Nao Tomori

Nao Tomori (友利 奈緒, Tomori Nao), is one of the main characters of Charlotte. She is a first-year student and the Student Council President of Hoshinoumi Academy, tasked with locating and protecting ability users before they are exploited. Highly intelligent, pragmatic, and cunning, Nao is known for her sharp wit, strong sense of justice, and deep emotional resilience.

She often carries a camcorder to record and gather proof of ability users, ensuring they receive proper protection and guidance. Outside of her responsibilities, she is a huge fan of the post-rock band ZHIEND, a passion she developed due to her older brother’s connection to their music. Despite her cold and calculating exterior, Nao has a deeply caring side, especially toward her friends and those who have suffered due to their abilities.

Appearance in anime

Nao was born into a regular family but soon discovered that her older brother had an ability. Unfortunately, the government experimented on him, causing severe psychological damage. This traumatic event shaped Nao’s distrust of authority and reinforced her dedication to protecting ability users.

Because of her experiences, Nao became deeply independent, believing that she can only rely on herself. She enrolled at Hoshinoumi Academy, a school secretly run to safeguard ability users, and quickly rose to the position of Student Council President, leading the effort to track down and protect others like her brother.

When Yuu Otosaka begins abusing his power for personal gain, she is the one who exposes him, forcing him to join the Student Council and use his abilities for a greater purpose. Nao’s ultimate goal is to prevent ability users from suffering the same fate as her brother, even if it means acting ruthless and manipulative in the process.

Appearance

Nao has light silver hair, often tied into a side ponytail with a pink scrunchie, and sharp blue eyes. She has a petite build, and her expression often carries a sharp, calculating gaze, reinforcing her observant and no-nonsense personality.

She wears the Hoshinoumi Academy uniform, which consists of a red blazer, a white blouse, and a black pleated skirt. She is rarely seen without her camcorder, which she uses to record ability users as proof of their powers. Her casual outfits reflect her practical nature, usually consisting of comfortable and simple clothing.

Personality

Nao is intelligent, cunning, and highly pragmatic, often outsmarting others with her sharp mind and quick thinking. She is not afraid to manipulate situations to achieve her goals, often using deception and strategy to get what she wants.

However, despite her ruthless and independent nature, Nao is also incredibly compassionate toward those who suffer due to their abilities. She carries a deep emotional burden from her brother’s fate, motivating her to protect others at all costs.

Nao despises dishonesty, as shown by her immediate disdain for Yuu when he was abusing his ability. However, over time, she grows to trust him, forming one of the most profound relationships in the series.

Role in the Story

  • Recruiting Yuu Otosaka
Nao is the one who catches Yuu cheating using his possession ability and forces him to transfer to Hoshinoumi Academy. She blackmails him into joining the Student Council, making him help track down ability users who might be at risk. Though their relationship starts off antagonistic, Nao gradually helps Yuu mature, teaching him the importance of using his power responsibly.

  • Protecting Ability Users

She often records their abilities as proof, using her camcorder to gather evidence and counter threats. Her sharp instincts and combat ability allow her to handle dangerous situations, even when facing hostile ability users or government agents.

  • Helping Yuu Through His Darkest Moments
After Ayumi’s death, Yuu falls into despair, shutting himself off from everyone. Nao is the only person who reaches out to him, staying by his side and helping him recover from his grief. Her steadfast support ultimately saves Yuu from self-destruction, marking a turning point in their relationship.

  • The Final Goodbye

Nao starts off as Yuu’s manipulator, forcing him to join the Student Council. However, over time, she becomes his closest ally, emotional anchor, and eventual love interest.
