Nebulim

Nebulim (ネビュリム, Nebyurimu) is a Superior Dragon known as the Barrier Dragon (結界竜, Kekkairyū). Holding the seventh seat later the fourth among the Winged Brethren, Nebulim serves as the loyal bodyguard and devoted follower of the Winged King, Ultimatia. As a formidable presence within the hierarchy of dragons, Nebulim is recognized for unwavering loyalty and immense defensive capabilities.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Nebulim is a timid and reserved individual, often resembling a child with social anxiety. He rarely speaks in the presence of others and typically only provides input when absolutely necessary. However, this demeanor changes in the presence of Lady Ultimatia, whom he is sworn to protect. While still naturally shy, Nebulim becomes noticeably more vocal when addressing her concerns, offering advice and voicing his opinions on matters that trouble her. He is fiercely protective of Ultimatia, prioritizing her safety above all else even at the cost of his own life. His unwavering devotion stems from his deep appreciation for kindness, and he holds those who display exceptional compassion, such as Ultimatia, in the highest regard.

Following his defeat alongside Ultimatia and Borgius, Nebulim undergoes a significant change in temperament. While he remains timid, he becomes more willing to question or challenge his master’s decisions when he believes it is for her own good, though he refrains from directly expressing his defiance out of fear of upsetting her. He also begins contributing more actively to strategic discussions, helping his allies anticipate enemy movements and counter them effectively.

Nebulim harbors a deep-seated hatred for Ragna, the dragon hunter who inflicted a devastating defeat upon Ultimatia. His obsession with Ragna intensifies to the point of counting every second the hunter remains alive. This rage manifests in uncontrollable outbursts whenever Ragna is mentioned, fueling his determination to exact vengeance. Upon evolving, Nebulim’s anger reaches such extremes that he is able to sense Crimson’s World Void across dimensions, vowing that his enemies will never escape his wrath.

Despite his outward devotion to Ultimatia, Nebulim wrestles with persistent feelings of loneliness. Though he remains by her side, he yearns for a closer bond, akin to the relationship of a Woltekamui, yet struggles to find a way to bridge the gap between them. Additionally, he possesses a sharp analytical mind, capable of discerning battlefield strategies that even Ultimatia fails to recognize. This keen perception allows him to detect and counter manipulations, such as when Crimson attempted to exploit Ragna to force Ultimatia into depleting her strength.

Appearance

Nebulim is a young boy with short, black hair that partially conceals his eyes and extends down the back of his neck, often obscuring his full face. During the events of the present timeline in Ragna, he possesses two horns one on the right side of his head, which is moderately sized, and another on the left, which is much smaller and nearly imperceptible. In the future, these horns grow significantly, curving upward and extending beyond his head. Additionally, a third, smaller horn develops near the right side of his head.

He wears a high-collared jacket fastened with two belts around the neck area, with additional belts wrapped around the cuffs of his sleeves. His attire also consists of white shorts and sneakers. A long black tail extends from his back, adorned with spikes near its tip, further emphasizing his draconic heritage.

Upon fully maturing, Nebulim undergoes a dramatic transformation, increasing in size to rival that of Woltekamui. His horns extend even further, taking on a shape similar to their future timeline design. The previously small third horn becomes more pronounced, though it remains noticeably straighter than its earlier incarnation. His hands and feet take on a more dragon-like appearance, closely resembling the Seija’s full dragon transformations. The belts previously present around his sleeves and cloak disappear following his evolution. Additionally, his tail grows longer and thicker, with its spikes enlarging to match the tip.

One of the most striking changes occurs in Nebulim’s eyes, which adopt a ripple-like pattern that spreads across their entire surface, enhancing his intimidating presence.

Plot

Background and Role as Ultimatia’s Bodyguard
Nebulim was transformed into a Seija by Ultimatia, granting him the status of a Superior Dragon and making him one of her most loyal bodyguards. As part of the Seija, he played a role in the destruction of nations alongside Ultimatia and the other dragons. Within the original timeline, Nebulim is presumed to have participated in these conquests, standing alongside his master and the Winged Brethren during their battles.

