She is a second-year student at Hyakkaou Private Academy, a former member of the Student Council, and the president of the Beautification Council. Known for her wild and reckless nature, Midari stands out in the story for her obsession with risk and danger, especially in gambling situations where she actively seeks life-threatening stakes.

Midari’s full appearance.

Midari Ikishima is a pale-skinned girl with short black hair, which is purple in the manga. Her hair is styled in a concave cut, and she has unusually tiny pupils. In the anime, close-up shots reveal her eye color to be yellow-green, though in the manga, her eyes are purple.

Midari’s version of the Hyakkaou Private Academy uniform is distinctive. She wears a sweater vest in the same red and black color scheme as the school’s standard blazer, along with a white button-up dress shirt, which she rolls up to her elbows. She also dons a dark pleated skirt, purple underwear with a floral pattern, and black socks. For footwear, she wears the academy’s brown loafers with black soles.

Adding to her bold appearance, Midari sports purple lipstick and matching purple-painted fingernails. She does not wear the academy’s traditional black tie but accessorizes with unique items like a purple hairband adorned with a heart-patterned bow and purple wrist cuffs with stripes. Her left eye is always covered by a white medical eyepatch. Additionally, she is adorned with several piercings: two under her mouth on the left side, one on each ear, and a tongue piercing. Her forearms are often seen wrapped in bandages, hinting at her penchant for self-harm.

Personality

Midari’s masochism.

Midari Ikishima is a highly masochistic and suicidal individual, a trait made evident when she gouges out her own eye with an ink pen as part of a debt repayment to Kirari Momobami. Her personality is intense and overbearing, often intimidating other students with her bizarre behavior. She revels in high-risk, sadistic games, such as her life-or-death gamble with Yumeko Jabami, and thrives on impulsiveness and a lack of self-restraint, caring little about long-term consequences. Midari is constantly seeking immediate satisfaction, often through games where someone’s life is at stake, and grows disappointed when the danger lessens.

Her desperation to engage in dangerous gambling drives her to create games that others avoid. In one instance, Midari plays a finger-risking game with Erimi Mushibami, only to lose interest when the danger subsides. Midari’s self-centeredness and lack of concern for others’ well-being make her brutally honest and uncaring. She gambles recklessly, placing large sums of money on the line without considering the potential debt, instead seeking physical harm as her thrill.

Despite her sadistic and narrow-minded tendencies, Midari is highly intelligent, as demonstrated by her numerous academic achievements during her middle and elementary school years. She is cunning in her gambling strategies, manipulating situations to her advantage. However, she dismisses the idea that academic success makes someone a “genius,” as seen in her criticism of Sayaka Igarashi. As the president of the Beautification Council, Midari enjoys the freedom it grants her to organize dangerous gambles, though she often skips council meetings, as noted by Ayame Nureba.

Midari’s masochistic desires lead her to develop an intense infatuation with Yumeko Jabami after a failed plan to get herself killed. She admires Yumeko’s unpredictable gambling style, referring to her as a “goddess” and keeping photos of her on her phone. Yumeko’s attention excites her, but her attempts to gain her favor are mostly ignored, leaving Midari feeling depressed. Although she enjoys pain, Midari does not want to be hated by Yumeko and feels jealous of Ryota Suzui for his proximity to her. She sees Ryota’s relationship with Yumeko as one of control, similar to a master-slave dynamic, but still acknowledges him as one of Yumeko’s friends. In the anime, Midari even seeks Ryota’s advice about Yumeko, despite her jealousy.

Drama

Midari in live action.

In the live-action adaptation of Kakegurui, Midari Ikishima is portrayed by Miki Yanagi. Unlike her anime and manga counterparts, her hair is brown, and she does not have a tongue piercing. There are several minor differences in her portrayal compared to the source material.

In the drama, Midari spends much of her time confined to a cell inside the Student Council room, although the cell doesn’t appear to be locked. She is first introduced alongside Sayaka Igarashi and Kaede Manyuda after Yumeko Jabami loses a gamble against Yuriko Nishinotouin. Midari expresses her desire to challenge Yumeko, but when Sayaka refuses, Midari responds by pointing a gun at her own head. Despite Sayaka’s clear concern, Midari pulls the trigger, laughing maniacally when no bullet is fired.

Kirari is notably absent during Season One, with her significant scenes being filled by Ririka Momobami and Kaede Manyuda. For example, it is Kaede who invites Mary Saotome to join One notable difference from the anime is that Midari does not rescue Yumeko from Jun Kiwatari and his friends; this role is taken by Ryota Suzui. Instead, Midari becomes interested in Yumeko after hearing about her massive debt. Midari’s obsession with Yumeko becomes apparent when Kaede Manyuda deduces that Yumeko intends to challenge Kirari Momobami. Midari reacts violently, throwing Kaede to the ground and shouting that the president belongs to her, before breaking into uncontrollable giggles and praising Yumeko.Student Council. Throughout Season One, Kirari is occasionally shown in shadowy glimpses, but her face remains hidden. It isn’t until Season Two that Kirari becomes a more prominent character. In this iteration, she is portrayed as colder than in the manga, exhibiting a demeanor that rarely breaks into a smile.

Unlike in the manga and anime, where Midari personally arrests Yumeko and Ryota, she sends her subordinates to capture them in the drama. While waiting in the Beautification Council room, she loads her gun and begins touching herself while thinking about Yumeko, calling her a “big pervert.” She presses the trigger, but the gun doesn’t fire. When Yumeko arrives, Midari excitedly greets her.

In the second season of the drama, it is revealed that Midari was interviewed by Kyuu Nitobe.

Relationships

Yumeko Jabami
When Midari Ikishima met Yumeko Jabami, she challenged her to a game, hoping to see how alike they were. After losing the bet, Midari became obsessed with Yumeko, idolizing her to the point of desiring that Yumeko be the one to end her life. However, during the Cutthroat Guillotine game, Midari broke the rules, causing Yumeko to grow even more detached from her, further deepening Midari’s infatuation.

Kirari Momobami
Midari first encountered Kirari Momobami when she needed to settle her debts. Since she couldn’t pay in money, Kirari offered her an alternative—removing one of her eyes. Without hesitation, Midari gouged out her own eye, impressing Kirari, who saw potential in her. This act ultimately led to Midari being invited to join the Student Council.

Etymology

The name Midari (妄) can be interpreted as “delusion,” “reckless,” “chaotic,” or “unnecessarily without authority.”

Midari’s surname, Ikishima (生志摩), is composed of several kanji: “living” (生) (iki), “aspire” or “intention” (志) (shi), and “wear” (摩) (ma). Interestingly, it also derives from Iki Shini (生き死に), which means “life or death.” This interpretation was confirmed by the series’ author, Homura Kawamoto, in the official fanbook Kakegurui Love. Additionally, Ikishima can be understood as “loss of the will to live,” as it incorporates the kanji for “life,” “will,” and “scrape,” suggesting a symbolic loss of vitality.
