Nine (ナイン, Nain), is one of the two main protagonists of Terror in Resonance (Zankyou no Terror). Alongside his childhood friend Twelve, he is a mastermind behind the terrorist group Sphinx, orchestrating elaborate attacks that challenge both the authorities and society itself. Cool-headed, intelligent, and highly calculated, Nine carries a deep sense of pain and trauma from his past, which fuels his actions against the government. His enigmatic presence and strategic brilliance make him one of the most intriguing characters in the series.
Background

Appearance in anime
Nine was one of the children abducted by the government to be subjected to Project Athena, an illegal human experimentation program that aimed to enhance intelligence at the cost of emotional and physical well-being. Along with Twelve and several other children, he was raised under harsh conditions, treated as nothing more than a test subject for the sake of scientific advancement.
However, the brutality of the experiments led to horrific consequences. Many children did not survive, and those who did were severely damaged, both physically and psychologically. Nine and Twelve were among the few who managed to escape the facility, though Nine continued to suffer from traumatic flashbacks and psychological distress.
After escaping, Nine and Twelve went into hiding, developing their own vendetta against the government for its crimes against children. This led to the formation of Sphinx, their symbolic rebellion against the system, using calculated terrorist attacks to expose the corruption and hidden atrocities committed by those in power.
Appearance
Nine is a tall and slender young man with fair skin, sharp facial features, and dark gray eyes. His most distinguishing feature is his short, slightly messy black hair, which often falls over his face. His stoic and composed demeanor adds to his mysterious presence.
His clothing style is simple and practical, often seen wearing a white dress shirt, black tie, and glasses, giving him the appearance of an intellectual strategist rather than a traditional terrorist. He also wears a navy blue school uniform while blending into society during investigations. His cold and calculating gaze is a reflection of his detached and emotionally guarded nature.
Personality
Nine is highly intelligent, methodical, and emotionally reserved. He rarely expresses strong emotions, maintaining a calm and composed demeanor even in tense situations. His analytical mind allows him to plan complex terrorist attacks with remarkable precision, always staying one step ahead of the authorities.
However, beneath his stoic exterior, Nine carries deep emotional scars from his past. He suffers from PTSD and traumatic hallucinations, particularly triggered by memories of the experiments in Project Athena. This trauma fuels his hatred for the government, motivating him to seek justice for the children who suffered and died in captivity.
Despite his apparent coldness, Nine cares deeply for Twelve, the only person who truly understands him. He often acts as the mature and responsible half of their duo, keeping Twelve’s reckless tendencies in check. Though he may seem distant and detached, Nine’s actions reveal his protective and compassionate nature, particularly when it comes to Twelve and Lisa Mishima.
Role in the Story
-
Founding Sphinx
Nine and Twelve create Sphinx, an anonymous terrorist group, to execute a series of calculated bombings. Their goal is not mass destruction, but rather to send a message—exposing the government’s secret crimes while challenging the police and the world to uncover the truth. Using a combination of puzzles, riddles, and cryptic videos, Nine orchestrates a psychological war against the authorities, particularly against Detective Shibazaki, who becomes obsessed with solving their enigmatic riddles. -
The War Against the System
As the police investigation intensifies, Nine takes on a more direct role, hacking into government databases and uncovering hidden files on Project Athena. However, their actions attract the attention of Five, a fellow survivor of the experiments who now works for the U.S. government. Nine and Five engage in a battle of wits, with Nine desperately trying to outmaneuver her while protecting Twelve and Lisa. However, as Five’s pursuit escalates, Nine is forced to confront his past and the consequences of his actions. -
The Final Stand
In the climax of the series, Nine reveals the truth behind Project Athena to the world, exposing the government’s inhumane experiments. However, by this point, he is suffering from severe health deterioration, a delayed side effect of the experiments. Despite his declining health, Nine achieves his mission, ensuring that the world acknowledges the suffering of the forgotten children. However, in a tragic turn, he is ultimately captured and executed by the Japanese authorities, making the ultimate sacrifice for his cause.
Relationships
Twelve (Childhood Friend and Comrade)
Twelve is Nine’s closest companion, the only person who truly understands him. While Nine is reserved and serious, Twelve is playful and spontaneous, creating a perfect balance between the two. Despite their contrasting personalities, they share an unbreakable bond, forged through their shared trauma and mutual trust. Nine often acts as the voice of reason, keeping Twelve’s reckless behavior in check. However, when Twelve becomes emotionally compromised, Nine struggles to understand or express his own emotions, leading to moments of tension between them. Despite this, Nine deeply cares for Twelve, showing genuine concern for his safety and well-being. In the end, they fight together until the very last moment, standing as brothers in arms against the system that wronged them.
Lisa Mishima (Distant but Protective Figure)
Lisa is a lonely and abused girl who is drawn into Sphinx’s world. Though Twelve is immediately kind and protective of her, Nine is more wary and distant, seeing her as a liability. However, as the story progresses, Nine begins to soften toward Lisa, recognizing that she, too, is a victim of society’s cruelty. Although he remains emotionally detached, Nine ultimately accepts Lisa as part of their mission, even trusting her to help them in their final stand. His quiet acceptance and reluctant care for her highlight his hidden compassion.
Shibazaki (Rival and Investigator)
Detective Shibazaki is the only person capable of keeping up with Nine’s intelligence. Throughout the series, they engage in a mental chess match, with Shibazaki attempting to unravel Sphinx’s riddles. Despite being on opposite sides, Nine respects Shibazaki’s determination and intelligence. He recognizes that Shibazaki, unlike the corrupt government officials, genuinely seeks the truth. In the end, Nine entrusts the final message of their mission to Shibazaki, ensuring that the truth will not die with them.
