Naho Takamiya is the main female protagonist of the anime and manga series Orange. She is a high school student who begins receiving a series of mysterious letters that appear to be sent from her future self. These letters contain detailed instructions and emotional reflections centered around a new transfer student named Kakeru Naruse, whose life is at the heart of a tragic future the letters aim to prevent.
Appearance

Kakeru Naruse and Naho Takamiya together, sharing a quiet moment
Naho Takamiya is a cute and attractive teenage girl of average height, with a gentle and approachable presence. She has light brown hair that reaches her upper back, styled with side-swept bangs that fall to the left side of her forehead. Her most distinctive facial features are her large hazel-green eyes, which convey her kind and thoughtful personality.
In the future timeline, Naho appears noticeably more mature. She is shown to have grown taller, and her hair has become longer, with the ends appearing wavy and curled, reflecting a more adult and refined version of her younger self. Her overall appearance in both timelines mirrors her quiet strength and emotional depth.
Personality
Naho Takamiya is introduced as a kind-hearted, gentle, and shy girl with a passive nature. She often avoids confrontation and keeps her thoughts to herself, even around her closest friends. This reserved behavior stems not from a lack of opinion, but from a deep desire to avoid hurting or confusing others, which makes it difficult for her to be direct particularly when it comes to expressing her feelings for Kakeru Naruse.
Although she struggles to speak her mind, Naho’s emotions run deep. Her care and concern for those close to her are genuine and unwavering, even if she rarely verbalizes them. Her compassion is reflected in her actions, as she constantly puts the needs of others before her own and quietly supports those she loves.
One of her more comical traits is her tendency to scream or panic when she becomes nervous or embarrassed, adding a light-hearted charm to her otherwise soft-spoken and serious personality.
Plot
At the beginning of the Orange series, Naho Takamiya receives a mysterious letter written by her future self, warning her of upcoming events and expressing deep regret over past decisions. Initially skeptical, Naho opens the letter on her way to school and reads about a new transfer student named Kakeru Naruse, who is predicted to become an important part of her life.
As the events described in the letter begin unfolding exactly as written, Naho starts to believe in its authenticity. The letter reveals a tragic future in which Kakeru is no longer alive, and her older self pleads with her to make different choices to prevent his untimely death.
With this knowledge, Naho gradually becomes more determined to follow the guidance in the letters, despite her shy and passive nature. Alongside her group of close friends, she takes deliberate steps to change the future, offering support and companionship to Kakeru in the hopes of saving him from the despair that would eventually lead him to take his own life.
The story follows Naho’s emotional journey as she confronts regret, grows stronger, and discovers the impact of small choices on the lives of others.
Relationships
Hiroto Suwa
In the present timeline, Hiroto Suwa is one of Naho Takamiya’s closest friends. Suwa is deeply caring and consistently supportive, often standing up for Naho when she is treated poorly such as during incidents involving Rio Ueda and her group. Although Suwa quietly harbors romantic feelings for Naho, she remains unaware of them, and she does not reciprocate his affections in the current timeline.
After reading the letter from his future self and realizing the truth behind its content, Suwa makes the selfless decision to put Naho and Kakeru’s happiness above his own. Recognizing the significance of Kakeru in Naho’s life, he fully commits to helping them grow closer. Alongside their friends Azusa Murasaka, Takako Chino, and Saku Hagita, Suwa actively works to change the future and prevent Kakeru’s tragic fate.
In the alternate timeline, set ten years in the future, Suwa and Naho are married (now Naho Suwa) and have a son named Matsumoto Suwa. Despite building a life together, Suwa is burdened by regret, believing that if he had told Naho about Kakeru’s feelings earlier, it might have changed the outcome. Motivated by this, he joins the others in sending letters to their past selves, hoping to alter the course of events and give Kakeru a second chance at life.
Kakeru Naruse
Kakeru Naruse is both Naho’s love interest and a cherished friend. A transfer student from Tokyo, he joins Naho’s class at the beginning of the school year. On his first day, he is invited by Naho, Suwa, Azusa, Takako, and Hagita to walk home with them, forming the foundation of their close-knit friendship. During their walk, Azusa shares buns from her family bakery. Though Naho doesn’t voice her preference, Kakeru notices her subtle disappointment and thoughtfully trades his curry bun for her melon bun, a small but meaningful gesture that hints at his attentiveness and growing affection.
Kakeru briefly dates Rio Ueda after she confesses to him. Before giving his answer, he asks Naho for her opinion by writing a note and hiding it inside the eraser she lent him. In the alternate timeline, Naho failed to notice the note, but in the current timeline, aware of the future through her letter, she finds the message and tries to respond in time. Though she scribbles “NO” on a piece of paper and places it in Kakeru’s shoe locker, she’s too late, Kakeru had already agreed to date Ueda, leaving Naho disheartened.
Over time, however, Kakeru and Naho grow closer as she and her friends strive to change his fate. Their bond strengthens, and she becomes a central emotional support for him as he battles with grief and depression.
In the alternate future, Naho and Kakeru are married (making her Naho Naruse) and have a son together, a result of the successful efforts by Suwa and their friends to alter the past. By sending letters back in time, they create a world where Kakeru survives, and Naho and Kakeru are able to live a life free from the regret that haunted them in the original timeline.
