Personality and Characteristics

Motoyasu is an energetic and somewhat naïve young man with a strong sense of chivalry. While his kindness and loyalty make him sympathetic to others’ plights, his overly trusting nature often leads him astray, especially at the start of the story. He is quick to act on his emotions and has a notable weakness for attractive women, which influences his choices and loyalties, sometimes with unfortunate consequences.

A collection of Durkheim's courses on the origins of socialism (1896), edited and published by his nephew, Marcel Mauss, in 1928

With an exaggerated expression and a touch of comedic flair, Motoyasu Kitamura shows his playful and sometimes clueless side, bringing a lighthearted moment to his adventures.

Abilities

As the Spear Hero, Motoyasu wields legendary-level spears, each with unique capabilities, and can adapt his weapon for various attacks. His expertise with the spear enables him to perform powerful, high-damage physical and magical attacks, making him highly effective in close-range combat.

  • Spear Transformation: Motoyasu’s legendary spear can change form, each with specific strengths and effects. These transformations allow him to adapt to different combat situations.
  • High Agility: Motoyasu’s fighting style is highly agile, allowing him to move quickly and attack with precision.

Role in the Story

Motoyasu is initially one of Naofumi’s antagonists, blindly supporting Malty S. Melromarc in her schemes against Naofumi. As one of the Four Legendary Heroes summoned to protect the world, he holds his duty seriously but lacks a grounded sense of justice. His unwavering trust in Malty and belief in Naofumi’s “villainy” leads to numerous conflicts, and he frequently clashes with Naofumi in attempts to prove himself superior.

Eventually, Motoyasu begins to see through Malty’s manipulations and recognizes Naofumi’s true character, leading him to question his former alliances. Through his journey, Motoyasu experiences a shift in perspective, becoming less self-centered and realizing the gravity of his role as a hero.

Relationships

Naofumi Iwatani

Initially hostile toward Naofumi, Motoyasu believes Malty’s lies about him, causing their relationship to be tense. Over time, however, he comes to understand Naofumi’s motives and begins to appreciate him as an ally.

Malty S. Melromarc

Motoyasu’s admiration for Malty leads to him supporting her false accusations against Naofumi. This relationship eventually deteriorates as he realizes her deceitful nature.

Other Heroes

Motoyasu’s relationships with the other heroes are complex, often marked by rivalry but eventually shifting toward camaraderie as he learns the importance of teamwork.

Trivia and Insights

  • Weakness for Women: Motoyasu’s susceptibility to beautiful women often leads him into difficult situations, especially with Malty’s manipulations early in the series.
  • Alternate Realities: In the spin-off series, Motoyasu is reincarnated multiple times, where he develops unique insights into his relationships with other heroes, especially Naofumi.
  • Animal Lover: Motoyasu has a strong affinity for animals, particularly Filolials, and even dreams of raising them in some versions of the story.

Legacy and Impact

Motoyasu’s journey as the Spear Hero is one of growth and self-discovery, eventually leading him to recognize the importance of genuine justice and compassion over blind loyalty. His development underscores themes of redemption and understanding, marking his transformation from a naïve hero into a more thoughtful and dependable ally to Naofumi and the rest of the team.
