Nanachi (ナナチ), is a Narehate, a being transformed by the Curse of the Abyss upon ascending from its 6th Layer, yet unlike most others subjected to this curse, Nanachi retained their sanity and intellectual clarity. Introduced as a reclusive figure in the 4th Layer, Nanachi is an invaluable ally to Riko and Reg, guiding them through the perils of the Abyss with their extensive knowledge of its ecosystem and unique dangers.
Nanachi’s mysterious origins and tragic past form a compelling backdrop to their character. Despite the pain and trauma they carry, Nanachi’s resilience and compassion shine through, making them a pivotal part of the series’ emotional depth. Their gender is left ambiguous throughout the series, reflecting their enigmatic nature and emphasizing their identity as a survivor of the Abyss.
Background
Appearance in Anime
Nanachi’s life took a fateful turn when they were lured into the clutches of Bondrewd, a White Whistle Delver notorious for conducting inhumane experiments on children to study the effects of the Curse of the Abyss. Alongside their closest companion, Mitty, Nanachi became a subject of Bondrewd’s research in the Idofront, the facility he controlled in the 5th Layer. The experiment subjected Nanachi and Mitty to simultaneous ascension from the 6th Layer, exposing them to the Curse’s devastating effects. While Nanachi was transformed into a Narehate with a somewhat humanoid mind and body, Mitty’s form was grotesquely warped into an immortal, helpless creature. Devastated by Mitty’s fate and unable to bear their suffering, Nanachi fled the Idofront with Mitty, finding solace in isolation within the 4th Layer.
Nanachi’s life of solitude ended when Riko and Reg stumbled upon their hideout. Their initial hesitance to trust the pair gradually gave way to a deep bond, driven by Riko’s determination and Reg’s kindness. Together, they embark on a journey to confront the Abyss’ many dangers, while Nanachi seeks redemption for their past and closure for Mitty’s suffering.
Appearance
Nanachi’s appearance is a testament to the transformative effects of the Abyss’ Curse. They have a fur-covered body resembling a small mammal, with long ears, a bushy tail, and clawed hands and feet. Their eyes, large and expressive, retain a hint of humanity despite their altered form.
Nanachi’s attire reflects their resourcefulness and practicality. They wear a hooded cap adorned with ear-like extensions and a simple cape, which provide protection from the Abyss’ harsh environment. Their design seamlessly blends animalistic and humanoid traits, symbolizing their unique existence as a Narehate.
Personality
Nanachi is a complex character, shaped by the trauma of their past and their compassion for others. They are intelligent, resourceful, and cautious, often serving as a voice of reason in the group. Their knowledge of the Abyss’ ecosystem and survival techniques makes them an invaluable guide, while their medical expertise saves lives on multiple occasions.
Despite their reserved demeanor, Nanachi has a dry sense of humor and a playful side, often teasing Reg in moments of levity. Beneath this facade, however, lies a deep-seated guilt over Mitty’s fate and an unwavering resolve to protect Riko and Reg. Their journey with the duo helps Nanachi rediscover a sense of purpose and belonging.
