Minatsuki Takami (鷹見 水名月, Takami Minatsuki), also known as Hummingbird, is a Deadman and the younger sister of Yō Takami. She was previously held in G Ward of Deadman Wonderland, where she participated in Carnival Corpse battles using her Branch of Sin, Whip Wing. Despite her initially deceptive and timid demeanor, Minatsuki harbors a sadistic and manipulative personality, making her one of the more unpredictable Deadmen within the facility. Her complex relationship with Yō and her past trauma play a significant role in shaping her character throughout the series.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Before the events of Deadman Wonderland, Minatsuki Takami was an ordinary girl living with her family. However, during the Great Tokyo Earthquake, she was trapped inside a greenhouse as the disaster struck. In a moment of betrayal that would define her future, her mother arrived at the scene but, instead of saving Minatsuki, she selfishly grabbed one of the plants and fled. Moments later, the entrance to the greenhouse collapsed, killing her mother and leaving Minatsuki to suffer alone. This traumatic experience profoundly warped Minatsuki’s personality, leading her to develop a sadistic nature and a habit of compulsive lying. It was also during this time that she awakened her Branch of Sin, Whip Wing.
Following the disaster, Minatsuki lived with her father and older brother, Yō Takami. However, her psychological trauma caused her to develop a manipulative and deceitful personality. She frequently tricked Yō into believing that their father was physically abusing her, leading him to lash out violently against their father in retaliation. Exploiting her brother’s protective nature, she continued to manipulate him to suit her own interests.
One day, Minatsuki escalated her deception by faking a sexual assault, prompting Yō to attack their father once again. However, for reasons unknown, she suddenly used her Branch of Sin to kill her father, marking the first time she openly displayed her deadly abilities. Unaware of her powers, Yō mistakenly assumed he was responsible for their father’s death and bore the guilt himself. Shortly after, Minatsuki was arrested and sent to Deadman Wonderland, where she was imprisoned in G Ward due to her status as a Deadman.
Appearance
Minatsuki Takami is a 17-year-old girl with brown hair and brown eyes. Initially, she wears her hair in two braided ponytails over her shoulders, though it was later cut off as part of a Penalty Game in Deadman Wonderland. She also has a tongue piercing, which adds to her rebellious and unpredictable image.
After her release from Deadman Wonderland, Minatsuki grew her hair out and now keeps it in a small braid. She typically wears a yellow dress that reaches down to her knees, giving her a more modest and subdued appearance compared to her time in the prison.
During her Carnival Corpse battles, Minatsuki had a distinct outfit consisting of a light pink pantsuit layered beneath a long purple dress. She also wore white, fingerless gloves and handcuffs connected by a chain, though at times, the chain appeared to be severed. During her battle with Ganta Igarashi, she even used the handcuffs as a defensive tool to block his attacks, demonstrating her resourcefulness in combat.
Personality
Upon first meeting Ganta Igarashi, Minatsuki appears to be a shy, gentle, and kind-hearted girl, seemingly out of place in the brutal environment of Deadman Wonderland. She reinforces this impression with her love for flowers and a reserved demeanor, giving off the illusion of innocence. However, this persona is nothing more than a carefully constructed facade, designed to deceive those around her into lowering their guard. In reality, Minatsuki possesses a sadistic and psychopathic nature, deriving pleasure bordering on sexual arousal from witnessing the suffering of others.
Despite her deeply twisted personality, certain aspects of her kindness are not entirely an act. As the series progresses, it becomes evident that while she prefers to keep her softer side hidden, remnants of genuine care and vulnerability remain within her. Her ability to convincingly switch between personas also highlights her gift for manipulation and deception, as she successfully tricks Ganta into believing she is innocent during their first encounter and even manages to seamlessly return to her false personality when her brother, Yō Takami, interrupts her Carnival Corpse battle.
Minatsuki’s traumatic past plays a significant role in shaping her cynical worldview. Her primroses, which decorate her room, symbolize the day of her mother’s betrayal, as she chose to save her flowers instead of rescuing Minatsuki during the Great Tokyo Earthquake. This moment instilled deep-seated resentment in her, making lying and manipulation second nature to her. Furthermore, the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father reinforced her misanthropic tendencies, particularly misandry, as she harbors an inherent distrust of men, believing they are only interested in her for sexual reasons and just as deceitful as she is.
After losing to Ganta in their Carnival Corpse battle, Minatsuki undergoes a shift in personality, forming a fragile but developing bond with her brother, Yō. Realizing that he genuinely cares for her, she gradually calms down and becomes less outwardly hostile. However, her cruel tendencies do not entirely disappear, and she remains prone to lashing out when provoked. During her Punishment Game, Minatsuki experiences a moment of genuine fear, dreading the loss of another part of her body. This fear confuses her, as she angrily acknowledges that it is unlike her to react in such a vulnerable manner.
Additionally, Minatsuki shows an unexpected sense of embarrassment and irritation when caught in moments of undress. For instance, when Ganta accidentally walks in on her while she is partially exposed, she almost attacks him out of frustration, revealing that despite her usual confidence and control over situations, she has moments of insecurity and discomfort.
Abilities
Branch of Sin
As a Deadman, Minatsuki Takami possesses a Branch of Sin, which grants her the ability to manipulate her blood outside of her body as a weapon. To forcibly draw out her blood for use in combat, she removes one of her earrings, allowing her to activate her abilities efficiently in battle.
Branch of Sin: Whip Wing (ウイツプ・ウイング, Uippu Uingu)
Minatsuki’s Branch of Sin, Whip Wing, manifests as long, whip-like strands of blood that extend from her hair. These whips are highly flexible and can be used both offensively and defensively, allowing her to deliver immensely fast strikes or restrain opponents with precision. Due to their speed and fluidity, Whip Wing is an unpredictable and difficult ability to counter.
In the anime adaptation, Minatsuki claims that her whips can “surpass the speed of light,” though this is likely an exaggeration. A more accurate interpretation suggests that her Branch of Sin operates at supersonic speeds, enabling her to strike with extreme swiftness before her opponents can react.
Whip Wing: Peacock Peak’s Union
Minatsuki can combine her Whip Wing ability with Chaplin Sukegawa’s Branch of Sin to execute a joint attack known as Peacock Peak’s Union. In this technique, Minatsuki’s blood whips grow in size and strength, gaining the enhanced properties of Chaplin’s abilities. This fusion attack is devastatingly powerful and was strong enough to defeat Uzume Sumeragi in a single strike.
