Misaki Usui (碓氷 美咲, Usui Misaki, née 鮎沢, Ayuzawa) is the protagonist and main female character of Maid Sama! She is best known for her role as the former Student Council President of Seika High School, where she earned the nickname “Demon President” due to her strict and authoritative leadership. Despite her tough exterior, Misaki secretly worked part-time as a maid at Maid Latte to support her family.
Her primary love interest is Takumi Usui, with whom she becomes engaged in Chapter 81 and later marries in Chapter 85. Following their marriage, she takes on the surname Usui. In the later chapters, she is depicted working as a diplomat and lawyer, frequently traveling to different countries, an aspect that Takumi expresses dissatisfaction with due to the reduced time they can spend together.
Background

Maid Appearance
Misaki Ayuzawa was born on September 29 to Sakuya Ayuzawa and Minako Ayuzawa, with Libra as her zodiac sign. She has a younger sister, Suzuna Ayuzawa.
During her elementary school years, Misaki befriended Hinata Shintani, an overweight young boy, after he fell from a tree. She often defended him from bullies and supported him emotionally, especially after his parents passed away in a car accident. When Hinata refused to live with his grandparents, Misaki convinced him otherwise. Before his departure, she gave him a piece of candy, the wrapper of which he kept as a memento in his wallet.
In middle school, Misaki attended school alongside Takezawa. During this time, her father abandoned their family under the pretense of searching for a friend while secretly escaping his debts, which placed a heavy financial burden on her mother. This experience contributed to Misaki’s strong resentment towards men, except for those who displayed gentlemanly behavior. However, it was later revealed that Minako had misrepresented her husband’s character, omitting details to protect her daughters.
After completing middle school, Misaki enrolled at Seika High School, a former all-boys institution that had recently become coeducational. Due to its low tuition fees, it was one of the few schools her family could afford. At the time, Seika had a poor reputation, with an overwhelming 80% male to 20% female student ratio. The female students often felt intimidated by their unruly male peers, prompting Misaki to excel academically and athletically in order to earn the teachers’ trust. Her efforts led to her election as Student Council President, making her the first female to hold the position. Despite initially being disliked by many male students for her strict disciplinary methods earning her the nickname “Demon President”, her fairness and willingness to help those in need eventually gained her widespread respect. She later won re-election for a second term as president.
At the same time that she entered high school, Misaki secretly took up a part-time job at Maid Latte, a maid café, to support her struggling family. She initially attempted physically demanding jobs but found them too strenuous. She was later hired by Satsuki Hyōdō, the manager of Maid Latte, and reluctantly began working there as a maid.
Her secret job was eventually discovered by Takumi Usui, the Idiot Trio (Naoya Shirakawa, Ikuto Sarashina, and Ryuunosuke Kurosaki), and later Hinata Shintani, making them the only Seika High students aware of her part-time employment.
Appearance
Misaki Usui is a young woman of average height and build with a striking yet understated beauty. She has light brownish-amber eyes with a golden tint and shoulder-length black hair, which she often ties into a ponytail when exercising. Despite her tough demeanor, she is considered quite attractive.
She is most commonly seen wearing her Seika High School uniform or her Maid Latte uniform, accompanied by two silver bobby pins on the left side of her face that keep her bangs out of her eyes. Misaki rarely wears makeup and prefers casual, comfortable clothing outside of school or work, typically opting for jeans and T-shirts. After her shifts at Maid Latte, she is frequently seen wearing a white long-sleeved hoodie and dark blue jeans.
During her middle school years, Misaki had short, chin-length hair, which she later grew out upon entering high school.
In the later timeline, ten years after high school, Misaki becomes a diplomat and lawyer. She adopts a more refined appearance, cutting her hair into a stylish bob and incorporating light makeup into her routine. However, she still retains her characteristic serious expression, often seen frowning even in her professional life.
Personality
Before her father abandoned the family, Misaki Ayuzawa was a gentle, encouraging, and helpful girl. However, after being left to deal with the hardships of debt alongside her mother and sister, she developed a deep-seated distrust toward men, viewing them as dirty, unreliable, and inconsiderate.
Due to her family’s financial struggles, Misaki enrolled at Seika High School, a recently coeducational institution with a predominantly male student body. Determined to protect the female students from the unruly boys, she worked tirelessly to earn the trust of the teachers, training both academically and physically. Her efforts eventually led to her election as Seika’s first female Student Council President. To maintain order, she adopted a strict, no-nonsense approach, often coming down harshly on the male students, which earned her the nickname “Demon Prez” due to her unyielding discipline.
