Nene Odagiri (小田切 寧々, Odagiri Nene), is a supporting character in the anime and manga series Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches). She is the former Student Council Clerk and Treasurer, later becoming the Vice President of the Student Council, and is one of the original Seven Witches at Suzaku High School. Nene initially comes across as confident and ambitious, often using her beauty and wit to influence others, but her true personality reveals a more vulnerable and caring individual.
As the witch with the charm ability, which causes anyone she kisses to fall in love with her, Nene struggles with being truly understood and loved for who she is. Her arc explores the emotional burden of manipulation and the desire for sincere connection. Though she initially views Ryu Yamada as a rival, her feelings for him evolve over time, and she ultimately plays a key role in the student council’s involvement with the witch powers.
Background

Appearance in anime
Nene Odagiri is a highly respected upperclassman at Suzaku High, known for her intelligence, charisma, and involvement in the student council. Behind her confident image, however, she deals with the isolation that comes from being a witch. Her charm ability forcing others to fall in love with her after a kiss creates superficial relationships based on magic rather than sincerity.
Due to the emotional weight of her power, Nene finds herself uncertain of who truly values her for herself rather than under the influence of her ability. This internal conflict fuels her rivalry with Yamada, especially when she discovers that he is immune to her charm. Her character development is tied closely to the deconstruction of forced affection and her journey to find genuine self-worth and friendship.
Appearance
Nene is a tall, slender girl with long dark brown hair often tied in a ponytail and violet eyes. She is considered one of the most attractive girls at Suzaku High and takes pride in her appearance. Nene is frequently seen in her school uniform, wearing it in a neat and fashionable way that reflects her composed and confident image.
She carries herself with elegance and poise, often using her appearance as a strategic tool to influence others. However, when she’s alone or emotionally exposed, her posture and expressions soften, hinting at her more insecure inner self.
Personality
At first glance, Nene is confident, manipulative, and even competitive especially toward Yamada. She’s used to getting her way and often uses her charm (both supernatural and natural) to influence others. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a young woman who yearns for genuine connection and resents the emptiness of affection gained through magic.
Nene is intelligent, driven, and emotionally complex. She can be sarcastic and cutting, especially when jealous or frustrated, but is also capable of kindness and loyalty once her trust is earned. As she works with the Supernatural Studies Club and the student council, she becomes more open and sincere, learning how to rely on others and express herself without relying on her witch power.
Role in the Story
-
Introduction and Rivalry with Yamada
Nene is introduced as a powerful and influential student with a sharp tongue and a competitive streak. When she learns that Yamada is investigating the witches, she takes an interest partly to maintain control, but also because of his immunity to her charm power. This sparks a rivalry rooted in both curiosity and frustration. -
Discovering Her True Self
Though she initially uses her charm to manipulate and maintain popularity, Nene’s interactions with Yamada and others force her to confront the shallowness of magically-induced affection. She becomes increasingly aware of the loneliness her power causes and begins seeking authentic relationships especially after realizing her own feelings for Yamada may be real. -
Vice President and Ally
After the original witches’ powers are erased, Nene continues to serve as the Vice President of the Student Council. Her leadership skills and emotional growth allow her to become a key ally in managing supernatural events and protecting students from future misuse of witch powers. Though she steps back from romantic pursuits, she supports Yamada and Urara’s relationship with maturity and grace.
Relationships
Ryu Yamada
Nene views Yamada as a rival and challenge someone immune to her power and impossible to manipulate. Initially intrigued and annoyed by him, she later develops genuine feelings, though she ultimately respects his commitment to Urara. Their dynamic evolves into mutual respect, with Nene learning to appreciate him as a friend and equal.
Urara Shiraishi
Although not particularly close at first, Nene gradually develops a respectful relationship with Urara. While she is aware of Urara’s closeness to Yamada, she does not let jealousy consume her and chooses to grow from the experience.
Student Council Members
Nene has a working and sometimes tense relationship with her fellow council members, but she becomes a more compassionate leader over time. Her bond with Miyamura and Igarashi improves as she learns to open up.
