Mitty (ミーティ, Mīti), was an amorphous Narehate who resided with Nanachi in the 4th Layer of the Abyss. Once a regular human girl, Mitty’s appearance and mind were irreversibly altered due to the Curse of the 6th Layer, leaving her in a grotesque and immortal form. Her story is one of the most tragic in Made in Abyss, as her transformation represents the horrifying consequences of the Abyss’ depths and the inhuman experiments conducted by Bondrewd.
Though Mitty’s original body was mercifully put to rest by Reg, a perfect replica of her was later created by Belaf in The Village of Iruburu, retaining an exact copy of her soul from that moment in time.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Mitty was once a cheerful and kindhearted girl, known for her lively spirit and unshakable optimism. She became one of Bondrewd’s test subjects after being lured into the Idofront, where she befriended Nanachi during their shared captivity. As part of Bondrewd’s cruel experiments, Mitty and Nanachi were subjected to the Curse of the 6th Layer by being sent down and subsequently forced to ascend. While Nanachi retained their sanity and gained a semi-functional Narehate form, Mitty’s fate was far worse. Her body was twisted into a monstrous, blob-like form, and her mind deteriorated significantly. Though she retained some level of awareness and recognition of Nanachi, Mitty’s existence became one of endless suffering, made worse by the fact that she was rendered immortal. Bondrewd exploited her immortality for further experimentation, deepening Nanachi’s sense of guilt and helplessness.
Nanachi eventually escaped with Mitty, vowing to protect her. The two lived in isolation on the 4th Layer, where Nanachi cared for Mitty and sought ways to ease her suffering. Mitty’s tragic condition weighed heavily on Nanachi, driving them to seek a way to end her pain.
Appearance
Mitty’s appearance as a Narehate is a grotesque departure from her original human form. She has an amorphous, fleshy body with no discernible limbs, covered in patches of fur and other organic growths. Her face, though misshapen, retains a pair of expressive eyes, hinting at her former humanity.
Her monstrous form starkly contrasts with her once cheerful and innocent personality, emphasizing the cruelty of the experiments that led to her transformation.
Personality
Prior to her transformation, Mitty was a bright and bubbly girl with an unwavering optimism that brought comfort to those around her. Even after her transformation, traces of her original personality remained, particularly in her attachment to Nanachi. She showed signs of recognizing and responding to Nanachi’s care, suggesting that her bond with them transcended her physical and mental deterioration.
Mitty’s lingering humanity and connection to Nanachi make her story deeply emotional, highlighting the resilience of love and friendship even in the face of unimaginable suffering.
Role in the Story
Life with Nanachi
After escaping Bondrewd’s facility, Mitty and Nanachi lived together in the 4th Layer, where Nanachi devoted themselves to caring for her. Despite her immortal and monstrous state, Mitty remained an important part of Nanachi’s life, serving as a source of motivation and emotional connection.
Merciful End
When Riko and Reg arrived in the 4th Layer, Nanachi revealed Mitty’s tragic past and requested Reg’s help in ending her suffering. Reg used his Incinerator to obliterate Mitty, freeing her from her torment. This moment marked a significant turning point for Nanachi, allowing them to move forward while carrying the memory of their beloved friend.
Mitty’s Replica
In the Village of Iruburu, it is revealed that Belaf, one of the Three Sages, created an exact replica of Mitty, complete with a copy of her soul. This duplicate was used as a source of “Value” for Belaf’s sustenance. The revelation of this replica added a layer of complexity to Mitty’s story, as her existence continued to resonate with Nanachi and the group.
