Meiko Otsuka

Meiko Otsuka (大塚 芽子, Ōtsuka Meiko), is a minor supporting character in the anime and manga series Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches). She was one of the second generation of witches, possessing the power of Telepathy, and served as the president of the Manga Club at Suzaku High School. As one of the witches assigned under Rika Saionji’s leadership, Meiko’s role in the series revolves around the renewed witch system following the erasure of the original witches’ powers.

Though not a major player in the central narrative, Meiko’s character adds color and depth to the school’s supernatural backdrop. After the first ceremony, which erased the powers of the original seven witches, Meiko’s telepathic ability was also nullified, returning her to ordinary student life.

Background

Appearance in anime

Meiko Otsuka is a student at Suzaku High School, introduced during the arc involving the second set of witches under the influence of the new student council president, Rika Saionji. Chosen for her compatibility with the supernatural, Meiko was granted the ability of telepathy, allowing her to hear the thoughts of others after kissing them.

While she kept her distance from the main cast, Meiko was known on campus as the head of the Manga Club, a small but passionate student group. Her love for manga and storytelling gave her a creative flair, which contrasted with the mental burden of her telepathic power. After the first ceremony to remove the new witch powers, she lost her ability and resumed her normal school life.

Appearance

Meiko has a modest and laid-back appearance, often seen with slightly messy shoulder-length dark brown hair and wearing glasses. She typically dresses in the standard school uniform, with a few manga-themed accessories like pins or charms on her bag that hint at her artistic personality.

Her expressions are usually relaxed or distracted, reflecting her tendency to get lost in her own thoughts or manga fantasies.

Personality

Meiko is an introverted and imaginative student who prefers the quiet company of manga over the hustle and bustle of social life. As the president of the Manga Club, she’s known for being quirky, thoughtful, and occasionally spaced out traits that make her somewhat of an oddball among her classmates.

Her telepathic ability created a dilemma for her, as hearing others’ thoughts left her feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. Despite this, she maintained a generally positive demeanor and contributed to the group’s efforts when needed.

Role in the Story

  • Introduction as a Witch
Meiko is introduced during the second witch arc, where Rika Saionji forms a new set of witches. Meiko is granted telepathy, allowing her to hear the thoughts of those she kisses. Though she is reluctant to use the power often, it gives her insight into the emotional states of others.

  • Manga Club Activities
While not a central character, Meiko is seen organizing activities for the Manga Club and briefly interacts with the main cast during their investigations. Her role provides comedic relief and a different perspective on how the witch powers affect students outside the main circle.

  • Loss of Power
During the first ceremony led by Yamada, which aims to erase the powers of the new witches, Meiko loses her telepathy. She accepts this without resistance, seemingly relieved to return to a normal life where she can focus on her passions without the mental burden of others’ thoughts.

Relationships

Rika Saionji
As a member of Rika’s new witch group, Meiko respects Rika’s authority but maintains a neutral stance in the larger conflicts. She does not show strong loyalty to Rika’s ideals, instead choosing to observe quietly.

Supernatural Studies Club
Though she is not officially part of the club, Meiko interacts briefly with Yamada and the others during the investigation into the new witches. She provides assistance when necessary but prefers to keep a low profile.

Manga Club Members
Her closest social circle consists of fellow manga enthusiasts. Though unnamed, they represent Meiko’s true comfort zone and support her creativity.

Trivia

    • Meiko’s power, telepathy, is activated by a kiss, like all other witch abilities, and symbolizes the fear of truly knowing others’ thoughts.
      • She is often seen reading or sketching manga, even during important moments.
      • Her character design includes subtle nods to classic shoujo manga artists, such as her large glasses and ribboned hairstyle.
      • After losing her power, Meiko expresses relief, implying that the ability caused her more stress than she let on.
      • She is one of the few witches who never expresses strong opinions about their abilities, reflecting her quiet and accepting nature.

    Legacy

      • Though Meiko Otsuka has a minor role in Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo, her character adds depth to the second witch arc and highlights the emotional toll of supernatural powers. Her telepathy, while powerful, serves as a metaphor for the anxiety that comes with being too aware of others’ opinions a theme that resonates with introverted and sensitive viewers.
        • Her presence in the story reinforces the idea that not all witches seek power or control, and some simply want to return to a normal, peaceful life. As a manga lover and quiet observer, Meiko represents the subtle voices in the background those who notice everything, feel deeply, and quietly support from the sidelines.
