Mikoto Mikoshiba (御子柴 実琴, Mikoshiba Mikoto), often referred to by his nickname Mikorin (みこりん), is a central character and the deuteragonist of the anime and manga series Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun). He is a high school student at Roman Academy, the best friend and classmate of Yuu Kashima, and one of Umetarou Nozaki’s trusted manga assistants. Despite his flirtatious and flashy exterior, Mikorin is revealed to be shy, awkward, and incredibly self-conscious especially around girls.
Mikorin is primarily responsible for applying screen tones and effects in Nozaki’s manga and also unknowingly serves as the real-life inspiration for the manga’s female protagonist, a fact that causes him deep embarrassment when he learns of it. His character is a beloved blend of contradiction outwardly confident but inwardly flustered making him one of the most relatable and endearing figures in the series.
Background

Appearance in anime
Mikorin is a student at Roman Academy, attending the same year as Nozaki and Kashima. He has been friends with Nozaki for some time and occasionally visits his home to help with manga production. Despite his flashy behavior, Mikorin is not very popular with girls mainly because his charm vanishes the moment someone takes him seriously. He tends to say flirtatious lines instinctively, only to immediately panic and hide afterward.
When Nozaki observes Mikorin’s complex personality, he uses him as the template for Mamiko, the heroine of his manga Let’s Fall in Love. Mikorin is unaware of this at first but becomes horrified when he finds out. Still, he continues to help with the manga and becomes an essential part of the chaotic cast surrounding Nozaki’s creative world.
Appearance
Mikorin is a slim but athletic teenage boy with short, spiky red hair and crimson eyes, often described as attractive by his peers. He wears the Roman Academy male uniform a white shirt, gray blazer, dark pants, and a loosened red tie. He’s typically seen with a confident pose, though his expressions quickly shift to shy or panicked when flustered.
His overall aesthetic gives off a “ladies’ man” vibe, which contrasts hilariously with his actual lack of composure in real romantic situations. His body language is often exaggerated, especially when he’s trying (and failing) to act cool.
Personality
Mikorin is a walking contradiction: he acts like a flirt, throwing out bold lines to girls, but immediately becomes nervous and self-critical afterward. In truth, he’s incredibly sensitive, introverted, and emotionally vulnerable. He spends hours overthinking minor social interactions, and despite being surrounded by people who admire his looks and energy, he struggles with self-confidence.
He enjoys video games and figurines, particularly those featuring cute female characters, which further cements his tsundere-like personality a cool surface hiding a soft, geeky interior. Mikorin is also deeply caring, often offering genuine compliments and emotional support to his friends, even if he tries to play it off afterward.
Role in the Story
-
The Flirt Who Can’t Handle Flirting
Mikorin frequently attempts to charm girls with cheesy lines, only to blush and retreat in embarrassment when they respond. These moments are a consistent source of comedy, with his over-the-top bravado being immediately undercut by his shy reactions. -
Assistant to Nozaki
Mikorin helps Nozaki with screen tones and character design, and he is also unknowingly the model for Nozaki’s manga heroine, Mamiko. His tsundere behavior, emotional vulnerability, and sudden shifts between bravado and awkwardness provide perfect inspiration for the emotional beats of a shōjo manga character. -
Unexpected Depth
Though comic relief is his primary role, Mikorin occasionally shows moments of genuine insight and maturity. Whether he’s consoling friends, recognizing his flaws, or working hard on a shared task, Mikorin proves that he’s more than just a pretty face with a catchphrase. His duality as both a joke character and someone with emotional depth adds richness to the series.
Relationships
Umetarou Nozaki
His friend and manga boss. Mikorin respects Nozaki’s talent and often seeks his advice even if Nozaki remains oblivious to subtle emotional cues. Their interactions are often comedic, especially when Nozaki treats Mikorin’s dramatic outbursts as writing material.
Yuu Kashima
Mikorin’s best friend and classmate. While Kashima is suave and adored by girls, Mikorin often reacts with exasperation to her antics. Despite their constant bickering and differences, they have a strong, sibling-like friendship.
Chiyo Sakura
Chiyo often teases Mikorin but is also one of the few who genuinely understands his shy nature. Their interactions are lighthearted, with Chiyo offering encouragement and Mikorin frequently getting flustered.
Masayuki Hori
Though they don’t interact as much, Mikorin and Hori occasionally share scenes, especially when discussing Kashima. Mikorin respects Hori but often finds himself dragged into the latter’s frustrations with Kashima.
