Appearance in Anime

Misaki Yata is a young man with spiky chestnut-colored hair and large hazel eyes. He is notably self-conscious about his short stature, often reacting defensively when it is mentioned. His bangs are usually brushed back, though a few strands hang loosely over his forehead. The HOMRA insignia is tattooed on his left collarbone.

His typical attire consists of a long-sleeved white V-neck shirt with blue lining, paired with a black tank top underneath, and dark green shorts. He accessorizes with a large black wristwatch, black socks, blue-and-gold sneakers, a red sweater tied around his waist, a black beanie, and a set of headphones draped around his neck.

In his middle school years, Yata’s appearance was more subdued. His hair was longer, straighter, and flipped upward at the ends, with his bangs falling freely over his forehead to his nose. His side bangs extended to his chin. During this time, he wore a standard school uniform: a long-sleeved white shirt with an open collar beneath a yellow-green vest, a dark red jacket, and black trousers. The outfit was accessorized with a red ribbon tied around his collar, fastened with a blue, cross-shaped pendant.

After joining HOMRA, Yata’s look grew noticeably “wilder.” His hair became shorter, spikier, and messier, while his clothing shifted to resemble his current street-style attire. Early in his time with the clan, he often wore a dark red shirt in place of the plain white one he is most commonly seen in later.

Personality

Misaki Yata is characterized as a boisterous and hot-headed individual, known for his brashness and short temper. He frequently acts without hesitation in combat, often attacking opponents with blunt force, and is prone to vulgar outbursts when angered or frustrated. Yata is especially sensitive about his short stature, reacting defensively or aggressively when it is mentioned. Despite his rough and irritable nature, he demonstrates deep loyalty and respect toward his fellow members of HOMRA, particularly Mikoto Suoh, and openly cherishes his time in the clan even referring fondly, if bitterly, to his past friendship with Saruhiko Fushimi.

Although often immature, Yata reveals a softer, more vulnerable side in certain situations. He becomes visibly flustered around women, frequently blushing, stuttering, and avoiding eye contact, which contrasts sharply with his usual aggressive attitude. He also harbors strong feelings of attachment to HOMRA, regarding the group as his family and devoting himself wholeheartedly to its members.

Yata is notably insecure about his first name, Misaki, which he considers feminine-sounding. He insists on being addressed by his surname and becomes openly hostile when others, intentionally or not, call him by his given name.

History

As a middle school student, Misaki Yata was a loner who rarely interacted with others until he befriended Saruhiko Fushimi, who would become his closest companion. Their friendship began when Yata discovered Fushimi playing a JUNGLE mini-game while hiding in a bathroom stall. Though initially dismissive, Fushimi eventually invited Yata to join him, and the two grew inseparable.

During this time, Yata was approached by Aya Oogai, Fushimi’s cousin, who invited him on a JUNGLE mission. Hesitant, Yata begged Fushimi to accompany him. Together with Aya, they attempted to board the Himmelreich airship using the “Candle App,” though the mission ultimately failed. Yata’s comedic attempt to impersonate Aya’s female friend over the phone briefly lightened the mood, earning a rare laugh from Fushimi.

Their friendship deepened when Yata visited Fushimi’s home and discovered the neglect and emotional abuse inflicted by Niki Fushimi, Saruhiko’s father. Despite the hostile environment, Yata remained supportive, reassuring his friend that he would always be there for him. This loyalty made Yata the first person to show Saruhiko genuine friendship.

One day, while idling in the streets, Yata and Fushimi encountered Mikoto Suoh, the Red King. Impressed by Mikoto’s display of power, the pair accepted an invitation to join HOMRA. Over time, Yata grew to idolize Mikoto, while remaining devoted to Fushimi. However, their bond fractured after Fushimi defected to Scepter 4. When confronted, Fushimi burned his HOMRA insignia and derided the clan, declaring his disdain for it. The act enraged Yata, who perceived it as betrayal, and their friendship came to a bitter end.

As a Red Clansman, Yata quickly earned a reputation for his fiery temper and loyalty to HOMRA. He often served at the forefront of their battles, embodying the clan’s aggressive spirit. During HOMRA’s recruitment of Shōhei Akagi, Yata initially tried to intimidate the newcomer but later witnessed his acceptance into the clan by Mikoto. Although he frequently clashed with Shōhei’s superior, Bandō, over the latter’s jealousy, Yata ultimately fought alongside his comrades when HOMRA intervened to rescue Bandō and Shōhei from Rakshasa drug dealers.

Throughout his time in HOMRA, Yata remained deeply attached to the clan, balancing his aggressive personality with unwavering loyalty to his comrades and a lingering, complicated bond with his former friend, Fushimi.

Powers and Abilities

Red Aura
As a member of HOMRA, Yata wields the clan’s signature Red Aura, regarded as one of the strongest among its members. His Aura manifests in the form of red or pink flames, which he can generate from different parts of his body and even channel through his skateboard. When riding, the skateboard appears to ignite, emitting sparks from the wheels. At times, Yata’s Aura surrounds him in a fiery shroud, and in moments of rage it can erupt into a large, tornado-like blaze.

Enhanced Strength
Despite his relatively small stature, Yata demonstrates remarkable physical strength. He has shown the ability to push and lift objects many times larger than himself, such as a heavy billboard that was crushing him, using only one arm.

Hand-to-Hand Combat
Yata is skilled in close-quarters combat, relying on a combination of punches and kicks, often in tandem with his skateboard and Aura. His fighting style incorporates elements of breakdancing, skateboarding stunts, and basic martial arts, giving his movements speed, unpredictability, and flair.

Weapon Proficiency
In addition to his skateboard, Yata is proficient with other melee weapons, most notably a baseball bat and a bō staff, which he wields with considerable effectiveness in combat.

Equipment

Skateboard
Yata’s signature item is his black skateboard, which he carries at all times. In addition to serving as his primary mode of transportation, it doubles as a combat tool. The skateboard is highly durable, capable of parrying sword strikes without breaking. On its underside is HOMRA’s trademark flame-patterned insignia, symbolizing his pride as a Red Clansman.

Headphones
Yata frequently wears a pair of headphones around his neck. While they appear to serve no functional purpose having no cord and never being used for music they are a consistent part of his appearance, acting more as a personal accessory than practical equipment.

Baseball Bat
Yata often uses a standard baseball bat as a weapon, even incorporating it into his combat style while riding his skateboard. Though he wields it with great effectiveness, he does not appear attached to any particular bat, discarding them during fights if necessary. In K: Missing Kings, his bat is depicted as bent and worn, leading him to replace it before battle.

Metal Rod/Bō Staff
During the confrontation with Douhan Hirasaka while rescuing Anna Kushina, Yata improvised with a metal rod as a weapon. After Anna awakened her powers as the Red King, the rod transformed under the influence of HOMRA’s Aura into a more refined bō staff, which Yata has since adopted as one of his main weapons.

Wristwatch
Worn on his left wrist, Yata’s large black wristwatch functions both as a timepiece and as a communication device within HOMRA. It allows him to send and receive messages and images, serving as the clan’s equivalent of a mobile phone. The watch was a gift from Saruhiko Fushimi, highlighting the significance of their past friendship.
