Mirai Onozawa (小野沢 未来, Onozawa Mirai), is the main protagonist of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and the older sister of Yuuki Onozawa. A 12-year-old seventh grader, Mirai finds herself thrust into an overwhelming disaster when a massive earthquake strikes Tokyo, forcing her to navigate the aftermath with her younger brother. Throughout the series, she undergoes significant character growth, learning the true meaning of family, responsibility, and resilience as she struggles to find her way back home.
As a character, Mirai’s name means “future” in Japanese, which symbolically reflects her journey of self-discovery and growth amidst tragedy. Initially moody and distant, she gradually evolves into a mature and determined individual, proving her inner strength in the face of overwhelming challenges.
Background

Appearance in anime
Mirai grew up in a typical middle-class family in Tokyo, living with her parents and younger brother, Yuuki Onozawa. As a preteen, she often feels frustrated with her home life, particularly toward her parents, who seem too busy to give her attention. She struggles with typical adolescent emotions, frequently expressing annoyance toward Yuuki, despite deep down caring for him greatly.
On the day of the earthquake, Mirai is reluctantly accompanying Yuuki to a robot exhibition at Odaiba, fulfilling a request from her mother. However, before she can return home, the 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastates Tokyo, leaving her stranded far from her family. Forced to survive and find a way home, Mirai embarks on a harrowing journey across the ruined city, gradually learning to embrace responsibility and courage as she protects her younger brother.
Appearance
Mirai is a petite, average-built 12-year-old girl with short black hair and dark brown eyes. Her typical school uniform consists of a white blouse and a blue skirt, reflecting her ordinary life before the disaster. During her journey after the earthquake, her clothes become progressively dirtier and more worn, symbolizing her struggles and hardships as she fights to survive.
Unlike her cheerful and bright younger brother, Mirai’s expressions often show frustration or discontent, particularly in the beginning. However, as the story progresses, her determination and emotional growth become evident, reflected in her increasingly serious and mature expressions.
Personality
Mirai is initially moody, impatient, and emotionally distant, often feeling burdened by her family responsibilities. She frequently complains about her parents being absent and resents being forced to look after Yuuki, whom she sees as an annoyance. At the start of the series, she displays a pessimistic and irritable attitude, showing little interest in family bonding or personal connections.
Despite her resentment and frustration, Mirai undergoes significant character growth as she is forced to take on a leadership role after the earthquake. She gradually develops a deep sense of responsibility and protectiveness toward Yuuki, realizing that her role as an older sister is not a burden but a privilege. Her once short-tempered nature softens, and she learns to be patient, selfless, and emotionally strong, proving her resilience and inner strength in the face of disaster.
Role in the Story
-
The Reluctant Older Sister
At the start of the series, Mirai is disinterested in her family, viewing her role as an older sister as an inconvenience. She begrudgingly takes Yuuki to the robot exhibition, unaware that this simple act of responsibility will soon become the most important mission of her life. -
Surviving the Earthquake
When the earthquake devastates Tokyo, Mirai is forced into a situation she never imagined—protecting Yuuki and finding a way home. As they traverse the ruined city, they meet Mari Kusakabe, a kind woman who helps guide them back to their families. Along the way, Mirai witnesses tragedy, destruction, and the fragility of human life, all of which shape her into a stronger and more compassionate person. -
Facing Loss & Finding Strength
Throughout the series, Mirai faces moments of fear, doubt, and sorrow, particularly as she comes to terms with the fragility of life. However, instead of succumbing to despair, she finds strength in love and memory, learning to appreciate the moments she once took for granted. -
Confronting Internal & External Threats
As King, Kazuya faces opposition from nobles, foreign powers, and rival factions, all of whom challenge his rule. He uses intelligence, military strategy, and diplomacy to counter political schemes, suppress rebellions, and expand Elfrieden’s influence. His ability to outmaneuver enemies through calculated decisions cements his reputation as a brilliant but sometimes ruthless ruler.
Relationships
Yuuki Onozawa (Younger Brother & Source of Strength)
Mirai’s relationship with Yuuki starts off strained, as she views him as an annoying burden. However, through the hardships they endure together, she realizes that Yuuki is her greatest source of strength. His kindness, optimism, and unwavering belief in her allow her to mature emotionally, transforming her into a protective and loving older sister.
Mari Kusakabe (Motherly Figure & Guide)
Mari serves as a guiding figure for Mirai, offering both physical and emotional support during their journey. Her compassion and maturity help Mirai learn what it truly means to take care of others, and she acts as a substitute maternal figure in the midst of their struggles.
Her Parents (From Resentment to Appreciation)
Before the earthquake, Mirai resents her parents, believing that they neglect her and Yuuki. However, as she experiences the devastation around her, she comes to understand the importance of family, realizing that her parents do love her deeply, even if they don’t always express it in ways she expected.
