Mokona

Mokona (モコナ, Mokona) is a supporting character in Magic Knight Rayearth and one of the most recognizable mascots created by CLAMP.

This mysterious, rabbit-like creature accompanies Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu on their journey through Cephiro, often providing guidance, comic relief, and unexpected bursts of magic that aid the Magic Knights in their quest.

Appearance

Mokona is a small, white, and fluffy creature that closely resembles a bunny, complete with long ears and rounded feet. His soft, elastic body gives him a bouncy and playful appearance, something Fuu herself notices during their adventures. At the center of his forehead is a red circular gem that occasionally glows in other colors such as blue, green, or yellow, depending on the magic he uses or the situation he is in.

However, after the death of Zagato, the man she secretly loves. Emeraude’s appearance and spirit undergo a dramatic transformation. Consumed by grief, rage, and despair, she evolves into a more mature and menacing form, her once-soft expression now shadowed by fury and sorrow. In this state, she shatters her own imprisonment, her divine aura replaced by a haunting power born from anguish. This dark transformation serves as a tragic reflection of her inner torment, revealing the pain of a goddess torn between duty and forbidden love.

Mokona with Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu

Cute, affectionate, and mischievous, Mokona is the perfect companion for any adventure. Throughout Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu’s quest to become Magic Knights, he remained by their side, always eager to help in his own unique way. Using the gem on his forehead, Mokona could magically provide the girls with whatever they needed, from shelter, often in the form of a miniature hotel room, to food and even transportation across Cephiro. Though he rarely participated directly in battles, his presence brought warmth and lightheartedness to their journey.

Mokona genuinely cares for the girls and often shows deep concern for their safety. Despite his tendency to flee from danger, he displayed great bravery when he sacrificed himself to save Hikaru from a monster made of light after Umi and Fuu had already been captured. His loyalty and courage proved that beneath his playful and silly behavior lies a heart full of love and selflessness. His bond with the Magic Knights is one built on mutual trust and affection, making him an irreplaceable member of their team.

Mokona is also well known for his mischievous side. He frequently teases Umi and the fairy Primera, especially when Primera tries to interfere with Lantis and Hikaru’s relationship. His playful antics often lead to amusing moments, but they also serve to lighten the tension during their long and challenging journey. Over time, his behavior gradually changes throughout the series. He starts off as energetic and chirpy, much like a wild animal, but eventually becomes calmer and more easygoing, showing growth in both personality and emotional awareness.

Mokona also shares a lighthearted friendship with Presea, the master craftswoman of Cephiro. The two often engage in humorous exchanges, with Presea jokingly threatening to “punish” him after finding the little creature making a mess in her study. She would tease him by saying she might test how far his ears could stretch or hang him by his feet. Despite their playful banter, their friendship reflects the warmth and humor that Mokona brings to everyone around him, making him a beloved companion not only to the Magic Knights but to all who meet him.

Abilities and Skills

Mokona possesses a red gem on his forehead that grants him remarkable magical abilities. Through this gem, he can create various items out of thin air, making him an invaluable companion to the Magic Knights on their journey. He can also project images and messages, such as when he relayed Clef’s communications to the group, allowing them to receive guidance even from afar.

In addition to his creation and communication abilities, Mokona can generate magical transports capable of carrying the Magic Knights across great distances that would otherwise be impossible to traverse on foot. His powers, while often presented playfully, are essential to the Knights’ survival and progress, revealing that behind his cheerful demeanor lies immense power.