Despite her intimidating leadership style, Misaki is deeply hardworking and selfless, often prioritizing others’ well-being over her own. She cannot stand idly by when someone is in danger, regardless of their gender. She also has a strong sense of justice, particularly when it comes to encouraging genuine effort and perseverance. While she initially shows favoritism towards the female students, over time, she becomes more balanced in her treatment of both genders. Her determination and strong work ethic inspire those around her, and Takumi Usui describes her as being “white”, signifying her unwavering dedication to her principles.
At Maid Latte, Misaki takes on a completely different persona, acting dainty, sweet, and polite to fit the role of a maid café employee. She generally maintains this façade well, but Takumi frequently teases her, causing her to break character and reveal her true temperamental nature. Her reactions to his teasing often border on tsundere behavior, as she fluctuates between embarrassment, frustration, and reluctant fondness.
When it comes to Takumi, Misaki is notably dense about her own feelings. Despite his obvious affection for her, she refuses to acknowledge her emotions for a long time, dismissing his advances and becoming easily flustered by his flirtatious behavior. She often reacts to his presence with awkwardness or physical aggression, and she mockingly refers to him as a “perverted outer-space alien” due to his persistence in following her around. It is only toward the end of the series that she fully realizes and accepts her love for him.
Relationships
Takumi Usui
Initially, Misaki Ayuzawa struggles to acknowledge her feelings for Takumi Usui, keeping her attraction to him hidden from both herself and those around her. She often bickers with him, calls him names, and tries to maintain a distant, combative relationship to protect her reputation as Student Council President. She fears that if the male students at Seika High discover their closeness, she will lose authority over them.
In the final episode of the anime (corresponding to Chapter 32 in the manga), Misaki and Takumi participate in a love trial event at the Yumesaki High School Festival, where they successfully overcome various challenges together. Afterward, dressed as Romeo and Juliet, they watch the fireworks and confess their love for each other, sharing their first kiss.
Though the anime ends here, the manga continues until Chapter 87. Misaki and Takumi’s relationship deepens throughout the story. On Misaki’s birthday, they share a memorable day filled with fun and playful teasing. In Chapter 57, on Christmas, Misaki finally confesses her feelings properly, and the two officially begin dating.
Sakuya Ayuzawa
Sakuya Ayuzawa is Misaki and Suzuna’s absentee father, and his abandonment is the root of Misaki’s deep-seated resentment towards men. He left his family with a massive debt, forcing Misaki and her mother to work tirelessly to make ends meet.
Later in the story, Misaki and Suzuna encounter a chef at Maid Latte, whose triangular rice balls remind Suzuna of their father’s cooking. Following her instincts, Suzuna insists on meeting the chef, leading to the revelation that Sakuya had been working there all along.
It is revealed that Sakuya did not abandon them out of irresponsibility, but rather shouldered a friend’s debt, which kept him away for years. Minako Ayuzawa, aware of the truth, kept it hidden from her daughters to protect them from unnecessary worry. However, Misaki and Suzuna ultimately refuse to accept his return, believing that he had been absent for far too long to make amends.
Minako Ayuzawa
Minako Ayuzawa is Misaki and Suzuna’s mother, a kind yet hardworking woman who struggles with poor health while managing the household. After her husband abandoned them, she took on the burden of repaying his debts, with Misaki stepping up to help her.
Minako deeply cares about Misaki’s well-being, often worrying that her daughter prioritizes work and academics over her personal happiness. She expresses this concern to Takumi, fearing that Misaki is missing out on experiences like falling in love and spending time with friends, things she believes a normal high school student should enjoy.
Suzuna Ayuzawa
Suzuna Ayuzawa is Misaki’s younger sister, known for her eccentric, apathetic demeanor and passive personality. Unlike Misaki, Suzuna rarely displays emotion and maintains a calm, indifferent attitude toward most situations.
As she is still in middle school, Suzuna cannot take on a part-time job to contribute financially. Instead, she enters magazine contests, leveraging her incredible luck to win various prizes, mostly food-related items. Additionally, she keeps track of store sales, ensuring the family can purchase necessities at lower prices.
Suzuna adores her older sister, frequently calling her “Onee-chan”, and their relationship remains strong. The two bear a striking resemblance, though Suzuna has shorter hair, which she typically styles into pigtails.
