Niaes Varge

Niaes Varge (ニアエス・バージ, Niaesu Bāji), more commonly known by her alias Black Maiden (ブラックメイデン, Burakku Meiden), is a central figure in the Shaman King Flowers manga and anime series. She is a member of Team YVS, a group with significant influence during the Flower of Maize tournament. Niaes’s stoic demeanor and mysterious past set her apart, adding intrigue to her role in the series. Her participation in the Flower of Maize highlights her exceptional abilities as a shaman, as well as her determination to achieve her goals.

Niaes’s connection to Tao Jeanne, who serves as her Guardian Ghost, plays a critical role in her development and her journey throughout the story. The relationship between the two, as well as Niaes’s actions during the tournament, sheds light on her complexities as a character. Her alias, “Black Maiden,” reflects her unique persona and the dark yet captivating aura she brings to the series.

Appearance in Manga

Niaes is a petite young woman distinguished by her long black hair, which frames her face delicately, and freckles that stretch across her nose, adding a youthful charm to her appearance. A unique detail of her look is the braces on her teeth, which subtly emphasize her innocence and vulnerability despite her sharp demeanor.

Her outfit consists of a pink blouse short-sleeved in Shaman King Flowers and long-sleeved in The Super Star adorned with a black ribbon tied into a neat bow under the collar. Personality

Niaes is a determined and ambitious individual with a singular goal: to become the ultimate maiden. She believes this can be achieved by acquiring the spirit of Iron Maiden Jeanne and her powerful Guardian Ghost, Shamash, which is currently under the control of Jeanne’s son, Tao Men. This aspiration drives her actions throughout the Flower of Maize, showcasing her relentless pursuit of power and self-actualization.

Despite her maidenly ambitions, Niaes’ demeanor contrasts sharply with the traditional image of a pure and refined maiden. She frequently uses slang and displays a sharp tongue, often referring to others with derogatory terms, such as calling Tamamura Tamao and the Hana-Gumi Waitresses “hags” (ババア babā). Her disdain extends to the Lasso Family, whom she blames for manipulating the world under the guise of generosity. Her hatred is particularly directed toward Spimea Lasso, who uses Niaes’ parents as leverage to force her participation in Team YVS. This resentment fuels her resolve to eventually kill Spimea after achieving her objectives.

History

Niaes was recruited into Team YVS and brought into the conflict surrounding Tao Jeanne by Red Crimson. In exchange for becoming stronger, she was tasked with assassinating Jeanne. When Jeanne pleaded for her life and urged Niaes not to kill anyone, Niaes hesitated. To prevent Niaes from becoming a murderer, Jeanne used Shamash to impose a death sentence on herself. However, Kamogawa Yohsuke stopped time using one of his YVS Cards and shot Jeanne himself, ensuring that the bullet would kill Jeanne before Shamash could. Yohsuke later implanted a false memory into Niaes, making her believe she had pulled the trigger herself.

Following this, Niaes accompanied Asakura Muntzer Redseb and Seyrarm to Funbari Onsen, where she aimed to kill Tao Men and claim Shamash. Despite severely injuring Men during an attack, she was forced to stop when the Muntzer siblings pointed out that the Hana-Gumi Waitresses would retaliate. The confrontation was interrupted by Tamamura Tamao, who diffused the situation and invited Team YVS members for tea. Niaes remained outside as discussions about a truce took place. Later, she traveled with Yohsuke to investigate Sakurai Sakutaro’s past and explore connections to the Lasso family, whose manipulation and actions Niaes deeply resented. Over time, her journey with Yohsuke and Honhon involved several conflicts, including fights against ghosts and other shamans, as well as struggles within her team due to internal tensions and her growing irritation with their mission’s constant challenges.

Powers and Abilities

Niaes’s Guardian Ghost is Tao Jeanne, the former leader of the X-Laws and a renowned shaman from the Shaman Fight in Tokyo 2000. After Jeanne was killed by Yohsuke, Niaes acquired Jeanne’s spirit and now wields her as a Guardian Ghost. Niaes uses the faceplate of Jeanne’s Iron Maiden as a medium for her Over Soul, channeling Jeanne’s immense power and spiritual abilities.

Through Jeanne’s spirit, Niaes can create powerful Over Souls, which reflect Jeanne’s justice-driven nature and lethal efficiency. This allows Niaes to unleash devastating attacks with precision and overwhelming force. Niaes also benefits from Jeanne’s deep well of spiritual energy, making her Over Soul significantly more potent in battle. By mastering the abilities of Tao Jeanne and her Guardian Ghost, Niaes proves to be a formidable opponent in the Flower of Maize.

Tao Jeanne
