Matsuri Mizusawa (水沢 まつり, Mizusawa Matsuri) is a supporting character in the anime and manga series Citrus. She is the older sister of Inori Mizusawa and a former junior high school student who first appears as an antagonist, causing conflict between Yuzu Aihara and Mei Aihara. Manipulative and cunning in her early appearances, Matsuri uses deception and emotional manipulation to get what she wants, particularly when it comes to Yuzu, with whom she has a long-standing friendship.
Despite her antagonistic introduction, Matsuri gradually transitions into a supporting role, becoming more integrated into the main cast as the series progresses. Her interactions with Yuzu, Mei, and the others reveal a more complex character, shaped by emotional insecurities and a deep fear of being left behind.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Matsuri Mizusawa is a precocious and intelligent girl for her age, often acting more mature or at times more cunning than her peers. She is known for her mischievous and teasing nature, frequently poking fun at others, especially Yuzu Aihara and Harumi Taniguchi, both of whom are common targets of her playful antics. Beneath her playful exterior, however, Matsuri has a manipulative streak, using her sharp wit and emotional intelligence to manipulate situations and people to her advantage.
She often shows little regard for social boundaries or shame, exemplified when she used a group of younger boys to take an incriminating photo of Mei, all for the purpose of blackmailing her and sabotaging Yuzu’s relationship. These actions highlight her early role in the series as an antagonist, driven more by possessiveness and emotional insecurity than malice.
It is later revealed that Matsuri’s behavior stems from a deep sense of loneliness and abandonment. Having long viewed Yuzu as a surrogate older sister, the thought of losing her to someone else especially Mei triggered her worst behavior. Her attempts to sabotage Mei and Yuzu’s relationship were, at their core, fueled by fear of being left behind.
Despite her manipulative tendencies, Matsuri has shown moments of genuine care and kindness, though she often denies or hides this side of herself when others call her out on it. Over time, as she becomes more integrated into Yuzu’s friend group, she softens, gradually shifting from an antagonist to a complicated but supportive character.
Appearance
Matsuri Mizusawa is a short-statured young girl with shoulder-length light pink hair and bright blue eyes. Her hairstyle and vibrant hair color contribute to her distinct and playful appearance, complementing her bold personality.
Her fashion sense is casual and edgy, often reflecting her rebellious and mischievous nature. She tends to dress in a style reminiscent of a delinquent, favoring relaxed clothing with a bit of attitude. One of her signature accessories is a pair of headphones, which she is frequently seen wearing either around her neck or perched on top of her head. Her style, combined with her confident posture and expressive eyes, helps communicate her clever and slightly defiant character at a glance.
Relationships
Yuzu Aihara
Matsuri and Yuzu have known each other since childhood. Yuzu, having noticed that Matsuri seemed lonely much like herself approached her, and the two quickly became close, forming a sister-like bond. Matsuri grew very clingy and possessive of Yuzu, often insisting on bathing together, invading her house uninvited to sleep over, and demanding to be included whenever Yuzu spent time with other friends.
When Matsuri discovered Yuzu’s feelings for Mei Aihara, she became deeply jealous and attempted to drive a wedge between them. Her actions included manipulation and blackmail, as she feared losing her “older sister” to Mei. However, after realizing the depth of Yuzu and Mei’s feelings for one another and the pain she was causing Matsuri admitted her faults. She came to understand that her actions were rooted in fear of abandonment, and eventually chose to support Yuzu’s relationship with Mei. Though she continues to tease Yuzu regularly, it is now in a more playful, friendly manner that reflects their restored bond.
Mei Aihara
Initially, Matsuri was jealous of Mei, seeing her as the person who was stealing Yuzu’s attention and affection. To assert her claim over Yuzu, Matsuri kissed her in front of Mei and tried to undermine Mei’s character by manipulating her into a compromising situation and threatening to expose it. Despite her efforts, she failed to win Yuzu back and ultimately acknowledged her defeat.
In an unexpected turn, Mei recognized a similarity between herself and Matsuri, noting that both of them struggle with expressing emotions in a healthy way. This led to a gradual shift in their dynamic. Matsuri began to respect Mei, eventually viewing her as an older sister figure. Their relationship improved significantly Mei began tutoring Matsuri, and Matsuri returned the favor by helping Mei at events like the school festival and supporting her during a summer trip meant to bring her closer to Yuzu.
Though Matsuri was initially hurt and confused upon learning about Mei’s arranged marriage, fearing Mei was toying with Yuzu’s emotions, the situation was eventually resolved. Since then, Matsuri has continued to support their relationship and has even offered Mei advice on what to get Yuzu for her birthday, further cementing their mutual respect and friendship.
Harumi Taniguchi
At first, Harumi was wary of Matsuri, warning Yuzu to be cautious around her. Matsuri found amusement in teasing Harumi just as she did with Yuzu and Mei especially because Harumi kept her distance and observed from afar. Matsuri noted that Harumi seemed like the type to avoid conflict out of fear of getting hurt but added that she doesn’t dislike “smart girls” like her.
Over time, their relationship softened, and Harumi gradually came to trust Matsuri more. They are often seen spending time together in later chapters, suggesting a more comfortable and friendly dynamic has formed between them. Matsuri continues to tease Harumi, often to her discomfort, but their interactions hint at a possible crush Matsuri may have on her, though this is left ambiguous.
Etymology
The name Matsuri (まつり) is written in hiragana, which gives it no fixed meaning. However, when written in kanji, Matsuri can have several possible interpretations depending on the characters used:
Her surname Mizusawa (水沢) is written with the kanji 水 (mizu), meaning “water,” and 沢 (sawa), meaning “marsh” or “swamp.” Together, Mizusawa can be interpreted as “water marsh”, possibly symbolizing emotional depth, hidden complexity, or fluidity—traits that mirror Matsuri’s layered and shifting personality.
