partner and even offers to serve as his “slave” with the goal of surpassing Emma in his affections.

Olivia Servant
A legendary adventurer from 200 years ago, Olivia became trapped in a labyrinth due to a curse after discovering the Hidden Dungeon. She becomes Noir’s master, training him so he might one day free her. Olivia chose him as her apprentice because he reminded her of a boy she once knew who was killed by an Iron Goblin. Over time, she also develops romantic feelings for him.

Maria Fianna Albert
Maria, a fellow student at the Hero Academy, first observed Noir from a distance at the adventurer’s guild and was impressed by his sincerity. After he saved her life, she developed strong romantic feelings for him, though she initially denied them. Following a kiss, she became openly affectionate toward him. Noir engages in discreet romantic encounters with Maria, enjoying the secrecy of their relationship.

Leila Overlock
Leila, a member of a rival adventurer’s guild, is regarded by Noir as the most level-headed of his companions. They first met when he saved her brother, an act for which she was grateful. She later trained him in hand-to-hand combat, during which they developed mutual respect. While she harbors feelings for Noir, Leila often supports his relationship with Emma despite her own emotions. She has declined Noir’s invitations to join Odin, fearing it would brand her a traitor within her own guild.

Etymology

The given name Noir is derived from the French word for “black,” possibly reflecting aspects of his character or the mysterious nature of his adventures in the Hidden Dungeon. His surname, Stardia, does not have a confirmed origin but may be interpreted as a compound of “star” and “dia” (potentially from “diamond”), evoking imagery of brilliance or value despite his low social standing. In the original Japanese, his name is written as ノル (Noru), which is a phonetic rendering without an inherent meaning in kanji.

Trivia

    • In every instance where Noir glimpses the underwear of his female companions, they are depicted as pure white, symbolizing the sincerity of their affection toward him.
      • The name “Noir Stardia” may be a play on the word nostalgia, possibly alluding to his mentor Olivia’s memories of the past.
