Nerine (ネリネ, Nerine) is one of the main heroines of the Shuffle! series, a Japanese visual novel developed by Navel that was later adapted into manga and anime. She is the daughter of the King of the Devils, Forbesii, and his wife, Sage. Like Lisianthus, the daughter of the King of the Gods, Nerine comes to the Human World after her childhood memories with Rin Tsuchimi, the protagonist, draw her back to him. She attends Verbena Academy and is placed in the same homeroom as Rin, where her calm demeanor and reserved personality contrast with the other girls vying for his affection.
Background

Nerine’s Appearance in Anime
Nerine is the only daughter of the Demon King Forbesii and his wife, Sage, and is also the cousin of Lisianthus (Sia). Like Sia, she moves to the Human World with her father, drawn by her past memories of Rin Tsuchimi, and resides in a house built next to Kaede Fuyou’s.
Physically, Nerine is described as a red-eyed girl with waist-length blue hair and a petite frame, though she is noted for having unusually large breasts, a trait attributed to her lineage from the House of the Demon King. This feature is frequently remarked upon by other characters, including her mother Sage, who expresses jealousy over it. Despite receiving numerous marriage proposals from nobles, Nerine rejected all of them before coming to the Human World.
Her domestic abilities are limited, with the exception of sewing, and she is known for being able to cook only omelets well. In contrast, Nerine excels academically and possesses extraordinary magical power, with the capacity to level entire city blocks. These strengths and weaknesses are presented as the inverse of Sia’s.
Nerine’s past is closely tied to Lycoris, her near-identical clone distinguished only by purple eyes. As a child, Nerine suffered from an incurable illness, and Lycoris sacrificed her own life to save her. Because of this, Nerine absorbed Lycoris’s spirit, emotions, and singing voice, known as the “Angel’s Bell.” Unlike Sia, however, Nerine did not develop multiple personalities but instead struggles with guilt, believing she has stolen everything from Lycoris. This guilt leads her to hate singing, despite inheriting Lycoris’s voice.
Initially, Nerine is disheartened by Rin’s closeness with Sia. After confessing both her love for Rin and the truth about Lycoris, she falls into despair and considers ending her life. Rin intervenes, challenging her to a game: if he can reach her by five o’clock the next day, she must go on living. When he succeeds, he reassures her that Lycoris’s wish was for Nerine to live, sing, and smile as herself, rather than as a vessel for Lycoris’s memory.
Appearance
Nerine is portrayed as a petite young woman with long, waist-length blue hair and striking red eyes, features that distinguish her as a member of the Demon race. Her delicate facial features and calm expression give her a graceful, almost ethereal appearance. Despite her modest stature, Nerine is noted for her voluptuous figure particularly her large bust which is attributed to her demonic lineage from the royal house of the Demon King. This trait often draws attention and even jealousy from other female characters, including her mother, Sage.
Her standard attire consists of the Verbena Academy school uniform, featuring a brown dress with white trim, a yellow ribbon, and a pleated skirt. Outside of school, she is occasionally seen wearing elegant dresses or casual outfits that emphasize her reserved and refined personality. Nerine’s overall appearance, combined with her gentle demeanor and quiet presence, reinforces her image as the most traditionally graceful among the Shuffle! heroines.
Personality
Nerine is depicted as a calm and reserved individual with a gentle and courteous demeanor. She consistently speaks in a polite manner and often appears composed in contrast to the more expressive personalities around her. Despite her quiet nature, Nerine possesses a strong sense of conviction and can become frighteningly intense when provoked particularly when someone insults or threatens Rin Tsuchimi. In such moments, she demonstrates her formidable magical power without hesitation, once releasing an attack so destructive that it caused the school gymnasium to disappear.
Though respectful toward her father, the Demon King Forbesii, Nerine occasionally reprimands him when he behaves foolishly or causes her embarrassment, revealing a sharper, more assertive side to her personality. Beneath her calm exterior lies both emotional strength and deep sensitivity, traits that reflect her struggles with guilt over Lycoris’s sacrifice and her desire to live up to the expectations placed upon her.
Relationships
Rin Tsuchimi
Rin is Nerine’s primary love interest. Her affection for him began after Lycoris, her clone, spoke fondly of Rin during her time in the Human World. Upon meeting him herself, Nerine gradually developed her own feelings, which deepened as she came to know his kindness and sincerity.
Lisianthus (Sia)
Lisianthus is Nerine’s cousin and romantic rival for Rin’s affection. Despite competing for the same person, the two share a genuine friendship and often spend time together when they are not with Rin. Their relationship reflects mutual respect and familial closeness rather than hostility.
Forbesii (King of the Devils)
Forbesii, the Demon King, is Nerine’s father. Although she respects him, his tendency to act foolishly or embarrass her in public frustrates her. As a form of mild punishment or protest, Nerine frequently addresses him as “Devil King” instead of “Father,” much to his dismay.
Sage
Sage is Nerine’s mother and one of her closest confidants. The two share a warm and trusting relationship, and Sage often supports Nerine emotionally during her struggles with self-doubt and responsibility as the Demon King’s daughter.
Cineraria
Cineraria is Nerine’s paternal aunt. While little is detailed about their interactions, she is regarded as part of Nerine’s extended noble family within the Demon Realm.
Lycoris
Lycoris is Nerine’s deceased clone, created as part of an experiment within the Demon World. The two shared a strong emotional bond, and Nerine inherited Lycoris’s memories and singing voice following her death. This connection remains one of Nerine’s most defining traits, shaping her sensitivity and guilt throughout the series.
Etymology
The name Nerine is derived from the genus Nerine, a type of flowering plant native to South Africa, often called the “Guernsey lily.” The flower is known for its delicate, lily-like petals and association with beauty, purity, and fragility, traits that parallel Nerine’s gentle personality and emotional sensitivity in the series.
Her Japanese name, ネリネ (Nerine), is written in katakana, reflecting her origin from the Demon World rather than the Human World. Within the Shuffle! series, the floral theme of her name aligns with the naming convention shared by other heroines, such as Lisianthus and Primula, symbolizing purity, emotion, and the intertwining of fate and affection among the characters.
