Monkey D. Dragon

Monkey D. Dragon, also known as the “Rebellious Dragon,” is the infamous supreme commander of the Revolutionary Army and one of its founding members. Once a Marine, Dragon grew disillusioned with their concept of justice and formed the Revolutionary Army to overthrow the World Government. His actions and ideals have earned him the title of the “World’s Worst Criminal.” He is the father of Monkey D. Luffy and the son of Monkey D. Garp, marking him as a key figure in the One Piece series.

Appearance in Anime

Dragon was born in the Goa Kingdom, following the same lineage as his father, Monkey D. Garp, and his son, Monkey D. Luffy. Initially a Marine, Dragon’s experiences and the fallout from the Ohara Incident led to his disillusionment with the World Government’s methods of enforcing justice. These events fueled his desire to create a world free from oppression, culminating in the formation of the Revolutionary Army, where he became its supreme commander.

Before establishing the Revolutionary Army, Dragon was the captain of the Freedom Fighters, a precursor organization that shared similar ideals. Over time, he expanded his influence, recruiting notable figures like Sabo, who would later become his second-in-command after Dragon saved him from drowning during a World Noble attack.

Appearance

Dragon is a tall, imposing figure with a distinctive tattoo running along the left side of his face. He has long black hair and an intense gaze that complements his enigmatic and rebellious demeanor. His usual attire includes a dark cloak and a simple green tunic, emphasizing his practicality and focus on the revolutionary cause.

Personality

Dragon is a calm and calculated leader, often appearing stoic and unshakable. His dedication to overthrowing the World Government stems from his belief in true justice and freedom for all. Despite his reserved nature, Dragon shows genuine care for his subordinates and allies, as seen in his rescue of Sabo and his mentorship within the Revolutionary Army. His mysterious persona and limited screen time make him one of the most intriguing characters in the series.

Role in the Story

Loguetown Arc
Dragon made his first appearance during the Loguetown Arc, where he saved Luffy from Marine Captain Smoker, marking his quiet but impactful entry into the series. His intervention hinted at his deeper connection to Luffy and his growing influence as a revolutionary leader.

Revolutionary Army’s Growth
As the supreme commander, Dragon’s efforts to overthrow the World Government have been central to the Revolutionary Army’s narrative. Through figures like Sabo, Dragon’s ideals and influence extend across the world, challenging the corrupt systems upheld by the Celestial Dragons and the Marines.

Background Influence
Although Dragon primarily operates from the shadows, his actions and ideals are pivotal to the overarching conflict in One Piece. His commitment to freedom and justice directly contrasts with the authoritarian rule of the World Government, positioning him as a key figure in the Final Saga.

Relationships

  • Monkey D. Luffy
Dragon is Luffy’s father, though their relationship is distant. While he supports Luffy’s pursuit of freedom, their bond has not been explored deeply in the series.

  • Monkey D. Garp
As Dragon’s father, Garp often avoids discussing Dragon’s revolutionary activities, reflecting the tension between their ideologies.

  • Sabo
Dragon saved Sabo’s life and brought him into the Revolutionary Army, mentoring him into becoming the organization’s second-in-command.

  • Revolutionary Army
As its founder and leader, Dragon commands immense respect from his subordinates, including notable figures like Ivankov, Kuma, and Sabo.
