Nadeko Sengoku (千石 撫子, Sengoku Nadeko) is a character in the Monogatari series. She is a childhood friend of Tsukihi Araragi and an acquaintance of her older brother, Koyomi Araragi. Nadeko becomes the victim of a mysterious curse that causes an invisible snake to wrap around her body, leaving painful scars resembling snake scales. In her efforts to lift the curse, she reunites with Koyomi after a long period of separation, marking the beginning of her involvement in the series’ supernatural events.
Appearance

Nadeko Sengoku Appearance with Short Hair
Nadeko is a petite girl with dark brown hair described as black in the light novels and chocolate brown eyes. She stands at 153 cm (5’0″) and weighs approximately 38 kg. During the period when she was afflicted by the jagirinawa curse, Nadeko dressed in a way that concealed the snake-like scars on her body. Her outfit at the time included a waist pouch, an orange newsboy cap, a pink blouse, an orange jacket, and loose-fitting denim pants. She habitually kept her gaze lowered, with her long bangs often obscuring her eyes. The shape of her newsboy cap is believed to symbolically resemble the head of a snake, reflecting the nature of her curse.
After the curse is lifted, Nadeko changes into more casual and comfortable clothing, typically favoring skirts. As the series progresses, she undergoes a visual transformation and eventually cuts her hair short.
Personality
Nadeko is soft-spoken and shy, often avoiding eye contact and relying on her long forelocks to shield herself from others. Her hair serves as a source of comfort and emotional security, and she is notably protective of it. She tends to refer to herself in the third person, a habit commonly associated with young children in Japanese speech and in the English localization of Otorimonogatari, she uses a lowercase “i” to reflect her immature and childlike manner of speaking. Her dialogue often includes spelling errors and a limited vocabulary, suggesting her emotional and cognitive development may have been stunted due to a sheltered upbringing. Nadeko also enjoys making puns with her name, adding a whimsical layer to her personality.
She has a strong aversion to physical contact, particularly disliking the sensation of warmth transferred through touch, even from her own parents. Over time, she develops a growing emotional dependency on Koyomi Araragi, whom she affectionately calls “Koyomi-onii-chan.” This attachment intensifies under the emotional strain caused by the snake curse afflicting her.
Background
Nadeko became acquainted with the Araragi family through her childhood friendship with Tsukihi Araragi, whom she affectionately refers to as “Rara-chan” (ララちゃん). During their early years, Nadeko frequently visited the Araragi household, where she eventually met Tsukihi’s older brother, Koyomi Araragi, who was then in sixth grade. After Koyomi helped repair her bicycle, Nadeko began to admire him and started calling him “Koyomi-onii-chan.” However, their interactions ceased roughly six years prior to the main events of the series, and Koyomi appears to have forgotten their first meeting something that quietly disappoints Nadeko.
In middle school, Nadeko became the target of a curse after she rejected the romantic advances of a male classmate. The curse, known as the jagirinawa, took the form of an invisible snake that coiled around her body, inflicting her with painful, snake-like scars. The curse was triggered through a charm passed on to her by a mysterious individual, setting the stage for her reentry into Koyomi’s life and deeper involvement in the supernatural events of the series.
Relationship
Tsukihi Araragi
Tsukihi is Nadeko’s childhood friend and the person who introduced her to the Araragi family. Nadeko affectionately calls her “Rara-chan,” and the two were close as children. Although they don’t interact as often in the present timeline, their bond remains rooted in shared memories from their early years.
Koyomi Araragi
Nadeko harbors deep affection for Koyomi, stemming from their brief encounter in childhood when he helped fix her bicycle. She has called him “Koyomi-onii-chan” ever since and views him as both a comforting presence and a source of emotional dependence. As her attachment grows, particularly during the events surrounding her curse, her feelings become more intense and complicated.
