Nana Hayashida

Nana Hayashida (林田 奈々, Hayashida Nana), commonly known as Linda (リンダ, Rinda), is the tritagonist of the Golden Time series. She is a second-year university student and a member of the Japanese Culture Festival Research Society. In high school, she was Banri Tada’s best friend. However, due to Banri’s hospitalization following an accident, she is now his senior.

Linda plays an indirect role in Banri’s accident, as it occurred the night of their graduation party after he confessed his feelings to her. When she hesitated and told him to “wait,” Banri, in his emotional state, ended up falling from a bridge, leading to his retrograde amnesia. In the final episode, she finally gives an answer to Banri’s lingering spirit, responding with a long-awaited “Yes,” ultimately allowing his past self to find closure and move on.

Personality

Linda is a kind and protective individual who deeply cares for those around her. She is sociable and outgoing, often engaging in lively conversations with her friends. Her warm and supportive nature makes her a dependable figure, especially when it comes to Banri Tada, whom she looks after with genuine concern. Despite her cheerful demeanor, she struggles with guilt over Banri’s accident, which influences many of her actions throughout the series.

Background

In high school, Linda and Banri Tada were best friends, forming a close and inseparable bond. Many of their classmates believed that they were more than just friends, though Linda never explicitly confirmed or denied having romantic feelings for Banri.

On the night of their graduation ceremony, Banri confessed his feelings to Linda, asking her for a direct answer (“Yes or No?”). Linda, feeling uncertain, asked him to wait for her answer. Banri, believing she would meet him on their usual bridge, waited for her, but before she could arrive, he was struck by a car, resulting in severe head trauma and amnesia.

Banri’s memory loss erased his entire past, including Linda, leaving her devastated and filled with guilt. Though she later becomes his senior in university, she keeps her past connection a secret, unsure if she should remind him of their shared history.

Relationships

Banri Tada
Linda and Banri Tada grew up together in Shizuoka, attending the same schools until high school. After Banri’s accident, which resulted in retrograde amnesia, he lost all memories of their past together. Despite this, they coincidentally reunite as students at Fukurai University, where Linda is now his senior, as Banri was held back for a year due to his hospitalization and rehabilitation.

Although Linda harbors romantic feelings for Banri, she ultimately chooses not to pursue a relationship with him, believing it would not bring him happiness. Instead, she remains a supportive presence in his life, helping him navigate his condition and emotional struggles. Toward the end of the series, she invites Banri to stay with her as his past self begins to resurface and take control of his consciousness.

Nana
Linda shares a close friendship with Nana, who is both her senior and a former member of the Festival Club. Nana acts as a rebellious older sister figure, often displaying a tough exterior but genuinely caring for Linda in her own way. Their relationship is built on mutual respect and understanding, with Nana offering guidance and support when needed.

Mitsuo Yanagisawa
Linda and Mitsuo Yanagisawa became friends while working together alongside Banri and Nana at one of the events hosted by Nana’s boss. They continued to collaborate and spend time together, often meeting at the club and occasionally dining out over summer break. During this time, Mitsuo developed romantic feelings for Linda.

Midway through the series, Linda confesses to Banri that she is aware of Mitsuo’s feelings but does not reciprocate them, viewing him only as a kouhai. However, despite her initial stance, the series hints at a possible shift in her emotions. In the final episodes, Mitsuo persists in his pursuit of Linda, attempting to film her, which flusters her. The ending suggests that Linda may have started to see Mitsuo in a new light, implying the potential for a developing relationship between them.

Legacy

Linda’s role as Banri’s past and his emotional anchor makes her one of Golden Time’s most impactful characters. Her complex emotions, struggles with guilt, and ultimate acceptance of moving forward create a deeply emotional subplot that resonates with themes of regret, lost love, and self-forgiveness.

Despite her unfulfilled romance, Linda remains one of the most beloved characters, representing the strength of letting go and finding peace with the past.

Trivia
