Nazuna Nanakusa (七草 ナズナ, Nanakusa Nazuna), is the main female protagonist of the anime and manga series Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta). A vampire born from birth, Nazuna lives a carefree, unstructured life, avoiding deep connections and commitments until she crosses paths with Kou Yamori, a disillusioned middle school student wandering the night. Though she initially treats Kou as a source of amusement (and delicious blood), their relationship grows into something more profound, challenging her perceptions of companionship, love, and responsibility.
Raised by Kabura Honda, an elder vampire, Nazuna once attended night school, where she formed an important—yet ultimately tragic friendship with Kyouko Mejiro (later known as Anko Uguisu). Nazuna’s personal journey is one of emotional awakening, as she gradually learns to confront her past and opens her heart to others while protecting the fragile yet meaningful world she and Kou build together.
Background

Appearance in anime
Nazuna is a vampire from birth, a rarity in her world. She was raised by Kabura Honda, who treated her with both affection and distance, and guided her through early life while instilling a sense of independence. Nazuna later attended a night school, where she befriended Kyouko Mejiro, a bright and kind-hearted classmate whose fate would later be shaped by the supernatural.
Eventually, Nazuna chose to live alone in Komori, where she led a nocturnal, unbothered existence detached from humans and vampires alike. Her world changed when she met Kou Yamori, a young boy exploring the night and offering his blood in exchange for company. Their bond became the core of the series, as Nazuna grappled with unfamiliar feelings particularly Kou’s desire to fall in love with her to become a vampire, a notion that deeply unsettled her.
Appearance
Nazuna has a slender yet curvaceous build, standing shorter than Kou but with an older, more mature physical appearance. She has light, ash-blonde hair styled in a messy ponytail with long bangs, golden eyes, and sharp fangs, all signature traits of her vampire nature. Her usual outfit consists of casual, revealing streetwear most notably, a black cropped top and short shorts with a hoodie or jacket—fitting her confident and carefree personality.
Despite her teasing demeanor and provocative appearance, Nazuna’s expressions often betray a more complex emotional state, especially when she’s caught off guard by affection or personal conflict.
Personality
Nazuna is laid-back, sarcastic, and mischievous, often teasing Kou with suggestive jokes or playful insults. She has a sharp tongue and isn’t easily embarrassed, presenting herself as bold and emotionally impenetrable. However, beneath her aloof exterior lies a deep fear of emotional vulnerability and commitment.
Nazuna struggles with intimacy not just romantic, but emotional in general. She fears the pain of attachment and avoids confronting her own feelings, especially as Kou grows closer to her. Over time, she demonstrates genuine care and loyalty, fiercely protective of Kou and others she comes to trust. Her gradual evolution from a loner to a loyal companion and protector makes her one of the most emotionally layered characters in the series.
