Nanami Aoyama

Nanami Aoyama (青山 七海, Aoyama Nanami) is one of the main characters in the anime and light novel series The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. She is a classmate of Sorata Kanda and eventually becomes a resident of Sakura Dormitory, moving into room 203. Although she often comes across as strict or critical toward Sorata, it is clear to everyone except him that she harbors romantic feelings for him, which he remains oblivious to. Determined to pursue a career as a voice actress, Nanami leaves her home to live independently while chasing her dream.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Nanami Aoyama is known for her disciplined, hardworking nature and strong sense of determination. Often described by Sorata Kanda as having a stern expression that matches her serious tone, she gives the impression of a model honors student. If likened to a cat, she has been compared to an Abyssinian graceful, focused, and independent.

Nanami is goal-oriented and deeply committed to her dream of becoming a voice actress, often pushing herself to the point of exhaustion. Her competitive nature and desire to prove herself stem from a personal complex that drives her to work harder than those around her. While she is usually composed, she can be shy particularly when it comes to her feelings for Sorata, whom she treats with tsundere-like behavior, alternating between criticism and subtle affection. Despite her outward strictness, her devotion to others and her willingness to help make her a respected and admired member of Sakura Dormitory. Chihiro Sengoku even remarks that she makes life easier for everyone in the dorm.

Nanami is also self-conscious about her appearance and modest about her feelings, especially in situations involving Sorata. Though she is often considered to have an attractive figure, she tends to compare herself to others and downplay her own qualities.

She speaks in standard Japanese but occasionally slips into a Kansai accent, particularly when flustered or angry. Over time, her standard Japanese has noticeably improved, likely due to training at her talent office, where she also receives instruction in speech and other professional skills.

Appearance

Nanami is a petite teenage girl with an average build, standing at approximately 158 cm tall. She has a fair complexion, long straight brown hair typically tied into a ponytail, and golden-brown eyes. Her figure has been noted as attractive, and her three sizes are listed as 81-58-83.

She is most commonly seen wearing her school uniform, maintaining a neat and composed appearance that reflects her studious and disciplined personality.

History

Nanami is introduced early in both the Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo light novel and anime as a classmate of Sorata Kanda. Their friendship begins when Sorata takes in a stray cat, drawing disapproval from the school administration. As a result, Sorata is transferred to the Sakura Dormitory, a residence known for housing eccentric students. Despite the change in living arrangements, Nanami supports Sorata by helping him find new homes for the cats he has taken in, marking the beginning of her deeper involvement with the residents of Sakurasou.

Relationships

Sorata Kanda
Nanami maintains a close and supportive relationship with Sorata, often displaying warmth and subtle affection toward him. Though she clearly harbors romantic feelings, she never forces them onto him. Sorata, at various points in the story, shows signs of reciprocating her feelings, but they are often overshadowed by his growing connection with Mashiro Shiina. Despite this, the two remain close friends, encouraging each other to improve and pursue their goals. In the fourth light novel, Nanami meets Sorata’s mother and earns her admiration so much so that she expresses a preference for Nanami as her future daughter-in-law. Toward the end of the light novel series, Nanami cuts her ponytail before returning to see Sorata, symbolizing her emotional growth and decision to move on from her unrequited love.

Mashiro Shiina
Nanami and Mashiro share a complex yet caring relationship. Nanami often helps care for Mashiro, especially with matters involving daily life or gender-sensitive situations. While Mashiro views Nanami as a friend, she occasionally becomes jealous of Nanami’s closeness with Sorata, interpreting their interactions as romantic. As Nanami’s feelings for Sorata deepen, she ultimately chooses to prioritize Mashiro’s happiness, quietly setting aside her own emotions.

Misaki Kamiigusa
Nanami shares a senpai-kouhai relationship with Misaki, who affectionately refers to her as “Nanamin.” Nanami calls her “senpai” and looks up to her as an older sister figure. They enjoy a friendly dynamic, and Misaki’s eccentric yet kind nature earns Nanami’s respect.

Daichi Miyahara
During their first year, Nanami, Sorata, and Daichi formed a trio of close friends. Daichi eventually confesses his feelings to Nanami during the school’s cultural festival, but she gently rejects him, as her heart already belonged to someone else.
