Mamoru Aikawa

Mamoru Aikawa is a key antagonist in High-Rise Invasion. A God Candidate with ambitions that drove him to manipulate others ruthlessly, Mamoru ultimately met his end at the hands of the Administrator during the intense battle between Sniper Mask and Rika Honjo, as punishment for breaking the rules of the organ.

In the anime, Mamoru served as the primary antagonist, orchestrating conflicts and presenting a formidable challenge to the protagonists.

Survival isn’t just about strength. It’s about outsmarting the enemy and knowing when to act.
— Mamoru Aikawa

Appearance

Mamoru has short, curly hair and sharp brown eyes, often accompanied by a stern, calculating expression. His outfit includes a green, fur-lined puff coat with an Arctic feel, paired with regular jeans, giving him a rugged yet distinct look that reflects his intense personality.

Personality

As a young child, Mamoru witnessed his father’s tragic suicide, spurred by a note condemning those who had “betrayed” him in business and social circles. This experience fostered a twisted worldview in Mamoru, leading him to despise those who suffer betrayal, seeing them as a “cancer” to society deserving of death. He preaches this philosophy—“those who earn betrayal earn death”—to Rika Honjo and others, and harbors a deep fear of betrayal himself, taking extreme measures to prevent it. His obsession ultimately drives him to break the rules of the organ, leading to his death at the hands of the Administrator.

As he dies, Mamoru releases Rika from his brainwashing but leaves behind his Apostle abilities. Initially viewed as an act of kindness, the Administrator reveals Mamoru’s true intent: ensuring that even one follower might embrace his doctrine, thus solidifying his legacy. He dies defiant of the organ and resolute in his beliefs.

Mamoru also displays a perverse side, as shown when he buries his face in Yayoi Kusakabe’s chest in Episode 9, adding a darkly humorous edge to his otherwise intense character.

Ability to Evade Angel Attacks
Mamoru has a unique ability to avoid attacks from angels, allowing him to maneuver through dangerous encounters with ease.

Angel Manipulation
Much like his control over masks, Mamoru extends his powerful manipulation skills to multiple angels, especially during the intense battle between Sniper Mask and Rika Honjo.

Knowledge of God’s Code
In collaboration with the Prophet, Mamoru holds extensive knowledge about the high-rise organ and its intricacies. This deep understanding also fuels his wariness of the Railgun User.

Etymology

The name Mamoru (守) translates to “guard,” “protect,” “defend,” or “obey,” reflecting his complex desire for control and loyalty. His surname, Aikawa (相川), combines “相” (ai), meaning “phase,” “aspect,” or “countenance,” with “川” (kawa), meaning “river” or “stream.” Together, his name evokes a sense of steadfast protection yet hints at an underlying fluidity or duality in his nature, as he navigates the turbulent, shifting loyalties within the skyscraper world.

Trivia

    • Mamoru’s name, meaning “protect” or “defend,” is ironically fitting, as his concept of protection often involves ruthless control and manipulation rather than genuine care.
    • He is the only character in High-Rise Invasion with control over as many as thirty angels, showcasing his exceptional status and power as a God Candidate.
    • Mamoru’s intense fear of betrayal likely stems from witnessing his father’s suicide and the circumstances surrounding it, shaping his harsh worldview and leading to his doctrine of “those who earn betrayal earn death.”
    • Despite his cold and calculating personality, Mamoru occasionally shows a more humorous side, as seen when he buries his face in Yayoi Kusakabe’s chest, revealing an unexpected, if perverse, quirk.
    • His deep knowledge of the God’s Code and the inner workings of the high-rise world fuels his fear of powerful opponents like the Railgun User, adding a layer of vulnerability to his otherwise domineering persona.
    • Mamoru’s ability to create Apostles, significantly enhancing their strength and loyalty, is a rare skill that sets him apart from other God Candidates and makes him one of the series’ most formidable antagonists.