He is first seen during the defeat of Future Ragna, where the Seija discuss how to deal with their fallen adversary. While Nebulim suggests handling the matter peacefully, citing Ultimatia’s teachings, his opinion is quickly dismissed by Woltekamui, who asserts dominance as the strongest among them. When Ultimatia impales Ragna with a blade forged from her own blood, Nebulim instinctively shields her in anticipation of an attack. However, when Ragna chooses to end his own life by stabbing himself with a silver blade, Nebulim is left in disbelief, unable to comprehend why Ragna would reject Ultimatia’s offer. He and the rest of the Seija then depart from Ragna’s lifeless body.

Capital Arc
Nebulim plays a critical role in defending Ultimatia during the confrontation in the capital. As the King of Lese prepares to unleash a concentrated blast of light against the Winged King, Nebulim, alongside Borgius, stands guard to protect her. When Ultimatia expresses gratitude for his loyalty, he becomes flustered, nervously insisting that protecting her is his duty. Later, when Ultimatia decides to turn back time to revive the King of Lese, Nebulim swiftly neutralizes the guards before they can interfere.

Barrier Manipulation and Conflict with Borgius
While working on reinforcing the barrier surrounding the capital, Nebulim is interrupted by Borgius, who urges him to continue his task. Overjoyed by Borgius’ presence, Nebulim reports on his progress, informing him that he has already determined which humans will be erased as part of Ultimatia’s plan. However, when Borgius learns that Ultimatia has wandered into the city streets without protection, he berates Nebulim for his failure as a bodyguard. Deeply affected by the scolding, Nebulim tearfully apologizes but is dismissed, as Borgius demands to know Ultimatia’s exact location.

Encounter with Ragna
Upon locating Ultimatia in the streets, Nebulim expresses relief, fearing Borgius’ wrath over his failure to keep her safe. When he notices Ragna, he instinctively questions whether the newcomer is a dragon hunter. Ultimatia, however, reassures him that Ragna is merely someone suffering from crowd sickness, to which Nebulim dismissively replies that such an ailment is imaginary—only to immediately vomit, proving himself wrong. Amused, Ultimatia remarks on their similarity and suggests moving to a quieter location.

Later, as they converse, Nebulim becomes flustered when Ultimatia thanks him for his loyalty. He insists that his devotion stems from his admiration of her kindness, only to apologize immediately for raising his voice. Their conversation shifts to the extermination of humans, with Ultimatia inquiring about the fate of a child’s parents. Nebulim confirms that they are marked for elimination, explaining that his barrier techniques ensure painless deaths, in accordance with Ultimatia’s vision of mercy. However, their discussion is interrupted when Ragna suddenly reappears, intent on redoing their previous exchange.

Battle Against Ragna
Ragna launches a surprise attack, stabbing Nebulim with a silver blade, instantly killing him and shattering his body into multiple pieces. However, thanks to his regenerative barrier, Nebulim revives in a weakened state and retaliates by using his barrier abilities to restrain Ragna’s movements. Recognizing the overwhelming nature of Ragna’s silver aura, Nebulim acknowledges that his barriers can only hold him for a few moments but remains resolute in buying Ultimatia as much time as possible.

As Ragna unleashes the full force of his Silver Aura Battle Arts, Nebulim desperately pleads for his barrier to withstand the attack, vowing to use his last ounce of strength to protect Ultimatia. However, before he can fully act on his resolve, he is consumed by Slime.

Time Reversal and Second Confrontation
After Ultimatia rewinds time to before the battle, Nebulim reappears in his dragon form and immediately attacks, unleashing a relentless barrage of blows against Ragna and Slime. Overcome with rage from remembering Ultimatia’s previous fate, he attempts to destroy them both. His assault is only halted when Ultimatia intervenes, instructing him to cease his attack. She then requests that he set up a protective barrier to prevent collateral damage, further reinforcing his role as her trusted guardian.

As Ragna once again charges at Ultimatia in stopped time, Nebulim instinctively erects his strongest defensive barrier, vowing that he will never allow Ragna to harm her again. However, when Ultimatia is cut apart by a silver sword, Nebulim catches her severed head in his arms, wrapping his wings around her in a desperate attempt to shield her from further harm. As Ragna momentarily falters due to the backlash of his Silver Aura Battle Arts, Borgius orders Nebulim to take Ultimatia and flee.

