Mugi Awaya

Mugi Awaya (粟屋 麦, Awaya Mugi), is the main male protagonist of Scum’s Wish (Kuzu no Honkai). He is a high school student who is deeply in love with Akane Minagawa, his former home tutor, and now a music teacher at his school. Mugi’s unrequited love for Akane sets the stage for much of his emotional journey in the series. In his quest to cope with his feelings, Mugi enters into a fake relationship with Hanabi Yasuraoka, a fellow student who is also dealing with unrequited love. Together, they form a pact to fulfill their emotional and physical needs, but as their relationship develops, it becomes clear that Mugi’s feelings for Akane and his bond with Hanabi are far more complicated than either of them anticipated.

Mugi’s story explores the emotional confusion, lust, and loneliness of adolescence, presenting a raw and honest depiction of love that is unfulfilled, selfish, and deeply human.

Background

Appearance in Anime

Mugi Awaya comes from a family with certain expectations and pressures, though his background is less explored compared to his emotional struggles. What defines Mugi is his profound love for Akane Minagawa, who was once his tutor and has now become his teacher. Despite their time together in a student-teacher relationship, Mugi’s feelings for her have only deepened over time. However, as he witnesses Akane’s affection for another man, Mugi is forced to confront the reality of his unrequited love.

In his attempt to fill the emotional void left by Akane’s indifference, Mugi meets Hanabi Yasuraoka, and they form a pact to enter a fake relationship. This relationship, though born out of loneliness and a desire for emotional connection, becomes more complicated as Mugi grows closer to Hanabi, and he begins to question his true feelings.

Appearance

Mugi Awaya has a youthful yet mature appearance that reflects both his status as a high school student and his more serious, introspective nature. His features are sharp but not overly striking, giving him a relatable look. Mugi’s hair is typically styled in a simple yet neat way, emphasizing his understated appearance. He often dresses in the standard school uniform, which complements his somewhat reserved character.

Though not the most attention-grabbing in terms of physical features, Mugi’s expression often conveys a sense of quiet contemplation, reflecting his inner emotional conflicts. His calm demeanor and subtle charm make him an approachable character, yet his emotional complexity sets him apart as the story’s protagonist.

Personality

Mugi Awaya is introspective, sensitive, and emotionally complex. His personality is shaped by the intensity of his feelings for Akane and his deep sense of loneliness. While he is a thoughtful and kind person, Mugi’s internal struggles with unrequited love often cause him to act impulsively or retreat into himself. His need for emotional connection is central to his character, and his desire to be loved and understood drives much of his actions throughout the series.

Despite his quiet nature, Mugi is capable of great emotional depth, and his character often shows a quiet vulnerability. His relationship with Hanabi Yasuraoka is both comforting and challenging, as it forces him to confront his feelings for Akane while developing a deeper bond with Hanabi. Mugi’s emotional journey is one of self-awareness, as he learns more about himself and what he truly desires from his relationships.

While he can be seen as somewhat passive in his feelings, Mugi’s story is about breaking free from the constraints of his unrequited love and finding his own path toward emotional growth and maturity.

Role in the Story

A Love He Cannot Reach: Mugi’s core conflict lies in his unrequited love for Akane, whom he cannot stop idealizing. Her flirtatious and manipulative personality makes it hard for him to see her clearly, yet he remains emotionally tethered to her, even when it hurts him.

A Relationship Built on Loneliness: To cope with this pain, Mugi forms a mutual agreement with Hanabi Yasuraoka. They agree to use each other as emotional and physical substitutes for their unattainable loves. While their relationship lacks real romantic affection at first, it gradually evolves into something more complicated, revealing their mutual fear of being alone.

Confronting the Truth: Throughout the series, Mugi confronts the nature of his feelings and the consequences of seeking comfort without love. His internal journey leads him to confront Akane’s true nature, his dependence on idealized love, and ultimately, his need to find emotional independence.

Relationships

Akane Minagawa: Mugi’s former tutor and current music teacher, Akane is the object of his intense desire. Mugi believes he loves her, but his obsession is based on an idealized version of her, not the manipulative and emotionally detached woman she truly is. Their relationship becomes a painful lesson in facing reality.

Hanabi Yasuraoka: A classmate also suffering from unrequited love, Hanabi becomes Mugi’s partner in a fake relationship. They comfort each other both physically and emotionally, but their connection is built on shared pain rather than genuine love. Despite this, their bond is one of the most emotionally charged and revealing in the series.

Trivia

    • Mugi was voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki in the anime adaptation.
      • His favorite subject is literature, reflecting his introspective nature.
      • He often writes in a journal to process his thoughts and emotions.
      • Mugi’s name (麦) means “wheat,” symbolizing something ordinary, which reflects his desire to be special in love but feeling emotionally insignificant.
      • Despite being emotionally dependent on others, Mugi shows signs of growth and self-awareness as the story progresses.

    Legacy

      • Mugi Awaya is one of the most emotionally nuanced male protagonists in modern romance anime. His character represents the gray areas of teenage desire, loneliness, and emotional immaturity. Unlike typical love stories, Scum’s Wish uses Mugi to challenge romantic ideals, presenting a protagonist who is flawed, introspective, and deeply human.
        • His journey doesn’t offer clean resolutions or idealized love, but rather an honest exploration of what it means to love someone who doesn’t love you back—and how to grow from that pain. Through Mugi, the series captures the bittersweet nature of adolescence, making him a standout character in the genre.