While soaring above the capital, Nebulim anxiously wonders if Ragna was caught in the explosion. However, realizing that Ragna’s allies had intervened, he laments their failure to eliminate him. Suspicious of Chimera and Crimson, he inquires about their identities but is unable to fully discern their presence. As Ultimatia trembles in despair, attempting to rewind time once more, Nebulim urges her to resist, fearing that their enemies are manipulating her into making a fatal mistake. Holding her in his arms, he listens as she cries out in anguish.

Maturation and Pursuit of Ragna
In a later discussion with Borgius, Nebulim learns that his maturation period was instantaneous, signifying that he possesses greater potential than Woltekamui. The revelation stuns him, as he believes he was useless in the capital battle, insisting that Kamui would have never allowed such a catastrophe to unfold. Frustrated by his own perceived weakness, he resolves to grow stronger immediately—triggering his full maturation.

With Ultimatia still in his arms, Nebulim swears vengeance against those who attacked her. Using his heightened senses, he locates Crimson’s World Void, a pocket dimension, and begins to break through its barriers in pursuit of his enemies. Just as he declares his intent to destroy the space and drag them out, half of his head is blown apart by an energy blast from Golem. Despite regenerating almost instantly, Nebulim refuses to abandon his mission, vowing that his enemies belong to him alone to kill. His overwhelming power leads to the destruction of the World Void, though his targets ultimately manage to evade capture.

Powers & Abilities

As a Superior Dragon, Nebulim possesses all the fundamental abilities inherent to his kind, including immense physical and magical power, high-speed regeneration, and the capability to produce flames and spawn lesser dragons from his own blood. He can seamlessly shift between his humanoid and full dragon form, the latter unleashing his true power. His strength is so immense that a single Superior Dragon like him has the capability to obliterate entire armies of tens of thousands of soldiers.

Among the Winged Bloodline, Nebulim holds the fourth seat, making him one of the most powerful members of the Seija. His magical abilities allow him to generate a spatial domain of eternal night, which he once used to engulf the entire capital city of Lese. In terms of physical capabilities, he is far superior to the likes of Olto Zora and Melgubude, demonstrating incredible speed and durability. His dragon scales are harder than steel, granting him resistance to conventional attacks, and as a Superior Dragon, he possesses multiple layers of anti-magic resistance, allowing him to withstand even weapons imbued with silverine, which are specifically designed to counter dragons. His Dragonification ability allows him to transform into a fully realized dragon, significantly amplifying his physical prowess and magic power. As an almost-complete Superior Dragon, he also exhibits increased resilience against argentum weapons and Silverine, making him more resistant to traditional dragon-slaying tools.

After reaching his matured state, Nebulim developed Spatial Detection, an advanced ability derived from his barrier magic that enables him to sense beings across vast distances, even those concealed within dimensional boundaries. This was demonstrated when he successfully located Ragna, Crimson, and Chimera within the World Void, a separate dimension disconnected from normal space. Furthermore, his overwhelming strength allowed him to shatter the World Void with ease, proving his capability to disrupt and collapse alternate dimensions. Despite his immense power, Nebulim remains remarkably pain-tolerant, displaying little to no reaction even when on the brink of death. When Golem blasted away half of his skull, Nebulim remained unfazed, immediately refocusing on the battle and ordering an attack. Like many high-class dragons, he possesses exceptional regenerative abilities, capable of restoring even catastrophic injuries such as regenerating half of his head within seconds without any visible strain.

As a Seija, Nebulim wields powerful blood-based abilities that enhance his combat prowess. He can ignite his own blood, creating streams of flame in any direction, and he can spawn low- to mid-class dragons at will using his own life essence. Given enough time, these spawned dragons can develop barrier magic, further increasing their effectiveness in battle. In addition to his offensive capabilities, Nebulim can take flight at will, utilizing energy-like wings that materialize from his back. These wings do not appear to be physically structured but rather formed from an unknown energy substance, allowing him remarkable agility in the air.

In his full dragon form, Nebulim’s size increases drastically, with his palm alone dwarfing the bodies of Ultimatia and Ragna. His wings, which appear temporarily in his human form, become permanent and greatly enlarged in this state. His physical strength skyrockets, making him capable of damaging Ragna, even when he was previously unable to do so in his humanoid form. However, what truly sets Nebulim apart from the other Seija is his immense potential. Unlike his peers, his maturation period was instantaneous, marking him as a being with unparalleled latent ability within the Winged Bloodline. However, despite his extraordinary potential, he has yet to fully showcase the extent of his true capabilities in battle.
